Do you have items that you don’t need JUNETH anymore, but feel are 12 too good to throw out?

New to Me Day New to Me Day is similar to a garage sale, but without the money or hassle. Everything you place at the end of your driveway or at the edge of your lawn is FREE.

On the second Saturday in June, place all usable goods on your curb and mark them with the New to Me Day poster available at barrie.ca so that others know they are available for taking. You can also share the items you have available on the City’s Facebook event page to show others what you’re offering.

Anything that does not find a new home must be taken back in by 9 p.m. that day, as there will be no municipal collection of these items. If you need to get rid of unwanted items after New to Me Day, visit barrie.ca/CurbsideCollection for more information.

Textile collection program The City ran a textile collection pilot program in select Barrie households in 2019 and 2020. The information received from the pilot will be used to evaluate a potential full-scale textile collection program.

All yard waste collected throughout the City is brought to the Barrie landfill where it is processed into compost. It is important that only yard waste materials are placed out for collection in order to produce nutrient rich compost.

If It Doesn’t Grow, It Doesn’t Go! Residents are reminded not to place any glass, plastic or metal items in their yard waste. (for example: pet waste, pet toys, plastic plant pots, plastic soil bags, garden tools and treated wood are not accepted in yard waste). Check out the Sorting Guide at the back of this calendar for a list of acceptable yard waste material or use the sorting tool at barrie.ca/WhereDoesItGo.

Yard waste contaminated with garbage can result in compost that fails to meet certain legislated requirements.

When is yard waste collected? Curbside collection of yard waste occurs during selected months, as indicated below. Refer to the symbols throughout the calendar to determine when yard waste is collected in your area (to determine your area, please refer to the map on page 3).

barrie.ca/CurbsideCollection

Over 10 tonnes of single-use batteries were collected in Barrie during battery collection week in 2019.

Curbside battery collection usually occurs the first full week of November on your regular collection day. Look for your bag in the mail. Please note: the timing and details of this collection are subject to change. Acceptable materials: • Standard A, AA, AAA, C, D and 9-Volt batteries (both alkaline and heavy duty) • Button batteries Unacceptable materials: • Rechargeable batteries such as NiCad, NiMH, or Lithium Ion (cellphones, laptops, etc.) • Car batteries • Industrial batteries and battery packs Unacceptable batteries may be taken to the Household Hazardous Waste Facility for free. Visit barrie.ca/HouseholdHazardousWaste for location and hours of operation. Safe storage Batteries should be stored in a cool, dry location, away from any flammable material, prior to disposal. Do not use the battery bag to store batteries – this can be a fire hazard. During storage, battery terminals should not be in contact with conductive materials. The terminals on 9-Volt batteries, in particular, should be covered with electrical tape prior to storage. Where batteries go after collection All batteries are sorted by type in a processing facility and then recycled to recover their respective components, including metal, Sentry duty carbon, manganese, etc. The zinc and manganese recovered from #PictureBarrie Credit: Michael Sharp the batteries are used as ingredients in a micro-nutrient fertilizer. The battery collection bag is also recycled. OCTOBER DECEMBER
