  • The Spiderwick Chronicles
The Spiderwick Chronicles Author Program In-depth Interview Insights Beyond the Movie The Spiderwick Chronicles creators Holly Black and Tony DiTerlizzi, interviewed in their studios in Amherst, MA on October 29, 2004. TEACHINGBOOKS: The Spiderwick Chronicles are extremely popular, and they have created quite a following among readers — how do you account for this, given the relatively dark nature of the material? TONY DITERLIZZI: I think any good faerie tale, probably the most well-loved and well-known faerie tales, are extremely dark. I think that’s what makes them so good. Holly and I really strived hard to imbue that sense of darkness into The Spiderwick Chronicles. The faeries and the faerie folk in Spiderwick are true to real folklore. They’re not Tinkerbell-type characters. They act as the faeries in folklore do. The ogre is not a cartoon. He’s a real ogre. As storytellers, our responsibility was not to terrify, but to communicate the sense of impending danger that these kids felt, and to make readers question if the characters were going to get out of danger. After all, we’re talking about two nine-year-olds and a 13-year-old, and they’re facing very real challenges. But so did Hansel and Gretel. So did the kids in Peter PanFor example, in the original text Wendy is shot with an arrow when they fly into Neverland. But that’s what we love…that’s the stuff. You want to be thinking, “Oh my God, they are not going to make it out of this.” In great stories — from comic books to kid’s books to movies — there’s always that sense of “there is no way they’re going to get out of this mess.” And that’s what we tried to do with Spiderwick.

Alastair brought the car to a stop and they piled out along with Havoc, who ran along the edge of the grass, barking. Alastair glanced at Call once before locking the car — there was no suitcase to carry out, no duffel bags or luggage to worry about. Call had come home from Master Joseph’s with nothing. Not exactly nothing, said Aaron’s voice in his head. You’ve got me. Call tried not to smile. It would be weird if his dad saw him grinning at nothing, especially since lately there hadn’t been much to smile about — Master Joseph and his forces had been defeated by the Magisterium, but there had been a high death toll. Call’s best friend, Aaron, had been raised from the dead only to die again. As far as anyone knew. “Are you all right?” Alastair squinted at Call. “You look dyspeptic.” Call abandoned the attempt not to smile. “Just glad to be home.” Alastair hugged him awkwardly. “I don’t blame you.” The house looked smaller inside, too. Call went into his bedroom, Havoc panting at his heels. It was still weird to see Havoc with regular green wolf eyes instead of the coruscating eyes of the Chaos-ridden.

They are the reason why heroes and heroines struggle to fight against, but at the same time they balance the whole realm, existing side by side with the heroes. There have been numerous children stories which depict the monsters as the villains, but they have rarely done so in portraying monsters as the wronged ones. In Holly Black’s Valiant (2005), the troll character named Ravus is presented as an outcast, a banished figure from his folk because of a misjudged rumor in his former kingdom. Unlike others who constantly challenge and trap humans, Ravus becomes a scholar who loves to explore his alchemy.

  • A Reader's Guide
A Reader’s Guide Sarah Whitten Brock-Servais ENGL 380 November 20, 2016 About the Author: Holly Black Born and raised in New Jersey, Holly Black became the author of some of the bestselling contemporary fantasy novels for children and teens. She has received multiple awards including, the Andre Norton Award, the Mythopoeic Award, and a Newberry Honor for Doll Bones. She was also a finalist for the Eisner Award. Q & A (from an interview on her website http://blackholly.com/about/) What happens after Doll Bones? Doll Bones is meant to be open ended. Not all the questions are answered, so readers can use their imagination if they want to. Feel free to speculate yourself— what do you think will happen? Was the ghost laid to rest? Was there ever a ghost at all? Will Poppy, Zach, and Alice stay friends? Will they keep playing some form of the game, and if so, as they grow up, how will the game change? Will there be a sequel to Doll Bones? Here’s a book where, although I love the characters, I don’t think I’d ever want to write about what happens next. I think it’s important that there not be a sequel, so that you get to decide both what you think happened in the book and what you think will happen next to the characters. How did you know you wanted to become a writer? Why did you choose to become a writer? I’ve always loved reading and I’ve always loved making up stories.
