JAZZ AND JUDAISM: AN EXPLORATION OF THEIR SYNTHESIS IN DISPLACEMENT CAMP MUSIC by KARA LEANN STEWART (Under the Direction of Dr. Stephen Valdez) ABSTRACT Retaining and rebuilding Jewish identity in German-occupied Poland in the World War II and post-war era was a daunting task. Combining American jazz with European Ashkenazic tradition, Jewish musicians symbolically rebelled during the war, and many wrote displacement camp songs and instrumental pieces immediately following the war. The contextualization and place of these pieces and their jazz influence in the new phase of Ashkenazic culture are explored. Two pieces in particular, The Happy Boys' “We Long For A Home” and related musician Leo Spellman's “Rhapsody 1939-1945,” are used as case studies of displacement camp music because they capture the attitude that characterized Jewish life after the Holocaust. Through the incorporation of jazz, Jewish culture, and versatile expression of music, the Jewish identity could be healed and renewed. Dedication and hard work have brought you to this moment. Enjoy it, but also take the opportunity to thank the family and friends who sup- ported you during your journey. I know that they are proud of you, as are all of us at Carolina. I hope that your Carolina education challenged and inspired you, and that what you learned here in Chapel Hill prepared you to pursue your dreams. Today you join the ranks of Carolina alumni who have gone out into the world and made a difference. We know you will, too. The University's motto is light and liberty. When you leave Chapel Hill, you carry that light with you, and I hope it will help you transform the future. Nothing thrills us more than seeing our graduates go out and change the world. At my graduation in 1986, Senior Class President John Kennedy spoke about our prodigious consumption of pizza and cups of coffee. But he also talked about how our Carolina experience would stay with us forever. "Chapel Hill is more than just a place," he said, "it is a state of mind." Powell Secretary Chairman Department of the Treasury Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System 1500 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW 20th Street and Constitution Ave NW Washington, D.C. 20220 Washington, DC 20551 Dear Secretary Mnuchin and Chairman Powell: The American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA), Asian American Hotel Owners Association (AAHOA) and hoteliers across the country thank you for your continued leadership during the coronavirus pandemic. At its core, the hotel industry is an industry of people taking care of people and our single greatest asset is our workforce. The health and safety of our associates and our guests has been and continues to be the top priority for the hotel industry. The historic CARES Act created by Congress and the Administration is a shining example of bi-partisan leadership to address one of the greatest challenges our nation has faced. It is also playing a vital role preventing significant and long-lasting economic damage for millions of Americans that work in the hotel industry. Our organizations and hoteliers across the country were also very pleased by the recent announcement of the expansion of the Term Asset-Backed Securities Loan Facility (TALF) to include triple-A-rated commercial mortgage-backed securities (CMBS). Furthermore, we are pleased to see the launch of the new “Main Street” lending facility to further solidify the Trump Administration and Congress’ efforts to bolster the American economy. AHLA represents all segments of the hotel industry in the United States, which encompasses over 55,000 properties nationwide, 61% of which are small businesses, and supports 1 in 25 American jobs.
