Cartier went on two expeditions up the St. Lawrence, one in 1534 and the second in 1541. After the expedi- 24 20 tions, it was decided that the winters were too harsh and further exploration upriver Contact Station 25 would have been difficult because of the rapids. Therefore, the French did not show 19 interest in the new land for more than half a century. 27 18 In more recent history, the property known as Jacques Cartier State Park was 26 owned by the Chapman family. The land was later purchased by James Olds who built 28 17 a grist mill that furnished power for grinding grain for the farmers living along the river. 29 Later the land was sold to John De Lack and the point of land was called De Lack Point. 16 Subsequently the land was bought by the Boy Scouts of America and became known as 1 Camp Vigor. 2 The Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation purchased the park in 15 1957, opening it to the public in 1959. 14 3 13
