SKATE & Diving Club TOMSK STATE UNIVERSITY

Finswimming and Diving Club “SKATE” (in zoology) (Russian translation of stingray) was founded in 1959 at Tomsk State University by students V.Zhdanov, V.Titov and some others. Initially two principal directions of underwater activities were developed: Finswimming and Underwater Activities. In the field of finswimming members of the club achieved world recognition and demonstrated prominent results at numerous competitions of different level. Many finswimmers of the Club as members of Russian national team were among the winners at 37 World and European championships. The SKATE Club is proud to comprise as its members 20 World champions, 22 Еuropean champions, 25 holders of World and Еuropean records. The Club finswimming team for long years used to be the winner of the Cup of national competitions, and at 1998-2005 has won Еuropean finswimming clubs championships (C.M.A.S. Trophy) 7 times. World and Еuropean champions I.Avdeeva, N.Dyachkina, I.Egorushkina, M.Maximov, M.Kupressova, Р.Kulakov, S.Deduh and A.Ber hold the highest for Russia title “honored master of sport”. As members of the Club at different periods in competitions participated students of Tomsk State University “honored masters of ” S.Ahapov, E.Scorjenko, T.Komarova and several more, who got their initial training at other sport organizations. For long years the Club finswimming team was coached by A.Tyrin, A.Shumkov, P.Timchenko, who were also rewarded by official title “honored trainer of Russia”. More than 150 expeditions were organized and conducted by members of the club. For 20 years they participated in expeditions to Posyet Bay of Japan Sea. There were some diving expeditions on Baikal . The club was requested to investigate and to make photographs of damaged parts of the underwater oil pipeline across Ob River in Siberia. “Turanskaya Pisanitsa” (unique world famous ancient rock paintings hidden underwater) was found and photographed at the bottom of Krasnoyarsk water basin. The club members examined sunken settlement on the Lake Issyk Kul. A number of ships destroyed and sunken during the World War II and now lying deep on the bed of Black Sea have been explored a number of years by joint expeditions with Nikolaev city club “Sadko”. Several ship guns were lifted and exhibited at museums of the cities Sevastopol, Ochakov, and Nikolaev. Exploring the ruins of an aircraft shot down at the time of the war, the swimmers had found a handgun and a pilot’s order which later were used to identify pilot’s name. Weapons and soldiers’ personal belongings were lifted from the deep of the lake at Murmansk region and from the Lake Khasan at Primorsky Kray by participants of the club expeditions. This stuff was presented to local museums. Members of the club ventured the waters of all seas and oceans of the Earth. The expedition supervised by V.Suslaev, D.Vershinin, D.Gorn and some others. These unique results have been achieved due to elaboration of new training methods and development of high quality sport equipment, special fitness hall, altitude test facility, pool, deepwater , chamber, compressor house, classroom, club museum, library and due to creation of motivational system for achievement of highest results. The greatest success was achieved in design of underwater equipment such as masks, tubes, long fins and fins with glass-fiber fan. It’s verified by patents and sport achievements. In 1999 and 2007 Confederation for Underwater Activities of Russia (CRASA) estimated and praised Finswimming & Diving Club SKATE as the best Russian diving club. We believe that we have done a lot for developing of the underwater sports in both Russia and world, always supporting CMAS ideas with pleasure. Exactly 50 years ago, in London, we have met with Nikola Flemming and for many years we were in business correspondence. We are proud to be visited by CMAS directors: Karll-Heinz Kerll – 1989, Achille Ferrero – 1991, Eve Normann – 1993, Valentine Stachevsky and Manuel Martin-Bueno – 1999, Michel Gaunard – 2010.
