Cinematic Portrayal of Forms of Violence Rooted in the Sri.Pdf
Vistas JOURNAL OF HUMANITIES & SOCIAL SCIENCES Volume 5 (December 2009 Cinematic Portrayal of Forms of Violence Rooted in the Sri Lankan Ethno-Political Crisis: A Thematic Appreciation of Three Films Theodore A. Fernando Abstract The ability of the general public to make informed political decisions about war and peace or on other important topics, is at the very heart of the democratic system of governance. In this context, it is extremely important to explore how well the media tells its story concerning the issues that people have little or no access at all. Further, the socialization and educational role of the mass media in fostering ethnic tolerance calls for inculcating right knowledge, attitudes and behaviour in keeping with civility and harmonious coexistence. Therefore, it follows that the media in a country where there are inter-state wars and ethnic tensions should carry the responsibility of performing greater ethnic tolerance, among the citizens, and call for openness and acceptance towards multiculturalism. More importantly, the watchdog function of the media requires media to warn the citizens about various catastrophes that are either manmade or natural. However, some scholars have argued that in times of war, with conflict escalation and state mobilization against insurgencies, media generally functions according to the wishes. The Disappeared: Fiction and Ethnography in Sri Lanka's Postwar Reconciliation
The Disappeared: Fiction and Ethnography in Sri Lanka's Postwar Reconciliation The Disappeared I. Saint Anthony's Ajith Dissanayake, part-time friend and part-time drummer for much of the previous winter, disappeared the following spring outside the St. Anthony's Church on Inner Flower Road, half-way into the street. In the midday heat, St. Anthony's smelled like salt and spicy sambol in abrading teeth. A thick cross extended cumbersomely off its roof. The cross, hanging exhausted in the sky, obscured the sun during the day, the moon and stars at night. The past half-century had not been kind to the building, only recently recovered from its long state of disuse and disrepair. I often walked at night with friends—the hidden poets of work, or school, from the first floor apartments of faces I can't remember—in search of St. Anthony's. We drifted, always vibrating forward, too drunk to all stay still and quiet. For days, we wandered across Colombo, through postal codes and endless bowls of curd and honey, through cameras, pens and ink on spiral note pads. When we came upon the church we showed our pens and cameras to a pair of old uniforms at the corner. They laughed at us through all the holes where teeth once were. "Aren't you children Buddhist?" Did we say yes? But they always let us through and we recorded our youth against the leaning cross, and the way the stars moved in and out of focus on the building's stained glass, its rotting wooden door, cockroaches twisting, hissing about the pews. -
Provenance in Personal Documentary: My Mother's Village Aaron Burton
Provenance in Personal Documentary: My Mother's Village Aaron Burton A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Media Arts) UNSW Australia Art & Design The University of New South Wales October 2014 Abstract My Mother's Village is a personal documentary response to The Sri Lanka Series (1980), a series of ethnographic films produced by the author's anthropologist mother, Sharon Bell, and filmmaker father, Geoff Burton. Four women, a community of fishermen, and a dance instructor were the 'subjects' of their three films. The feature length film My Mother's Village revisits the same participants in Sri Lanka and pursues the original themes and issues, such as economic conditions, the status of women, colonialism, religion, ritual, and inter-generational change. My Mother's Village explores how both the filmmaker and participants are navigating heredity and inheritance. Supplementing the film, the exegesis component, Provenance in Personal Documentary interrogates the conceptual underpinnings of the creative research. 'Provenance', the key concept informing the production of My Mother's Village is a fine art term specifically ‘repractised’ and retheorised here. It is hypothesised that cross-disciplinary personal documentary production is a fertile environment that responds to increasingly accessible technologies and progressive interpretations of what contemporary ‘documentary’ means. This research project responds to the lack of a critical framework for interpreting and developing inter-disciplinary documentary praxis. The experimental methods employed in the provenance of My Mother's Village extend to the adoption of an auto-ethnographic and autobiographical mode of storytelling in this exegesis. This marriage of creativity and scholarly research is further reflected in the relationship between the exegesis and corresponding personal documentary film production. -

Because Ivan Kwok knew there was no water in the desert. He brought a barrel of water with him. Then, he got on the aeroplane to the Gobi Desert. Ivan Kwok waited quietly on the plane day after days, but not yet arrived. He fell Ointo sleep. Suddenly, a radio microphone surprised him and announced, “We have arrived at the Gobi Desert.” So, he took up his barrel of water and got off the plane. He walked along the Gobi Desert and drank his water. A stone made him tripped over on the sand. His barrel of water was upside down and he lost all of his water. Did the Gobi Desert make a joke with Ivan Kwok? Ivan Kwok felt thirsty. Suddenly, he saw a blue lake in front of him. Therefore, he jumped into the lake and wanted to drink until he was filled up. However, his mouth was full of sand only. OH! It was just a mirage. -
