Chicago Wolves Game Notes IOWA at CHICAGO MARCH 9, 2019 7 P.M 2018-19 Chicago Wolves Game Notes IOWA AT CHICAGO MARCH 9, 2019 7 p.m. CW50 2018-19 RALLYING TO SET UP A SHOWDOWN TALE OF THE TAPE Playing without AHL leading scorer Daniel Carr, who joined Tomas Hyka and Reid Duke on the list of injured forwards, the Chicago Wolves needed a little time Friday night to figure out their brave new REGULAR-SEASON SERIES world. The Wolves entered the third period trailing the Milwaukee Admirals 1-0, but rallied for four 3-1-2-0 Iowa | 3-2-1-0 Chicago goals on the road in the final 20 minutes to snap a two-game losing streak. Not only did the late flurry give the squad a confidence boost, it enabled the Wolves to grab sole possession of first place in the AHL’s Central Division. Chicago’s 75 points are one more than the Grand Rapids Griffins and Iowa Wild, who enjoyed their own character-building clash Friday night. The Wild fell behind 2-0 early in Michigan, but rallied for a 4-3 overtime win. That makes tonight’s stakes 31-17-7-5 34-18-5-2 even bigger. 2018-19 Chicago Wolves Game Notes CHICAGO AT IOWA APRIL 12, 2019 7 p.m. AHL TV 2018-19 POTENTIAL PLAYOFF OPPONENTS The Chicago Wolves have controlled their own fate when it comes to the postseason, clinching a playoff TALE OF THE TAPE spot on March 29 with a victory in Grand Rapids before securing the Central Division title for the third REGULAR-SEASON SERIES year in a row on April 6 with a win over Colorado. The only question mark now is the Wolves’ first-round 3-2-2-0 Iowa | 4-2-1-0 Chicago opponent. Grand Rapids sits in second with 87 points with two games remaining and needs just one point to reach the postseason. Milwaukee’s 84 points are good for third and its magic number to clinch a playoff berth is four, but an overtime loss to Rockford on Tuesday put the Admirals in a vulnerable position with the 35-26-8-5 rest of the field so close on their heels. 43-21-5-4 LEADING SCORERS IN SERIES Iowa moved into fourth with 83 points, just one point back from Milwaukee, with a win over Grand Rapids on Wednesday. • Evaluating Team-Level Pace of Play in Ice Hockey Using Spatio
Playing Fast Not Loose: Evaluating team-level pace of play in ice hockey using spatio-temporal possession data David Yu*, Christopher Boucher, Luke Bornn, Mehrsan Javan SPORTLOGiQ, Montreal, Quebec, Canada *Email: [email protected] 1. Introduction Pace of play is an important characteristic in ice hockey as well as other team-invasion sports. While in basketball pace has traditionally been defined as the number of possessions per 48 minutes, here we focus on pace and movement within a possession, leveraging the tremendous advancements in the capture of spatio-temporal data in team sports in recent years [1]. While much attention has been focused on speed and distance covered at the player level, spatio-temporal datasets also allow for more granular definitions of team-level pace of play such as measures of the speed between successive events or the speed of a possession as a whole. While ice hockey has always been one of the fastest-moving sports, rule and tactical changes in the past 15 years, such as the removal of the rule limiting 2-line passes and the stricter enforcement of obstruction/holding infractions, have placed further emphasis on pace. At the start of the 2016-17 NHL season, Paul Maurice, head coach of the Winnipeg Jets said: "This game is just so fast now... I've seen fast players and I've seen fast teams, it's the first time I thought we had a fast league. The speed, to me, is the one thing that’s changed more than anything. Our team, and the league as well, is as fast as I’ve ever seen it.” [2] Given the emphasis on pace in hockey in recent years, it is surprising that a recent study found a slight negative correlation between various metrics of forward attacking pace and offensive output such as shots and goals [3].

The Wolves’ magic number to clinch the Central sits at 6 entering today’s matinee REGULAR-SEASON SERIES against the Rockford IceHogs. 2-6-0-0 Rockford | 6-1-0-1 Chicago LAST MEETING April 17, 2021 While the Sam Pollock Trophy serves as the tangible goal, Wolves head coach Ryan Warsofsky finds himself focused on intangible targets as well. “I think (we’re focused) on what it means to be a pro hockey player,’ Warsofsky said. “We have players that are still learning. It doesn’t really matter if there’s playoffs or not. What it means to be a pro: 11-17-1-0 18-8-1-2 How you prepare yourself for practice is consistent. How you play is consistent. Right now, we don’t know what we’re getting shift-to-shift. That’s something that we’re preaching right now (as) coaches.” SERIES LEADERS WHAT WERE THE ODDS? 2018-19 Chicago Wolves Game Notes TUCSON AT CHICAGO DECEMBER 16, 2018 3 p.m. THE U TOO OWNING THE MIDDLE THIRD 2018-19 Every team wants to get their season off to a good start. And, of course, every team wants to finish TALE OF THE TAPE strong and head into the postseason on a roll. But what about the middle third of the schedule? Those REGULAR-SEASON SERIES games count just as much in the standings. 0-1-0-0 Tucson | 1-0-0-0 Chicago The Chicago Wolves opened the middle third of this year’s 76-game schedule with a 4-2 victory over the Tucson Roadrunners on Saturday night at Allstate Arena. That suggests this year’s team might be made of the same stuff as the last two Wolves squads that rode strong efforts in the middle third of the schedule to the Central Division title. Last season, Rocky Thompson’s Wolves posted a 17-5-2-1 record (.740) during Games 26-50 to vault 15-7-2-1 14-9-2-1 from last place to third in the Central Division. In 2016-17, Craig Berube’s Wolves earned a 15-7-1-2 record (.660) during the middle third of the season to climb from third to second.
