EDITORIAL: CHEF GETS A SAY As we walked into the school’s vacant cafeteria, we were appalled by the still- ness of the lunchroom, usually replaced by the tu- multuous clusters of students clamoring for their meals. There was but one staff kitchen member out- side of her working place: Ms. Pulliam. Despite her lost voice, all our questions were eagerly replied to with a sweet smile. Everyone, at one point of anoth- er, takes for granted these hardworking and diligent people who quietly and efficiently serve those around them to make our world a trouble-free place. We adore our celebrities and the attention-seekers of the world, but, do we ever stop and look at those who pave the ways of our lives, such as our kitchen staff? According to Ms. Pulliam, she and the rest of the kitchen staff start their day off at 6:00 am, to accept food deliveries for the day’s meals and leave around 1:30 pm. Four hours before lunch is even served, the chefs are working away on the food that feeds hundreds of students at 8:00 am. Though it’s hard to appreciate now, we must be thankful for the school kitchen staff, and everything they do to keep everyone well fed at HMS. But, just being thankful is not enough. Expressing your attitude includes sim- ple acts of kindness like verbally thanking our cooks. Ms. Pulliam says that she loves her job and that one her favorite parts about it is when students are polite and kind to the lunchroom staff. “It makes their week!” -Ms. Pulliams states. Finishing your food with gratitude and only buying what you need are two of the best ways you can show appreciation to the chefs. As you move through these middle school and high school years, remember all those who gave you the fuel to do so. 3 MUSIC AND ARTS SCIENCE The future of “Smart” Continued from page 1. There is one new gadget being invented that might just take the cake for the wearable tech era: ‘smart’ contacts. Smart contacts are contact lenses that will include a camera in order to videotape and record anything in eye’s view. Your most precious memories could be recorded forever by a simple blink of an eye. That time you scored the winning goal of your soccer tournament, or met the celebrity you’ve always idolized can be easily video-taped and stored for a lifetime to come. Many compa- nies are in the race to produce these Smart Contacts including Sony, Sam- sung and Google. While Sony and Sam- sung are focusing on the camera part of the contacts, Google is designing Smart Contacts for medical purposes. Their contacts will do everything from assisting people with serious eye conditions, to helping diabetics measure their glucose levels. Com- panies are even creating contact lenses that will cure color blindness. Though en- chanting to think about, Smart Con- tacts may still be very theoretical, es- pecially when it comes for Sony and Samsung design- ing their virtual reali- ty products. Engi- neers still have to work out many detail pertaining to eye movement, and because some smart contact lenses focus on videotaping and photography, they need to be able to tell the difference between a natural blink (for necessity) versus a purposeful blink to activate the camera. Another issue with this new idea is that smart contacts would make it very to spy, or record and send out data that is top secret or classified. Smart contact lenses will send information straight up into our vision and would be extremely hard to control. These devices could be hacked and send the virtual reality data right to us. Just imagine the endless forms of mind control and virtual reality you read about in Science-fiction. Recording exactly what we see might be just be one of the hundreds of new technology that will change life on Earth for future generations. 4 POLITICS THE PRESIDENTIAL RACE By Noah E.     Journal of Religion & Society Volume 7 (2005) ISSN 1522-5658 The Bartman Ball and Sacrifice Ambiguity in an American Ritual Jeffrey Scholes, University of Denver/Iliff School of Theology Abstract Although the power of rituals to provide societal meaning and structure has been on the decline for sometime in the U.S., on February 26, 2004 at a popular Chicago restaurant, an infamous baseball was ceremoniously destroyed in the fashion of a classic sacrifice ritual. Lacking the kind of surrounding society that traditionally produces such rituals, this event seems anomalous. Yet, I will argue, with the aid of certain ritual sacrifice theories, that this event performed a classic sacrificial function – that of reestablishing the proper relationship between the Cubs' fans and its players – and thus is continuous with certain sacrifice rituals of pre-modern societies. At the same time, an underlying intention of those staging the ritual, to receive publicity for their restaurant, served to circumscribe the power of the ritual thus impressing a “modern” stamp on it thereby distinguishing this sacrifice from its predecessors. Introduction [1] A quick glance at the literature in ritual studies over the last century provides one with the undeniable impression of an overwhelming focus on non-Western, traditional cultures. Societies operating under a fully integrated cosmology that binds the community to a deity and to one another have tended to generate vivid rituals that help to maintain social cohesion, hence the focus. Therefore, the neglect of ritual analysis of post-industrialized societies can be attributed, in part, to a lack of conspicuous rituals such as initiation rites and sacrifices.

But the latter three had been traded away in deals that killed the Sox. The Cubs are more likely than not playoff-bound, unless a late-season Cardinals surge totally shocks them and puts past collapses to shame. The White Sox are among the game’s disappointments, frittering away a 23-10 start and dropping far out of the wild-card race before the July 31 trade deadline. So fans of both teams can gear themselves mentally for different viewpoints in the last third of the 2016. Happiness on the North Side, abject discontent on the South Side. At least the rooters know where they stand. But when their teams appear locked and loaded to win, and just missed the postseason, many of the fans needed counseling. The sense of disappointment, even betrayal, was keen. Popular belief states the 1967 Sox and 1969 Cubs are the top near-misses in history.
