PORTLAND 4, WILLIAM & MARY 1: Just 9:56 into the match, Portland freshman Josh Simpson ran onto a long leading pass from senior defender Isaac Vanderburg which got behind the Tribe defense, then beat the rushing keeper with a header to the 2001 WCC far post. The goal was Simpson’s first as a Pilot, while Vanderburg collected his first MEN’S SOCCER career assist. Portland then went up 2-0 on the first of two Nate Jaqua goals. STANDINGS ’s shot was blocked by a W&M defender, but Jaqua pounced on the ball and fired a rocket past the Tribe defense at 28:05. AND THE LAST TIME . . .: Portland’s 4-1 win over Washington avoided the program’s first potential losing season since 1982. Prior to this year, Portland has had just two losing records - 11-12-2 in 1978, and 8-9-3 in 1982. Portland hasn’t lost four straight games since 1994. The last time Portland gave up at least six goals in two games was also in 1997, when the Pilots lost 4-3 at Seattle Pacific, followed by a 4-2 win against Saint Mary’s.
