Mellor, Chair This dissertation investigates the cultural imagination of Roman elites regarding poverty in their society – how it was defined, how traditional and accepted images of poverty were deployed for rhetorical effect, and in what way elite attitudes toward poverty evolved over the course of the first century and a half under the Empire. It contends that the Roman conception of poverty was as a disordered discourse involving multiple competing definitions which frequently overlapped in practice. It argues that the inherent contradictions in Roman thought about poverty were rarely addressed or acknowledged by authors during this period. The Introduction summarizes scholarly approaches toward Roman perceptions of poverty and offers a set of definitions which describe the variant images of poverty in elite texts. The first chapter addresses poverty’s role in the histories of Livy, and the ways in which his presentation of poverty diverge from his assertion that the loss of paupertas was key to the decline of the Roman state. -

We smell it, we smell it, we smell it in the air, the Güllen air.” [Wir sind in Güllen. Wir riechen’s, wir riechen’s, wir riechen’s an der Luft, an der Güllener Luft]. Friedrich Dürrenmatt, The Visit Switzerland, in the minds of foreigners, triggers a variety of stereotypes that tend to fall into a fairly narrow range of topics: how beautiful the country is, how neat and clean – often followed by some comment about the Swiss banks, the universally known export products of chocolate, cheese, and watches and, when talking to men, a remark or a question about the army or at least its famous knife.1 When visiting the country, especially as a tourist, one can find these things fully in evidence and, wherever applicable, commercialized and ready for sale. Switzerland is a country quite in tune with the stereotypes that circulate about it. For those who know the country better, it presents itself in many more facets and appears, despite its small size and generally low international news profile, as a rather 1 intriguing place. In spite of its air of general quiet and reputation for stability, it has over the past twenty years or so, in tandem with broader European developments, changed significantly. Most of these changes can be understood as the country’s way of adjusting to the new Europe of the post-Cold War age. -

We know that our resources are limited and that we have to be particularly sparing in the use of energy. Water threatens to become scarce in some parts of the world. The fear that wars may break out among peoples over water is not unrealistic. Nisbet’s analysis (‘Felicitas at Surrentum’, JRS 68 [1978] 1-11 = Collected Papers on Latin Literature, Oxford 1995, 29-46): “Here the forlorn lover’s address to the heavenly bodies is made an occasion for point rather than feeling. When the fiery stars are received in the gulf of Ocean, there is not only an antithesis between fire and water but an implicit contrast with the less welcoming κόλπος of the poet’s beloved. Ariste is called a witch not simply for her bewitching qualities (Gow-Page) but because she has worked a disappearing trick, not on the moon (as witches often do) but on herself. Then with a characteristically cynical climax the poet promises to send his silver sleuth-hounds after her: ἀργυρέους is a parody of ἀργούς, the Homeric epithet for dogs, and balances the golden horn in the first line (the moon, like the stars, is better off than the poet).
