CANADIAN TELEVISION 2015 A GUIDE TO CURRENT PRODUCTION Prepared for Michael Hennessy, President & CEO Canadian Media Production Association (CMPA) Curated by Bill Brioux CANADIAN TELEVISION 2015 1 A GUIDE TO CURRENT PRODUCTION CANADIAN TV ENTERS A GOLDEN AGE For the last 30 years, in my time reporting on it, television in Canada has undergone many changes. The one constant, however, has been the nagging impression that Canadian television is somehow inferior to the US brand. This notion has only intensified in recent years, in what some call the new “Golden Age” of TV drama. So, as many have been asking, where is Canada’s Golden Age? Well, you’ll find it in the pages of this book. Not everything that comes out of Canada is the quality of The Sopranos or Mad Men or Breaking Bad. Then again, few shows from America can come close to Bill Brioux these classics. The fact is Fargo, the most-nominated TV series at the 2014 Emmy Awards, is produced in the province of Alberta. Yes, the producers and many of the stars are Americans, but you should hear them gush about Canadian crews. Billy Bob Thornton, for one, is a fan. “One night, it went down to 40 below and they wouldn’t allow us to work,” he told me of working near Calgary on Fargo. “You figure if a Canadian says it’s too dangerous to go out there, it probably is too dangerous to go out.” FX Networks, considered the top non-premium US cable brand and a rival to HBO overall, invested The fact is television $100 million in Canada during the past TV season.

  • GREEN IS the COLOUR Brad Wall, Political Despair, and the Affective Politics of the “Rider Nation”
GREEN IS THE COLOUR Brad Wall, Political Despair, and the Affective Politics of the “Rider Nation” Justin Leifso PhD Candidate University of Alberta Presented at the Canadian Political Science Association Annual Conference Toronto, Ontario June 1, 2017 CONFERENCE WORKING DRAFT: Please do not cite without author’s permission 1 INTRODUCTION In 2016, the conservative1 Saskatchewan Party and its two-term premier Brad Wall won a third consecutive majority government in Saskatchewan. Despite a waning economic outlook and a series of scandals including the discovery of a questionable land deal, Wall’s party improved on their previous electoral performances, winning their largest majority in the legislature and their largest share of the popular vote, and defeating the NDP’s leader in his own riding. It was, by any measure, an extraordinary victory for a party that had already won two impressive legislative majorities in 2007 and 2011. Wall’s popularity, however, was nothing new. For much of Wall’s reign as premier, he has remained Canada’s most popular, fuelling speculation about possible federal aspirations (Maclean’s 2016). As the Conservative Party of Canada seeks to re- establish itself after its 2016 defeat and resignation of former Prime Minister Stephen Harper, Wall’s popularity has made him a de facto leader of the country’s conservative movement, regularly sparring with centre-left leaders such as Prime Minister Trudeau and Alberta Premier Notley as he takes up conservative causes such as resisting carbon levies and calling for “caution” with respect to Canada’s acceptance of Syrian refugees. In this paper, I argue that Wall’s popularity is inextricably tied to Saskatchewan’s history of political despair.

WRITTEN DIRECT TESTIMONY OF JANICE DE FREITAS (CBC - RIGHTS ADMINISTRATION) 2004—2005 Cable Royalty Distribution Proceeding Docket No. 2007-03 CRB CD 2004-2005 1. Introduction I am Manager of Rights Administration for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation/Radio-Canada (CBC/Radio-Canada) at the Head Office in Ottawa. I have worked for the CBC since 1980. For the last 15 years, I have served as Chairman of the Canadian Claimants Group (CCG). Before assuming my current position, I spent nine years in CBC’s television program distribution department eventually managing the Educational Sales unit. Those responsibilities called for me to be familiar with the English television network’s programming, and rights administration. CBC/Radio-Canada is Canada’s national public broadcaster, and one of its largest and most important cultural institutions. It was created by an Act of Parliament in 1936, beginning with Radio. Bilingual television services were launched in 1952. CBC/Radio-Canada is licensed and regulated by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC)1. CBC/Radio-Canada employs approximately 9,930 Canadians in 27 regional offices across the country. CBC programming is provided on multiple platforms: television (both traditional over-the-air and cable networks), radio, the Internet, satellite radio, digital audio and a recording label. Through this array of activities, CBC/Radio-Canada delivers content in English, French, and eight aboriginal languages. In addition to this, programming is available in seven other languages including Spanish, Russian and Mandarin on both Radio Canada International, and Web-based www.rciviva.ca, a radio service for recent and aspiring immigrants to Canada.
