Regendered works, such as the TV series Elementary, illustrate the complexity of representation, and the ongoing imbalanced landscape of media. I develop a more cohesive understanding of the fannish counterpublic and its complex approaches to creativity and gender by grounding the research and data collection in fan studies, gender studies, and literary theory. This thesis uses interviews, surveys, and observations of fannish communities, and close readings of regendered texts and media, to develop two theories of regendered effects. One: the position of regendered work within fannish counterpublics is one centred on the conflicts and tensions between lived experiences and the media landscape, performed through the creative forms that characterise their communities. Fannish experiences of gender and sexuality influence their reception of those works, and how they practice regendering as a creative process. Two: these works then reinforce that counterpublic by correcting the gender imbalance of the initial work, and re-othering the expectations of that work. -

CHRONOTOPE IN WESTERN ROLE-PLAYING VIDEO GAMES: AN INVESTIGATION OF THE GENERATION OF NARRATIVE MEANING THROUGH ITS DIALOGICAL RELATIONSHIP WITH THE HEROIC EPIC AND FANTASY A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Eduardo Barbosa Lima Department of Social Sciences, Media and Communication Brunel University London December 2016 Chronotope in Western Role-Playing Video Games: An investigation of the generation of narrative meaning through its dialogical relationship with the Heroic Epic and Fantasy Eduardo Barbosa Lima (1234263) Abstract The development of the video game industry and the increasing popularity of the medium as a form of entertainment have led to significant developments in the discipline of game studies and a growing awareness of the cultural significance of video games as cultural artefacts. While much work has been done to understand the narrative aspect of games, there are still theoretical gaps on the understanding of how video games generate their narrative experience and how this experience is shaped by the player and the game as artefact. This interdisciplinary study investigates how meaning is created in Western Role Playing Games (WRPGs) video games by analysing the narrative strategies they employ in relation to those commonly used in Heroic Epic and Fantasy narratives. It adopts the Bakhtinian concepts of chronotope and dialogue as the main theoretical tools to examine the creation and integration of narratives in WRPGs with a special focus on the time-space perspective. Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Dragon Age Origins were chosen as representatives of the WRPG video game genre while Beowulf and the tale of Sigurd, as it appears in the Poetic Edda and the Volsung Saga, were chosen as representatives of the Heroic Epic poetic tradition. -

However, such readings of fantasy other worlds, rather than celebrating heterogeneity, implicitly see ‘other’ spaces as ‘unreal’ and there either to support the real in some way, as being in some way inferior to the real, or in need of salvation by protagonists from the real world. This thesis proposes a reading of such texts that draws on social theories of constructed spatiality in order to examine first how, to varying degrees, and depending upon the attitude of authors towards the figure of the child, such ‘fantasy’ places can be seen as potentially real “thirdspaces” of performance and agency for protagonists, and thus as neutral spaces of activity rather than confrontation or growth and, second, how such presentations may be seen as reflecting back into the potential for the spatial activity of readers. ii Acknowledgements When I started on the PhD process, the road I travelled along was by no means a straight one. Goss Dr. Andy Lemons ABSTRACT Charlotte and Branwell Brontë’s collaborative writing project, the Glass Town saga, is rarely the subject of academic examination that does not analyze it as either a derivative of the works of Sir Walter Scott or a precursor to Jane Eyre and The Professor. This paper instead considers Glass Town as a work of early fantasy, a reading which allows for an examination of colonialism’s relationship to the genre in its infant stages. Connecting Glass Town to nineteenth-century European theories of African history and development, and to articles of African exploration and conquest, I contextualize the colonialist messages contained in the Brontës’ early writings. -

Tolkien, from which the first version of his mythology would emerge, as one coherent whole, rather than a series of individual creative acts. It argues that all aspects of Tolkien's creativity worked in a dialectic way to bring to life an invented secondary world the complexity of which fantasy literature had not seen before. In examining Tolkien's early creative process this study also offers an alternative profile and assessment of J.R.R. Tolkien, in contradistinction to the popular image of him as the elderly Oxford don, by critically reading him as a young man, student, budding philologist, soldier and World War One survivor. The scope of this thesis is a holistic examination of Tolkien's earliest creative output comprising poetry, prose, language invention and visual works and includes analysis of several of Tolkien’s early creative works which remain either unpublished or under-analysed. -

They recognise the incredible influence the media has in influencing a child’s thinking, value development and behaviour and, through media literacy programs, seek to assist children to become critical thinkers and analyse what they watch. These influences of popular culture can be used within Christian education as well. This paper will explore the role film and literature has in engaging children with biblical truth and aiding them in their spiritual formation.
