The cable, along with a converter (adapter), was used to connect a 3Com PalmPilot™ to a Johnson Controls CablePRO. As a replacement for the modem cable and the DB9 Male to DB25 Female converter, you must order three new parts to connect to the CablePRO (see Table 1 below). These parts, which can be ordered from the Johnson Controls ITAS group, will operate with the Palm II™, Palm IIIe™, Palm IIIx™, Palm V™, PalmPilot Personal, and PalmPilot Professional. Please refer to the following revised procedure on the next page Making Cable Connections to the PalmPilot to connect the new parts. 7DVN:HE Hypertext for PDAs 3URJUDPPLQJ 6\VWHPV /DE &ROXPELD 8QLYHUVLW\ Introduction TaskWeb is a hypertext system designed particularly for small devices, especially Personal Digital Assis- tants (PDA’s). Much of the data on a device like 3Com’s popular Palm series and the Windows CE-based units is interrelated. But until now, there has been no mechanism for maintaining direct links connecting these pieces of information. TaskWeb enables the user to create and traverse n-ary links among records managed by the PDA’s conventional applications. TaskWeb makes handhelds more useful by incorporating the power of hypertext. System Description TaskWeb consists of two main components: the TaskWeb database and maintenance system (“TaskWeb Maintenance Utility”), and the TaskWeb linking utility (“TaskWeb Link Manager”). The former main- tains the actual anchors and links, while the latter provides an interface to the user so that they can traverse links seamlessly. Tasks are first created through the maintenance application. Once this is done, anchor creation is accomplished by associating an anchor with a particular link through the linking utility. Multiple anchors can be associated with multiple links, allowing for a many-to-many relationship between links and tasks. Performance Ritual and the Design of Mobile Devices
Performance ritual and the design of mobile devices Submitted by Kym R. Campbell th 30 May 2016 Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Canberra, Australian Capital Territory, Australia Abstract This thesis argues that concepts of secular ritual, drawn from the work of Erving Goffman and James Carey, can provide a useful way of understanding the relationship between the production and design of mobile devices and their use, and hence provides further insights into the broader relationship between mobile technologies and society. This argument is developed by reviewing scholarship on the relationship between technologies and society, before engaging with ritual as a secular concept and a way of understanding human relations with technology. James Carey's work on ritual and communication is key to linking technology with ritual, while Erving Goffman's work on ritual and performance provides a way to develop a framework for further analysis. The ritual performance-oriented framework is described here as the theatre of design, and acts as a metaphor for describing the dynamic between society and the mobile device. In essence, this approach argues that we can understand our relationship with mobile devices as a performance in which the device can be a prop, users can be thought of as actors, and designers take on the role of director. To develop this framework further, the device is examined through a sociocultural lens. Du Gay et al’s circuit of culture is utilised to illustrate how meaning comes to associate with the technology.

It is July 30, 2007. Start by giving us an overview of where you grew up and how your childhood might have influenced your ultimate career choices. I know certainly you got some of your creativity from your father for example but your childhood reminiscences. Jeff Hawkins: Sure. I grew up in Greenlawn, New York. That is on the north shore of Long Island. I was born in 1957, and I have two brothers and a father. We’re all sort of engineering types of people so there was my mother and four men that sort of dominated and set the tone for the house. My father was what you might call a consummate inventor mostly in the marine world and the marine trades. We had boats and boating things and we had more shop space in our house than we had living space. So our garage was better equipped than our living house and I was brought up in an environment where we were constantly building things, very unusual boats, strange types of nautical things, lots of foam and fiberglass and wood and metal machines and so on. So that’s the environment I was brought up in. I learned a lot of mechanical trades and skills in my youth and I also was exposed to a lot of crazy things most of which didn’t work but still were interesting.
