As screenwriters, our work has the capability to reach millions, if not billions - and sometimes what we do actually shifts public opinion, shapes the decision-making of powerful leaders, perpetuates destructive myths, or unexpectedly enlightens the culture. It isn’t always “just entertainment.” Sometimes it’s history. Leo Szilard was irritated. Reading the newspaper in a London hotel on September 12, 1933, the great Hungarian physicist came across an article about a science conference he had not been invited to. Even more irritating was a section about Lord Ernest Rutherford – who famously fathered the “solar system” model of the atom – and his speech where he self-assuredly pronounced: “Anyone who expects a source of power from the transformation of these atoms is talking moonshine.” Stewing over the upper-class British arrogance, Szilard set o on a walk and set his mind to how Rutherford could be proven wrong – how energy might usefully be extracted from the atom. The current health crisis is likely to cost the economy US $1 trillion during 2020 (UNCTAD), while one estimate shows that five to 25 million jobs will be eradicated, wiping out US $860 billion to US $3.4 trillion in labour income (ILO). The current health crisis has enormous global ramifications for the creative sector. The pandemic has impacted the entire creative value chain – creation, production, distribution and access – and considerably weakened the professional, social and economic status of artists and cultural professionals. Entrepreneurs and small- and medium-sized enterprises, which often lack the necessary resources to respond to an emergency of this magnitude, are especially vulnerable. Freelancers, part-timers and gig workers, who make up a large segment of the sector’s labour force, are left with limited to no access to conventional social protection mechanisms. Lockdown measures around the world also directly impact the sector’s capacity to create and distribute new artistic expressions and cultural content outside of the digital spectrum, reducing the diversity of cultural expressions worldwide. At the same time, they severely limit opportunities for the public to access and enjoy cultural goods and services. For vulnerable groups that already suffer from unequal access to technology, including women and indigenous peoples, the existing “digital gap” further exacerbates their lack of access to culture.

    Dear Music Lover, Welcome to the 23rd year of music at the National Museum of Women in the Arts. We are delighted to have been able to reschedule two of the concerts cancelled last season due to COVID-19 and to have added a third. This season, concerts will begin in the spring of 2021. Our concern for audience and artist safety led us to delay the season with the hope that it will be safer to congregate in person at that time. However we anticipate at this time that the concerts will be virtual. If things do change, we will certainly notify you. Our season kicks off on March 31 with the acclaimed McDermott Trio, featuring Anne-Marie, Kerry, and Maureen McDermott, with master violist Paul Neubauer. The McDermott Trio has been recognized as one of the most exciting trios of their generation and Neubauer has been called "a master musician" by the New York Times due to his exceptional musicality and effortless playing. On May 12, we welcome the talented Stefania Dovhan, who has performed at many opera houses including the Royal Opera House, the New York City Opera, and the Baltimore Lyric Opera. We will close out the season on June 2 with the amazing violinist Jennifer Koh, who is known for her intense, commanding performances delivered with dazzling virtuosity and technical assurance.
