We will be having tea, a quiz and a raffle during the afternoon. I am very pleased to tell you that we have another volunteer in the office, starting very soon. Many of you will remember Ali, who has been one of our volunteer drivers, is now able to help on some Mondays during the month. Welcome Ali and we hope you enjoy your time amongst the organised chaos in our very busy office ! This seems like a really good opportunity to thank all our volunteers again for all their hard work for V.I.S.O.R. It is very much appreciated.     Official January 2020 – December 2021 i Official Kew Green Management Plan 2020-21: Foreword Kew Green is a vitally important asset for local people and visitors. It has been designated a Conservation Area, due to its character, as a fine example of an historic Green, the associated high quality of mostly 18th century development, riverside environment and village character. The London Borough of Richmond upon Thames will aspire to maintain and manage the Green to the highest standards. The management plan is based on an audit of the Green following central government guidance known as PPG 17. This is explained within this document, but the approach is based on common sense. We believe that it is important to get the simple things right. Is the green space clean and tidy? Is the grass cut? Are the trees and shrubs well maintained? Is any graffiti removed effectively and quickly? Working with local communities to deliver the highest quality of service is our top priority and it is hoped that this document will provide a framework for continuing and improving dialogue. The site will be maintained appropriately and the local community, the Kew Society and Kew Green Cricket Club will be consulted on any proposed changes or improvements to facilities or infrastructure. In particular, the borough works closely with a local organisation called the Kew Society. We actively encourage suggestions about all aspects of the Green. While the Council is open to the changing demands from the local community with regards to facilities within any of the borough’s parks, the Green is a long established local green space that is well maintained.

    Playing Fields Investigation Rapporteur’s Foreword Having played football and cricket on many of London's playing fields during my school, college and now my adult life, l know too well the controversies surrounding the loss of playing fields. Two key things struck me during our inquiry. Not enough use is made of the planning framework to protect our playing fields in London, and the sporting communities who regularly using them are not recognised as custodians of green spaces of London. I hope this report can go some way to preserving London’s playing fields, increasing access to, and use of them. Our report should be seen as a reference guide for all those who are working to maintain and develop playing fields. In it we: • Attempt to learn the lessons of recent loss of playing fields. • Map the nature of the growing relationship between artificial turf pitches (ATPs ) and grass playing fields, so as to find innovative approaches to fund their long term future; and • Set up baseline data and maps on playing fields availability across London beyond just school ones, covering others in the rest of the public sector and private ones which will help draw a line under the issue. Like many off-side decisions in football, it’s often not worth looking back on the ref’s decision but lets look ahead instead. And the best way to do this will be to have an annual check on where we are with this head count of playing fields in 2006. Hopefully this way we can maintain the 1500 playing fields we have identified for the future use of Londoners in the lead up to and beyond the Olympic & Paralympics in 2012.

    LONDON BOROUGH OF RICHMOND UPON THAMES PLAYING PITCH STRATEGY Action Plan Update March 2019 LONDON BOROUGH OF RICHMOND UPON THAMES PLAYING PITCH STRATEGY – Action Plan Update Purpose of this document This document relates to, and should be read in conjunction with, the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames Playing Pitch Strategy (PPS), which was developed for the Council by Knight, Kavanagh & Page (KKP) and published in March 2018. Monitoring and updating the PPS forms an important part of the planning process, with guidance from Sport England recommending that the actions identified within the Strategy are reviewed on an annual basis. In light of this, the Council participated in a ‘Stage E’ meeting in March 2019 with representatives of Sport England, Sport Richmond, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), England Hockey, the Football Association (FA), the Football Foundation, the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), and the Rugby Football Union (RFU). The intention of this meeting was to monitor the delivery of the recommendations and action plan identified in the PPS, and to highlight emergent issues and opportunities. This meeting was not intended to review the overarching strategic recommendations identified within Part 5 of the PPS, which are considered to remain applicable and relevant. Guide to using this document The site by site action plans identified within ‘Part 6’ of the Playing Pitch Strategy have been replicated in the tables below, each of which covers one of the three study areas utilised in the original assessment study (Hampton & Teddington; Richmond; and Twickenham). For reference, these tables are identified on pages 45-51, 54-59, and 62-65 of the PPS, respectively.

All of us who knew Peter knew that everything he involved himself in he went into 100%. He was never short of an opinion, never afraid to voice it and always with the interests of the sport and its supporters at heart. When he took over as "Backtrack" editor he transformed a small fledgling publication into something whose publication occupied almost his every waking hour. And the effort put in was clearly there for all to see on the written page. All of the subsequent editors of the magazine have essentially inherited Peter's template.

    FROM RICHMOND HISTORY, JOURNAL OF THE RICHMOND LOCAL HISTORY SOCIETY 2015 Kew’s memorials for those who died in the First World War Remembering the Men of Kew MARIAN MOLLETT Just seven weeks after the outbreak of war on 4 August 1914 the October edition of the Kew Church magazine published a list of ‘the names of the young men who have gone from Kew to take their place in fighting for their King and Country’. There were 104. Of these, 19 would be killed and a further 10 had brothers who would die in the service of their King. By the end of the war, a total of 103 men from the parish would die. After the war a permanent memorial to the dead became a pressing concern, fulfilled in Kew with a number of memorials, each with a different purpose. Today these seem inevitable structures in our landscape and we might assume that they were built rapidly and without controversy. It was not so. This article explores the relationship between three of those memorials and the compromises their construction involved. Throughout the country the creation of such memorials was an enterprise of communities and individuals, with the initiators of the memorials making their own choices as to who should be commemorated and how this should be done. Both of the Kew Church of England parishes, St Anne’s in the north and St Luke’s in the south, recorded the names of the dead who had some link with its parish – usually, but not exclusively, a residential link – either recently or at some time in the past.
