CRONKRITE 1 0 2 The Pilots and Hoosiers then engaged in a highly tactical yet entertaining 87 minutes of soccer, with play ranging from endline to endline. UP CAREER GOALKEEPING Indiana outshot Portland 9-5 in the contest, but had its only serious scoring threat Player Min. Spiteri made four saves in the contest. Freshman midfielder Darrin Domingo was Outstanding Defensive Player of the tournament for his efforts in preserving Portland’s first shutout of the season. PORTLAND 4, WILLIAM & MARY 1: Just 9:56 into the match, Portland freshman Josh Simpson ran onto a long leading pass from senior defender Isaac Vanderburg which got behind the Tribe defense, then beat the rushing keeper with a header to the 2001 WCC far post. The goal was Simpson’s first as a Pilot, while Vanderburg collected his first MEN’S SOCCER career assist. Portland then went up 2-0 on the first of two Nate Jaqua goals. STANDINGS Kelly Gray’s shot was blocked by a W&M defender, but Jaqua pounced on the ball and fired a rocket past the Tribe defense at 28:05. The Tribe closed within 2-1 at 59:40 WCC OVERALL when Ralph Bean gathered in a loose ball outside the box, beat the Pilot defense and STANDINGS W- L- T W- L- T slotted a low shot under Portland keeper Curtis Spiteri. San Diego 0-0-0 3-0-0 Less than eight minutes later, a Pilot set piece resulted in Jaqua’s second goal. Kelly San Francisco 0-0-0 3-1-0 PORTLAND 0-0-0 2-2-0 Gray sent a free kick to Jarrod Weis, who had snuck behind the Tribe wall. Weis fired a Santa Clara 0-0-0 2-2-0 tough angle shot which was blocked, but Jaqua was alone in front of an empty net to Gonzaga 0-0-0 1-2-0 pound home the rebound. Saint Mary’s 0-0-0 2-2-0 Loyola Marymount 0-0-0 1-3-0 Portland completed the scoring at 70:10 when Weis sent a beautiful through ball to Eric Cronkrite, who beat the keeper with a dribble and knocked the ball home. 2001 WCC MEN’S STATISTICS The Pilots outshot William & Mary just 18-14, but Spiteri was forced to make just TEAM three saves.     Jimmy Conway - a local Soccer Legend In late 2009 local soccer legend, Jimmy Conway, was diagnosed with ‘Trauma Induced Dementia’. Since that time the local soccer community has come together once a year to recognize and celebrate Jimmy’s contribution to the game of soccer. Jimmy was born in Dublin, Ireland and went on to play for the famous ‘Stella Maris F.C.’ and became a youth international player for the Republic of Ireland. He progressed up the football ranks and signed as an amateur with ‘Bohemians FC’ before signing for Fulham F.C. prior to the 1966 season. Over a 12-year period he played 316 league and 44 ‘cup' games for Fulham and scored 67 league and 9 ‘cup’ goals during that period. While at Fulham he played as a losing finalist against West Ham United at the famed Wembley stadium, in front of 100,000 fans in the 1975 F.A. Cup Final. Jimmy was ‘capped’ 20 times for the Republic of Ireland and played alongside some of Ireland’s greatest ever players e.g. Johnny Giles. Conway was transferred to the Portland Timbers in 1978 and played 61 matches scoring 7 goals and 14 assists during that period. In 1979 Conway was named Timbers captain. He was appointed assistant coach/ captain in 1980 and went on to work as an assistant coach during two periods at the club 1978-80 and 2001-05. Conway received his USSF (US Soccer) ‘A’ license in January 1991 and was appointed a member of the USSF National Coaching Staff in 1994.
