All participants completed both versions of the task (inclusion, exclusion) on separate visits, as well as measures of psychological need security, working memory, and social cognition. Following social exclusion, individuals with schizophrenia showed decreased psychological need security and working memory. Contrary to expectations, they showed an improved ability to detect lies on the social cognitive task. -

Humeidan 1 Copyright by Caroline Maria Sawicki 2020 2 ABstract Exposure to chronic stress disrupts the homeostatic communication pathways between the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral immune system, leading to dysregulated and heightened neuroinflammation that contributes to the pathophysiology of anxiety and pain. Repeated social defeat (RSD) is a murine model of psychosocial stress that recapitulates many of the behavioral and immunological effects observed in humans in response to stress, including activation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS) and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis. In both humans and rodents, the brain interprets physiological stress within fear and threat appraisal circuitry. RSD promotes the trafficking of bone marrow-derived inflammatory monocytes to the brain within discrete stress-responsive brain regions where neuronal and microglial activation are observed. Notably, RSD induces the expression of adhesion molecules on vascular endothelial cells within the same brain regions where microglial activation and monocyte trafficking occur in response to stress (Chapter 2). Further studies demonstrated that these monocytes express high levels of Interleukin (IL)-1β, activating brain endothelial IL-1 receptors to promote the onset of anxiety-like behavior. In addition to promoting anxiety, psychological stress increases susceptibility to experience pain and exacerbates existing pain. -

Identify main methodological challenges of research on the neural basis of social behavior in psychopathology and strategies for addressing these challenges. 3. Identify how research in the three social processes discussed in detail – social learning, self-regulation, and theory of mind – inform our understanding of psychopathology. Summary Points: 1. Several psychiatric disorders, such as schizophrenia and autism, are characterized by social functioning deficits, but there are few interventions that effectively address social problems. 2. Treatment development is hindered by research challenges that limit knowledge about the neural systems that support social behavior, how those neural systems and associated social behaviors are compromised in psychopathology, and how the social environment influences neural function, social behavior, and symptoms of psychopathology. 3. These research challenges can be addressed by tailoring experimental design to optimize sensitivity of both neural and social measures as well as reduce confounds associated with psychopathology. 4. Investigations on the neural mechanisms of social learning, self-regulation, and Theory of Mind provide examples of methodological approaches that can inform our understanding of psychopathology. 5. The paucity in available animal models for investigating the role of sleep in the etiopathogenesis of depression-like behaviors led us to investigate whether prior sleep disturbances can predict susceptibility to future stress. Hence, we assessed sleep before and after chronic social defeat (CSD) stress. The social behavior of the mice post stress was classified in two main phenotypes: mice susceptible to stress that displayed social avoidance and mice resilient to stress. Pre-CSD, mice susceptible to stress displayed increased fragmentation of Non-Rapid Eye Movement (NREM) sleep, due to increased switching between NREM and wake and shorter average duration of NREM bouts, relative to mice resilient to stress. Logistic regression analysis showed that the pre-CSD sleep features from both phenotypes were separable Edited by: enough to allow prediction of susceptibility to stress with >80% accuracy. In rodents, many stress susceptibility and resilience studies have focused on males as one commonly used paradigm—chronic social defeat stress—has proven challenging to implement in females. We report a new version of the social defeat paradigm that works in female mice. By applying male odorants to females to increase resident male aggressive behavior, we find that female mice undergo repeated social defeat stress and develop social avoidance, decreased sucrose preference, and decreased time in the open arms of the elevated plus maze relative to control mice. Moreover, a subset of the female mice in this paradigm display resilience, maintaining control levels of social exploration and sucrose preference. -

Bagalkot5 and Young‑Chul Chung1,2* Abstract Background: Chronic social defeat stress induces depression and anxiety-like behaviors in rodents and also responsi‑ ble for diferentiating defeated animals into stress susceptible and resilient groups. The present study investigated the efects of social defeat stress on a variety of behavioral parameters like social behavior, spatial learning and memory and anxiety like behaviors. Additionally, the levels of various dopaminergic markers, including the long and short form of the D2 receptor, and total and phosphorylated dopamine and cyclic adenosine 3′,5′-monophosphate regulated phosphoprotein-32, and proteins involved in intracellular trafcking were assessed in several key brain regions in young adult mice. Methods: Mouse model of chronic social defeat was established by resident-intruder paradigm, and to evaluate the efect of chronic social defeat, mice were subjected to behavioral tests like spontaneous locomotor activity, elevated plus maze (EPM), social interaction and Morris water maze tests. Results: Mice were divided into susceptible and unsusceptible groups after 10 days of social defeat stress. The sus‑ ceptible group exhibited greater decreases in time spent in the open and closed arms compared to the control group on the EPM. In the social interaction test, the susceptible group showed greater increases in submissive and neutral behaviors and greater decreases in social behaviors relative to baseline compared to the control group. -

Lorentz, RN, MSN Stress is a fundamental component of life. It is an unconscious response to a demand and when the demand is perceived as excessive, stress results along with diseases and conditions. Psychoneuroimmunology (PNI) has given importance to the relationship between stress and its physiological effects on the body. Scientists in this growing field have discovered that stress modulates the activities of the nervous, endocrine, and immune systems. Mind-body medicine is developing unconventional methods for coping with stress-related disorders. Nurses are empowered to implement mind-body interventions, such as meditation, imagery, therapeutic touch, and humor, to reduce stress and promote self-control and positive well-being for their patients. To ensure meeting the needs of the entire individual, mind, body and spirit, holistic nurses promote the concept of the mind-body connection. Their practice is based on a holistic view of the patient as they help patients manage their illness; how to think about it, cope with it and respond to it. Holistic approaches in health care hold promise for positive outcomes when the mind-body model is embraced. The concept of mind- body connection may be first attributed to Florence Nightingale who wrote in her Notes on Nursing in 1862 about the healing power of sensory stimulation and personal connection. A new discipline evolved from this type of thinking and is referred to as psychoneuroimmunology (PNI). The growing field of psychoneuroimmunology was established by scientists who were interested in gaining a better understanding of the interrelationship between the mind and body.
