Sir Jack Brabham passed away on the 19th May. Much has been written about Sir Jack, and many of us in M and O racing and its equivalent throughout the world have had the honour of meeting this incredible driver who got into the sport through his love of tinkering with cars. From the Speedway in Sydney to the world stage of Formula One, Sir Jack was as good as any driver of his era as any and over a long period of time. One should wonder how often we did see the true talent that was Jack Brabham, for as someone who understood the car he was driving better than anyone, Jack drove the car within its limits, and not Jack’s limits, winning by the smallest margin and if knowingly unable to improve a position, then driving to maintain that position, always looking after the car. Jack’s first Championship win was in 1959 in a Cooper. For 1960 came a modified Cooper, called the Lowline, modified after consulting a mate in Sydney, Ron Tauranac, who drew up changes to the car to lower the engine, redesigned the suspension to improve the handling and reduce the frontal area.
