Pre-Tournament Notes 2019 Farmers Insurance Open Pre-Tournament Notes Dates: January 24-27, 2018 Where: San Diego, California Courses: Torrey Pines Golf Course; South Course (host), North Course Field Size: 156 2018 Champion: Jason Day Purse: $7,100,00 ($1,278,000) FedExCup: 500 points to the winner Seven things you should know about the 2019 Farmers Insurance Open 1. An eight-time winner at Torrey Pines (Seven Farmers Insurance Open titles, one U.S. Open title/2008), Tiger Woods will make his 2018-19 PGA TOUR Season debut. It marks his first start in an official PGA TOUR event since winning the TOUR Championship for his 80 th career TOUR victory. 2. 24 of the top-50 players in the Official World Golf Ranking are in the field, including nine of the top-15. 3. San Diego native Xander Schauffele, who blitzed the field at the Sentry Tournament of Champions with a final-round 11-under 62, is in search of his third win in his last three starts. Schauffele has missed the cut in all three starts at the Farmers Insurance Open. 4. 10 of the 12 Farmers Insurance Open champions have qualified for the FedExCup finale, the TOUR Championship (Scott Stallings/2014 and Tiger Woods/2008). After winning the event in 2008, Tiger Woods was unable to compete in the FedExCup Playoffs due to injury. Woods (2007) and Brandt Snedeker (2012) are the only two players to win the Farmers Insurance Open and the FedExCup in the same season. 5. Defending champion Jason Day looks to become a three-time winner of the Farmers Insurance Open and the fourth player to go back-to-back, joining J.C. Snead (1975-76), Phil Mickelson (2000-01) and Tiger Woods (2005-08). 6. Jordan Spieth returns to Torrey Pines, site of his professional debut (2013), for the first time since 2015. 7. The last eight winners of the Farmers Insurance Open started the week on the South Course. Ben Crane (2010) was the last champion to start play on the North Course. A look back at the 2018 Farmers Insurance Open In a playoff that was suspended due to darkness (five holes) and completed on Monday (one hole), Jason Day defeated Sweden’s Alex Noren after six extra holes to win the Farmers Insurance Open for the second time in his career. Ryan Palmer was eliminated from the playoff after the first hole. • The six-hole playoff was the longest in the tournament’s 67-year history and was just the third in the last 50 years of being played at Torrey Pines to last three holes or more. • Day became the ninth player to win the Farmers Insurance Open multiple times. • The win was Day’s first of two victories in 2017-18 (Wells Fargo Championship). He ended the season 16 th in the FedExCup standings, finishing in the top 30 for the eighth time in nine years. More on Jason Day • Is making his fourth start of the 2018-19 PGA TOUR Season; Finished T5 in his season debut at THE CJ CUP @ NINE BRIDGES and 13 th most recently at the Sentry Tournament of Champions. • Between his wins at the Farmers Insurance Open (2015/2018) missed the cut in both starts. • DATE ISSUED: ATTENTION: SUBJECT: SUMMARY October 10
THE CITY OF SAN DIEGO To THE PARK AND RECREATION BOARD DATE ISSUED: October 10, 2018 REPORT NO. 201 ATTENTION: Park and Recreation Board Agenda of October 18, 2018 SUBJECT: 2018 GOLF DIVISION BUSINESS PLAN UPDATE SUMMARY THIS IS AN INFORMATIONAL ITEM ONLY. NO ACTION IS REQUIRED ON THE PART OF THE BOARD. BACKGROUND Since 1919, the City has managed and operated a municipal golf program for residents and visitors in San Diego. Currently, the City operates three golf complexes: Balboa Park Golf Course, Mission Bay Golf Course and Torrey Pines Golf Course. In 2012, City Council approved the Golf Division Business Plan (the "Business Plan"), which provides a framework that guides the operation and management of City operated golf complexes. The plan's goal is to provide excellent playing opportunities to the public, ensure golf complexes are properly maintained and maintain the Golf Enterprise Fund's long-term financial sustainability. The Business Plan outlines a divisional review process whereby the Municipal Golf Committee provides advisory input on a regular basis. Additionally, the Golf Division provides the City's Park and Recreation Board with an annual update, while the City Council's Environment Committee receives a formal update on the Business Plan every three years. DISCUSSION OF ITEM: The goal for the Business Plan was to provide a guiding document for Golf Division managers to improve customer service, effectively market City golf facilities and place the division on sound financial ground. The framework and flexibility of the plan has been effective in allowing the division to adapt to market changes in a much more efficient manner and has helped to increase participation.
