DAKOTA TERRITORY GUN COLLECTORS ASSOCIATION, INC.

FALL EDITION OCTOBER 2017 Association Office Address DTGCA Vicki L. Morin Fall is almost here! Hope everyone had a great summer and ready for fall hunting Executive Secretary PO Box 5053 and then the holidays of Thanksgiving and Christmas. West Fargo, ND 58078 701-361-9215 message A few updates… With the SD Board Member vacancy created by the passing of

PRESIDENT Sonny, the open position has been filled by Rick Drennen of Flandreau, SD. Rick Brandon Maddox has been a DTGCA member and FFL holding vendor for many years, his experience Sioux Falls, SD as a retired school teacher will bring additional insights and diversity to our Board. Rick’s appointment is temporary until the annual meeting in Feb 2018 in Aberdeen. VICE PRESIDENT Tom Seaburg Carrington, ND We are disappointed to announce the NRA decided against combining their NRA Collector’s Gun Show as part of our February Trophy Show. The reason for the PAST PRESIDENT Larry Jones decision was due to weather concerns, they chose Texas in November. It appears Verona, ND Sioux Falls, SD in February is a hard sell, I am not giving up though. I moved from

BOARD OF DIRECTORS Florida to South Dakota and totally understand the perceived perceptions of winter Don Glynn in the Dakotas…. We will keep trying! Fullerton, ND

Paul Herman As my term comes closer to an end, I am continuing to actively seek feedback on Pierre, SD how we can get more people to attend DTGCA gun shows, let me know! We plan

Daethal Dockter to do more billboards this year to advertise the shows, we hope to also advertise Milbank, SD on social media to recruit new attendees as well.

This picture is of a Mark 1 1903 Springfield 30-06. This one is a dummy training rifle pre WW1 stamped on the metal butt plate is Mark 1 U.S.N. Parris Dunn Corp. Clarinda, Iowa. Newer models had a device milled into the left side receiver to act as an ejec- tion port. A real working model at 60% value is $750.00 and at 100% value is $4000. To see this gun in , watch the movie of Sergeant York staring Gary Cooper. A little history about this gun, it was acquired by my Uncle Neal Sherwood who was a Navy Officer in San Diego, CA. In turn he took it to my Uncle George Sherwood in Missoula, MT in the 1950’s and our family went to Missoula every year for Thanksgiving to visit relatives. Uncle George gave this gun to my father, Bud Vertin as they knew he was not a hunter and wouldn’t know the difference between a real gun and a dummy training rifle. It was always kept in my Grandma Sherwood’s bedroom closet as she lived with us. As this was not a real firing gun, my parents let us use it in the backyard playing cowboys, my brother and I were the envy of the neighborhood boys. The 50’s & 60’s were great times to grow up. My brother George built a solid walnut Crossbow from a kit in High School Woodshop, can you imagine a school letting a boy do that today!!! I would like to thank the DTCGA for donating to the Outdoor Adventure Center in Brookings, SD as my grandson is a Boy Scout in Brookings and uses the Center for camping and shooting compound bows. I also would like to thank my good friend Bill Braun from Wahpeton for getting me to join the DTGCA by paying for my first year of dues for me many, many years ago. Thanks Bill!!! PS, this rifle looks great hanging in my Gun Room.

IF THE WALLS COULDTALK

While attending a Gun show in Phillips ,Wisconsin this past winter I was introduced to a fellow who's son had found a old Whitney-Kennedy lever rifle in the walls of a house he was tearing down some fifteen years ago near Prentice, Wisconsin . This gentleman learned about my interest in these old , my modest collection numbering three at that time . In the course of our conversation I learned his son was willing to sell this ole gal . Well, arrangements were made for him to bring it to a show near my home which is near Mountain, Wisconsin some 140 miles away . Needless to say it was one of the longest months of my life waiting for its arrival. Those of you who've made deals know it's not wise to push the envelope, and ruin the deal . Well the day came and after looking it over, stock appeared to be hand made, no sandpaper, but pretty darn decent, a surprisingly good bore, a deal was made . After a little elbow grease she was ready for the range. Functioned perfectly, Winchester did a smart move by buying up and closing this company back in 1886 . I now own two 38/40's, one 44/40, and a large frame 45/60 which is the prize of my collection. Along with my four Whitney's, I've a fair amount of Colt rifles, Marlin rifles and of course the Winchesters. One old timer labeled me a ( drifter ) one who collects all makes. Well like me you can wonder how long this old rifle stood hidden in those walls and why! Thanks for your time. Steven Elbe, Wisconsin Must say, I'm a first year member to your fine organization! Great group of people.
