The CIBA of Toronto began under the direction of a small group of Italian-Canadian businessmen and professionals, who included Anthony Andreoli, Sam Benedetto, Joseph D. Carrier, John de Toro, Remo de Carli, Eugenio Faludi, Neldo Lorenzetti, William Morrassutti, Vincent Paul, Sam Sorbara and Suilio Venchiarruti, who was the association's first president. Formed in response to the difficulties facing the large numbers of Italian Canadians in Toronto after World War II, the not-for-profit association assisted with the integration of new immigrants into Canadian society and raised funds for different causes. Throughout the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s, the CIBPA Toronto supported the formation and/or development of a number of charitable organizations, including the Italian Immigrant Aid Society (IIAS), the Centro Organizzativo Scuole Tecniche Italiane (COSTI), the Federazione di Associazioni e Club Italiani (FACI), the Italian Canadian Benevolent Corporation (ICBC), the Columbus Centre and the Villa Colombo Home for the Aged, as well as other charitable initiatives. In addition to its fundraising and charitable endeavours, as membership in the CIBPA Toronto grew, the association held monthly dinner meetings, business and professional networking events, and other special events with the aim of promoting business and social interaction between its members and with the wider community, which is the primary focus of the modern CIBPA Toronto. The CIBPA Toronto is governed by a constitution and by-laws, which detail the association's objectives to "initiate and foster programs and activities for the welfare and betterment of the Italian and Canadian Italian communities, to promote and strengthen the image of the Canadian Italian community within Toronto and Canada, and to initiate and foster social and cultural interest and activities among its members and the Canadian Italian community." The CIBPA Toronto is managed by an elected board of directors comprised of an immediate past president, president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer and Ladies' Auxiliary representative. The board of directors oversees a number of permanent committees, including executive, legal, membership and nominating committees, and other rotating committees. CIBPA Toronto membership includes categories for full, youth, student, life, honorary and corporate members. In 1983, the CIBPA Toronto joined CIBPA Montreal to form the National Federation of Canadian Italian Business and Professional Associations, which now includes chapters in Hamilton, Niagara, Halifax, Ottawa, Sudbury, Sault Ste. Marie, Thunder Bay, Windsor, Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary, Windsor and Vancouver. ANGELO PRINCIPE CENTRING THE PERIPHERY. PRELIMINARY NOTES ON THE ITALLVN CANADL\N PRESS: 1950-1990 The Radical Press From the end of the Second World War to the 1980s, eleven Italian Canadian radical periodicals were published: seven left-wing and four right- wing, all but one in Toronto.' The left-wing publications were: II lavoratore (the Worker), La parola (the Word), La carota (the Carrot), Forze nuove (New Forces), Avanti! Canada (Forward! Canada), Lotta unitaria (United Struggle), and Nuovo mondo (New World). The right-wing newspapers were: Rivolta ideale (Ideal Revolt), Tradizione (Tradition), // faro (the Lighthouse or Beacon), and Occidente (the West or Western civilization). Reading these newspapers today, one gets the impression that they were written in a remote era. The socio-political reality that generated these publications has been radically altered on both sides of the ocean. As a con- sequence of the recent disintegration of the communist system, which ended over seventy years of East/West confrontational tension, in Italy the party system to which these newspapers refer no longer exists. Parties bear- ing new names and advancing new policies have replaced the older ones, marking what is now considered the passage from the first to the second Republic- As a result, the articles on, or about, Italian politics published ^ I would like to thank several people who helped in different ways with this paper. • Good Friday on College Street: Urban Space and Changing Italian Identity
GOOD FRIDAY ON COLLEGE STREET: URBAN SPACE AND CHANGING ITALIAN IDENTITY M. VIENNA PAOLANTONIO A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN HISTORY YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO September 2020 © M. Vienna Paolantonio, 2020 Abstract This dissertation examines the relationship between urban space and minority ethnic identity. It makes extensive use of oral testimony and a variety of archival documents including personal correspondence and photographs, parish records, and newspaper records to reveal the way postwar Italian immigrants utilized traditional religious practices to nurture and express a feeling of belonging in the Toronto neighbourhood known as Little Italy. The Processione di Cristo Morto (The Procession of the Dead Christ or PCM) on Good Friday was part of a larger approach to religious devotion which included public processions for patron saints embedded in the premigration lives of southern Italian immigrants who settled in the College Street neighbourhood. Immigrants brought with them the assumption that public space was an appropriate location for nurturing and expanding dense networks of information and support connected to leisure activity and devotional practices. Although use of neighbourhood space for leisure appears to be a gendered practice among Italian immigrants, during the PCM women occupied and directed the use of public space on a scale equal to men. I argue the PCM was unique in terms of its appeal to Italian immigrants from all regions of Italy and became an important symbolic vehicle for publicly expressing the evolution of personal and communal Italian identity from Italian “immigrant” to Italian-Canadian “ethnic” over two generations.
