Was offensive implosion last week an aberration? NSU had its worst offensive performance in Southland play against Nicholls, with a season-low 256 total yards and a season-worst 3 turnovers, all interceptions.

It stemmed a positive trend. NSU had averaged 436.6 total offensive yards in the previous 4 games (457 at SLU, 465 vs. KWC, 410 at Lamar, 414 vs. McNeese) after averaging only 324 in the first 2 Southland outings. They averaged 6.6 yards per play (264) vs. the Lions , Panthers, Cardinals, and Cowboys, after 5.7 vs. UIW and UCA.

The production coincided with the return of senior OL Terrance Boyd, who missed the first three games after a knee procedure. He and junior left tackle Korliss Johnson are the only two offensive linemen on the two-deep who have been with NSU since before last season. Boyd and Johnson have a combined 5 letters. Folding in the tight ends, the other 10 blockers up front have only a combined 7 letters on the offensive front.

That group has allowed only 6 sacks (1 vs. UIW, KWC and McNeese, 3 by Nicholls) in 7 games.

Interception drought ends, but it’s not pouring yet One mind-numbing stat has evaporated in the last two weeks with interceptions by DE JeMarcus Marshall against McNeese and S Nick Forde against Nicholls.

Marshall’s pick, made with a broken bone in his right hand, was the first interception for NSU since last year, snapping a string of 224 opponent throws without a pickoff.
