Come (Seated) Call to Worship Leader: This is the day the Lord has made; People: let us rejoice and be glad in it. (A time of reflection and meditation) Prelude Youth Choir: Sing glad hosannas to welcome the King of kings. Sing glad hosannas, rejoice, let your praises ring! Blessed is he who comes this day, who comes in the name of the Lord. Blessed is he who comes this day, his glory shall be restored. Hosanna, hosanna, exalt him forever more. This is the day of triumph and praise. This is the day we rejoice. Sing glad hosannas…..Rejoice, let your praises ring! Greeting Leader: Today we join Jesus in his final week of earthly ministry, from his triumphal entry to the last supper, crucifixion, and resurrection. The journey begins as Jesus enters Jerusalem. The Gospel of Matthew tells us Jesus’ disciples brought a donkey and a colt, and put their cloaks on them, and he sat on them. A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and that followed were shouting, People: “Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord!” 2 (Please stand if able) Processional Hymns People sing: “All Glory, Laud and Honor” Psalter Hymnal 376 3 (Please be seated) Confession and Assurance Leader: Then Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who were selling and buying in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. -

Materials in the collection include photographs (both color and black and white), postcards, advertising materials, and other visual art from the late 19th--early 21st centuries. Most images are American or European in origin, showcasing themes of antiquity, mythology, and literature. The film stills range from the early silent era to more modern Hollywood blockbusters, but also include televised movies and series. In addition to marketing images by studios, the collection also consists of rare behind the scenes images from film sets and creative departments. The stage works exhibited include theater, ballet, and opera. Materials from this previously private collection have been curated and displayed at institutions such as the Tate Modern, Emory University, and the University of Oxford. TEXT AND CONTEXT: “THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST” Peter Gilmour “We adore thee O Christ and we bless thee because by Thy Holy Cross Thou Hast Redeemed the World.” So began the prayers at each Station of the Cross in the pre-Vatican II era of the Roman Catholic Church. The priest vested in a cope, with acolyte on either side of him, processed to each of the fourteen stations which hung on the perimeter walls of the church, and led the prayers. It was one of the few pre Vatican II rituals conducted in the vernacular, and the active participation of the people in the pews, a rarity back then, was an essential part of this ritual. This participatory ritual carried out in the vernacular was intimately connected to the celebration of the Eucharist, in pre Vatican II terminology, “the Mass.” The Mass was taught to be the “unbloody reinactment of the sacrifice on Calvary.” 1 This pre Vatican II Eucharistic theology linked the Stations of the Cross with the Mass in Catholic popular religious consciousness. The Stations of the Cross played a prominent part in the pre restoration of Holy Week Good Friday service popularly known as the “Tre Ore” service. They also were part of other communal devotions, e.g., novenas and parish missions. In addition to the communal Stations of the Cross, individuals could privately “say the stations” in church. It was not uncommon to see individuals in Catholic churches walking around to each Station and praying privately. The Stations of the Cross was an significant form of pre Vatican II piety in the Roman Catholic tradition. -

Einleitung Wie die Bilder sind auch die Filme ihrer Entstehungszeit vielfältig verpichtet; zugleich aber bringt der zeitliche Vorsprung der Kunstgeschichte gegenüber der Filmgeschichte es mit sich, dass Filmemacher sich an Kunstwerke wie an Vorlagen anlehnen konnten. Sie nehmen die vorhandenen Jesus-Motive wie den Guten Hirten, den jugendlichen Menschenfreund, den Leidenskönig oder den siegreichen Kämpfer auf und setzen ihn in Szene. So macht etwa Cecile B. DeMille für seine Kreuzweg- Inszenierung im Film „King of Kings“ von 1927 eine Anleihe bei den Holzschnitten des romantischen Künstlers Gustave Doré aus dem Jahr 1866. Neben den zeitgenössisch besonders beliebten Bibelbildern Dorés oder auch von Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld und J. James Tissot dienen den frühen Filmemachern die Gemälde alter Meister (z.B. Da Vincis „Abendmahl“ oder die „Kreuzigung“ von Velasquez) oder aber die frommen Gebrauchsbilder wie Andachts- und Fleiß- und Sterbebildchen als Vorbilder ihrer Gestaltung. Jedoch nicht die Bilder allein lehren den Film-Jesus das Laufen; Unterstützung kommt noch von einer anderen, längst etablierten Gattung, nämlich dem Jesus- Roman. Dessen Geschichte ähnelt wiederum der Geschichte der Bilder: Bis zum 18. Jahrhundert lehnen sich die literarischen Bearbeitungen der Figur → Jesus eng an die → Evangelien an. Dabei stehen die Weihnachts-, Passions- und Osterspiele im Vordergrund. Im Zusammenhang mit bibelkritischen Forschungen (z.B. → D.F. Strauss, Das Leben Jesu, 1835 / 1836) entstehen ab Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts freiere und säkularisierte Annäherungen an den Mann aus Nazareth. -

SAINT DAVID’S 2020 HOME LITURGY PACKET MAUNDY THURSDAY, GOOD FRIDAY & HOLY SATURDAY Dear ones, Before you begin, please read through the liturgies like a new recipe so that you have your space and heart ready for worship. If you have others with you, please share the readings and prayers. If you are sheltering on your own, know that we are all praying and worshiping together and, if you’d like, invite someone through FaceTime, Zoom or just by phone to join you in these liturgies. If you’d like to be connected to other parishioners for these liturgies let me (301- 787-4440) or Joel know and we will put you together with someone! As the triduum (Maundy Thursday through Easter) is considered one continuous service, there is no blessing or dismissal until we get to Easter Sunday, so at the end tonight’s, Friday’s and Saturday’s service you might simply wander off as the disciples did after Jesus’ betrayal, trial and crucifixion. If it feels awkward – you are doing it right. I pray that you set aside the time for these liturgies, friends, and let the solemnity, beauty and power of them guide you this year in what, I hope, will be a truly holy, Holy week! Christensen The controversy in 2004 over possible anti-Semitism in Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ had precedents in earlier Jesus-films.1 Pier Paolo Pasolini's The Gospel According to Matthew and Franco Zeffirelli's Jesus of Nazareth have also been accused of anti-Semitism.2 Carl Theodor Dreyer (1889-1968) wanted to combat anti-Semitism, as he directly stated in his own essays attached to his Jesus screenplay, which since his death has been published in English, Danish, and French versions. 3 Dreyer began the film project in 1949-1950 in Independence, Missouri, writing in English, and he worked on it until the end of his life.
