  • Plant Trials for Powder Priming of Smc
PLANT TRIALS FOR POWDER PRIMING OF SMC Hamid G. Kia, Bhavesh Shah, Christina Hicks1 GM R&D Center, 30500 Mound Road, Warren, MI 48090 Abstract Based on the information generated at GM R&D Center, six SMC formulations were developed and produced by SMC suppliers and subsequently molded into automotive body panels for powder primer application readiness tests. The panels were evaluated in the lab for shrinkage, moisture absorption, adhesion to the conductive coating, and powder application. Based on the results, all six formulations were approved for plant trials. The trials took place in Shreveport and Lordstown assembly plants. It was noted that the use of infrared heating to bake the powder is detrimental to SMC as it causes rapid heating of SMC substrate, resulting in a high flux of moisture in a short period of time. It was also learned that the experimental conductive coating improves the powder prime capability of SMC and allows powder priming after an extended exposure to the plant environment. Introduction The use of powder primers on SMC body panels has become a major challenge for the automotive industry. The driving force is that using powder primers in place of liquid primers reduces unwanted paint emissions and overspray waste. The downside is that powder primers are not compatible with the current high moisture absorbing plastics in general [1,2], and SMC materials in particular[3,4]. The body panels molded with SMC show paint popping in the bake oven of the powder primer, resulting in an unacceptable surface finish. In a previous study [5], a variety of SMC materials and conductive primers/sealers were evaluated for their ability to produce a pop free surface.

The Little Car that Did Nothing Right: the 1972 Lordstown Assembly Strike, the Chevrolet Vega, and the Unraveling of Growth Economics Thesis Presented in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Master of Arts in the Graduate School of the Ohio State University By By Joseph A. Arena, B.A. History, Graduate Program The Ohio State University 2009 Thesis Committee Kevin Boyle, Advisor Paula Baker Mansel Blackford Copyright by Joseph A. Arena 2009 Abstract In March 1972, the United Automobile Workers (UAW) struck for eighteen days at the General Motors (GM) assembly complex in Lordstown, Ohio. Previous historical studies have focused on the origins of labor-management conflict at the factory. Drawing upon documents from the UAW’s archives, the business press, and automotive industry trade publications, this thesis contextualizes the strike by linking shop floor conditions with GM’s business strategy, the Nixon administration’s economic policy, and working class life in the Mahoning Valley. The UAW and GM saw the Chevrolet Vega, manufactured at Lordstown, as the domestic industry’s best response to import competition. But bureaucratic imperatives, especially within GM’s management structure, encouraged a series of confrontations between the company and union that culminated in the strike and undermined the Vega’s viability. The thesis expands our understanding of an iconic moment in American labor history and illuminates the ongoing problems confronting the U.S. automobile industry. ii Dedicated to My Mother and Father iii Acknowledgements No historian works alone. • Faurecia's Lean Management System
Faurecia’s Lean Management System Dean R. Manna [email protected] Robert Beaves [email protected] Abstract This paper deals with a company named Faurecia, especially their Exhaust Systems division, located in their Lordstown, OH assembly plant which produced the exhaust system for the Chevrolet Cobalt. Unfortunately, Faurecia did not receive the contract for the Chevrolet Cruze™ so the facility closed in June 2010. At the time of closing, some of the supervisors took positions at the newly opened just-in-time (JIT) facility in Toledo. A detailed discussion about the JIT facility in Toledo and its lean management system operations contrasted to the Lordstown plant was documented. Through detailed open-ended questions, it was found that Toledo JIT plant runs similarly to the Lordstown plant. Based on supervisors’ previous knowledge of how the Lordstown assembly plant operated is the focus this paper on their use of lean management to produce parts and manage inventories, including a discussion of their suppliers and use of logistics. Faurecia is an international automotive parts supplier to all of the major automakers around the globe. They are a component part supplier who offers multiple parts across multiple divisions of the automotive industry. These divisions include Exhaust Systems, Interior Component Systems, Exterior Component Systems, and Seating Systems. They operate nearly two hundred and forty production sites and 38 research and development sites in 33 countries. They claim to be “the largest company that you’ve never heard of”. They are a French owned company, with a history that goes all the way back to the early eighteen hundreds when the Peugeot brothers opened a steel foundry to make saw blades, named “Peugeot.” Peugeot eventually started producing automobiles.
