Os meios de comunicação ao acompanharem a par e passo a realidade social, contribuíram de forma acérrima para o desenvolvimento desta especialização jornalística, dado o protagonismo conferido. O sucessivo destaque editorial é matéria de análise, uma vez que o Desporto envolve inúmeras práticas, no entanto o realce parece estar sempre confinado a uma única modalidade: o futebol. Aquele que é considerado o desporto rei aparenta assaltar as capas e os conteúdos noticiosos desportivos, relegando as demais modalidades existentes para segundo plano.
