Photo: © Howard Sooley Today, Art Fund director Stephen Deuchar announced the launch of Art Fund’s £3.5 million public appeal to save and preserve Prospect Cottage in Dungeness, Kent, the home and garden of visionary filmmaker, artist and activist, Derek Jarman, for the nation. A charity registered in England and Wales 209174, Scotland SC038331 Art Fund needs to raise £3.5m by 31 March 2020 to purchase Prospect Cottage and to establish a permanently funded programme to conserve and maintain the building, its contents and its garden for the future. Major grants from the National Heritage Memorial Fund, Art Fund, the Linbury Trust, and private donations have already taken the campaign half way towards its target. Art Fund is now calling on the public to make donations of all sizes to raise the funds still needed. Through an innovative partnership between Art Fund, Creative Folkestone and Tate, the success of this campaign will enable continued free public access to the cottage’s internationally celebrated garden, the launch of artist residencies, and guided public visits within the cottage itself. -

Artists Gary Hume and Sol Calero present works from the Hiscox Collection to go on public display for the first time Accelerate your escape: Gary Hume selects from the Hiscox Collection 25 August – 3 January 2021 Sol Calero selects from the Hiscox Collection 13 January – 2 May 2021 Important works by renowned artists including Etel Adnan (b.1925), Nan Goldin (b.1953), David Hockney (b.1937), Joan Miró (1893-1983), Eduardo Paolozzi (1924-2005) and Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), will be on public view for the first time in two consecutive, artist-curated exhibitions drawn from the Hiscox Collection, taking place at Whitechapel Gallery from August. The series forms part of the Gallery’s ongoing commitment to showing rarely seen public and private collections. Global specialist insurer Hiscox have been collecting modern and contemporary art for over 50 years. The collection comprises 1000 works by renowned artists, including Grayson Perry, Tacita Dean and Peter Doig. With no single work ever in storage, this living collection is displayed across the company’s 35 global offices – on the walls of common areas and meeting rooms, enlivening the working environment with art that provokes thought or sparks creativity. British painter Gary Hume (b.1962) and Berlin-based Venezualan artist Sol Calero (b.1982) each bring new perspectives to the Hiscox Collection in their personal selection of works at Whitechapel Gallery. For Gary Hume, making and viewing art are a means of escape. At Whitechapel Gallery, Hume invites us to escape the every day and to find new joys and sorrows in the myriad worlds imagined for us by the artists he has selected. -
