Can You Predict a Hit?
CAN YOU PREDICT A HIT? FINDING POTENTIAL HIT SONGS THROUGH LAST.FM PREDICTORS BACHELOR THESIS MARVIN SMIT (0720798) DEPARTMENT OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE RADBOUD UNIVERSITEIT NIJMEGEN SUPERVISORS: DR. L.G. VUURPIJL DR. F. GROOTJEN Abstract In the field of Music Information Retrieval, studies on Hit Song Science are becoming more and more popular. The concept of predicting whether a song has the potential to become a hit song is an interesting challenge. This paper describes my research on how hit song predictors can be utilized to predict hit songs. Three subject groups of predictors were gathered from the Last.fm service, based on a selection of past hit songs from the record charts. By gathering new data from these predictors and using a term frequency-inversed document frequency algorithm on their listened tracks, I was able to determine which songs had the potential to become a hit song. The results showed that the predictors have a better sense on listening to potential hit songs in comparison to their corresponding control groups. Smore Dangerous Songs: and the Banned Played On
SMore Dangerous Songs: And the Banned Played On 16 songs banned by the BBC By the Britain’s Most Dangerous Songs production team The Kinks – Lola Written by singer Ray Davies, Lola is about a relationship between a man and a “woman” who turns out to be a transvestite. But it wasn’t this gender confusion that worried the BBC. The song was banned for including the words “coca-cola” which was against their policy on product placement. Davies had to interrupt the band’s American tour to fly back to London to re-record the lyric as “cherry-cola” for the single release. The Sex Pistols – Anarchy In The UK The Sex Pistols’ debut single, Anarchy in the UK was banned following their controversial appearance on the TV news programme, Today. The song had already been played on the radio but the band had caused such outrage by swearing on television that they were banished from the airwaves. Their next single, God Save The Queen was also banned but it didn’t stop The Sex Pistols storming their way up the charts. John Leyton – Johnny Remember Me This was the first and only No.1 hit for singer and actor John Leyton who starred in the TV series, Harpers West One. The song tells the story of a young man haunted by his dead lover and was one of many ‘death discs’ popular at the time but banned by the BBC. Other censored ‘splatter platters’ include, Tell Laura I Love Her by Ray Ricky Valance, Teen Angel by Mark Dinning and Terry by Twinkle. -

Jimmy Somerville - the Official Biography
JIMMY SOMERVILLE - THE OFFICIAL BIOGRAPHY The unmistakable voice of Bronski Beat and The Communards, featured on massive hits such as Smalltown Boy and Don't Leave Me This Way – it can be none other than Jimmy Somerville. Bronski Beat not only introduced the world to Jimmy's unique voice, their debut smash hit Smalltown Boy tackled pertinent social issues with it’s lyric addressing the isolation and rejection felt by a provincial gay youth forced into leaving town. Although not the first pop song to deal with this topic, Bronski Beat’s chart friendly early 80's electronic dance sound and the everyday ordinariness and honesty of the three performers, made Smalltown Boy the biggest record about gay issues there'd ever been. Jimmy’s next band The Communards enjoyed a string of hits from their two hit albums Communards (1986) and Red (1987). One moment the Communards were hurtling to the number one spot - a position they held for weeks in the UK in 1986 - with their energetic, hedonistic cover version of the Philly soul classic Don't Leave Me This Way, the next stunning audiences into silent awe with their touching lament for a loved one lost to AIDS, For A Friend. 1989 saw Jimmy embark on a solo career with 5 more hit singles and two albums; Read My Lips (1989) and The Singles Collection (1990). These included a stirring cover of Sylvester's disco anthem You Make Me Feel (Mighty Real). Jimmy's continued outspokenness on gay issues didn't prevent his records being played and selling in huge quantities. -
