SF Giants Press Clips Saturday, June 3, 2017
SF Giants Press Clips Saturday, June 3, 2017 San Francisco Chronicle Younger Giants rout Phillies behind Blach, Span Henry Schulman PHILADELPHIA — In the midst of his first five-hit game as a Giant, Denard Span stood in center field, looked to his right and saw Orlando Calixte in his fourth big-league game. To his left was Austin Slater in his major-league debut. In the dugout was Christian Arroyo. On the mound, 26-year-old rookie Ty Blach was humming toward his first big-league shutout and complete game. When Plan A goes awry in baseball, Plan B is usually youth. In the midst of a terrible season, the Giants are moving in that direction. “I know these guys are definitely bringing a little energy,” Span said after a highly irregular 10-0 Giants rout of the even more forlorn Phillies. “Sometimes it can give the team a little freshness.” Under Plan A, which included Madison Bumgarner healthy, Blach still might be in the bullpen instead of the rotation, where he is doing a phenomenal MadBum impersonation. 1 Blach allowed seven singles but only one runner reached second base in his 112-pitch victory. He has won his past four starts and finished at least seven innings in six of the eight starts he has made as Bumgarner’s place-holder. Also, facing a brutal pitching staff on a team that went 6-22 in May, Blach became the second pitcher in the past 33 years and the first Giant since Ray Sadecki in 1969 to draw three walks. -

In his Tuesday night win, the 78-year-old Sanders, a self-de- scribed democratic socialist, beat back a strong challenge from the 38-year-old former mayor of South Bend, Ind . The dueling Democrats represent different generations, see divergent paths to the nomination and embrace conflicting visions of America’s future. As Sanders and Buttigieg cel- ebrated, Amy Klobuchar scored an unexpected third-place finish that gives her a road out of New Hampshire as the primary season moves on to the string of state-by- state contests that lie ahead. Since much of the country shut down in March amid the pandemic’s early stages in the United States, we’ve watched baseball consistently lag behind the rest of the major sports. As contract disputes Accessed: 7/31/2020 Hey Baseball, Get Your Act Together and Pause the Season (https://www.bostonglobe.com/2020/05/28/sports/inside-multibillion-dollar-dispute- between-mlb-its-players/) amongst millionaires and billionaires left behind the minor leaguers and stadium staff from popular discourse, the sport looked to be racked with disunity and potentially looking to skip the 2020 season. Maybe it should have. As preseason concerns surrounding player health and safety were quelled during the summer camp or “Spring Training 2.0” in late June and early July, problems remained. Even disregarding the concerns surrounding prioritizing players for tests during a time when most Americans struggle to get tests, let alone one- or two-day turnarounds on test results, the restart process teetered on the line between morality and profiteering. Now, after less than one week of games, all of the problems of playing sports during a pandemic have reared their ugly heads. -

It was as if nobody else had a chance. The Rams were returning several key players from their state championship team. Two of the top players in the state were back in 6’5” Jarvis Williams and 6’4” Karl Godine. The scary thing about this team is even without Williams and Godine, Kashmere would have been one of the top teams in the state. To follow the 1975 season was to follow Kashmere. The numbers they put up were staggering and soon became one of the top teams in the entire country. Many knowledge followers of the game were making strong comparisons to the great Wheatley teams of the past. Would Kashmere lose any games? Would they repeat as state champions? Was it all hype or were they really as strong as advertised? These were the questions that the ‘75 season would answer in exciting fashion.
