World At War Guests are introduced to a time when the world was at war, and Hitler was hungry for domination. Front-page headlines (copies of real U.S. newspapers from that era) call out the milestones of the conflict: “Hitler Strikes Again,” “Fate of France in Hilter’s Hands,” “Japan Attacks Pearl Harbor.” Archival photos are dotted among the dramatic headlines. Historical film footage, narrated by veteran journalist and documentarian Bill Kurtis, details the events that led the United States into the fray of World War II. It is in this area that guests also see World at War— the first of four striking murals that help tell the story of the U-505, painted by renowned maritime artist Richard Moore. Battle of the Atlantic Through continuing film footage, guests learn about the use of German Unterseeboats, or U-boats, as a deadly tactic to keep necessary supplies from the Allies. A wall timeline emphasizes the extent of the U-boat’s threat. In 1942, the U-boats sank an incredible 1,150 Allied ships, sending thousands of men to their deaths and a staggering 7.8 million tons of vital war supplies to the bottom of the Atlantic. To illustrate this staggering statistic, guests observe a life-size representation of two Merchant Marines floating at sea, awaiting rescue, and their ship sinking from a U-boat’s torpedo. -

4th Quarter 2006 "Rest well, yet sleep lightly and hear the call, if again sounded, to provide firepower for freedom…” THE JERSEYMAN 2 THE JERSEYMAN The Place of the Battleship in America’s Arsenal: An Overview by Malcolm Muir, Jr., Virginia Military Institute The battleship made the United States a world military power. While it is true that abundant natural resources and an industrious population were preconditional for growing American might in the twentieth century, the country came to international prominence with the battleship as its principal weapon. Many Americans tend to forget how weak the Army was early in the twentieth century. With troops numbering barely 100,000, a typical ap- praisal came from the US attaché in Russia in 1912: “There is a universal belief that our army is not worthy of serious consideration.” The same remark could have been made only twenty years earlier about the U.S. Navy. In the decades after the Civil War, the fleet, composed of left-over monitors useful only for coastal defense and even older wooden warships with muzzle-loading cannon, was the object of derision. A British service journal wrote in 1875: “There never was such a hapless, broken- down, tattered, forlorn apology for a navy as that possessed by the United States.” This sad situation changed quickly and dramatically due largely to the work of two men: the theorist Alfred Thayer Mahan and his disciple Theodore Roosevelt. By convincing prominent Americans through his historical works that a strong battle fleet could ensure security, empire, and trade, Mahan spurred Congress to fund a respectable navy. -

The place is humming like a well-oiled machine. This is the season when the maintenance crew takes second stage to the tour guides. Five days a week, we run tours from 1000 to 1700. The Tour Guides have been showing up in force. We're doing a great business with summer day camps bringing several groups of campers through the ship each week. Operating from under the tent that Claire Oesterreich so generously donated to us, the gift shop crew generates an amazing amount of income considering the conditions that they have to work under. The lunch crowd has moved from the CPO mess to the picnic tables under the big tent where there is a fresh breeze. It's been a pleasant summer. A public apology was held at 1330 on 20 July 2001. With the tour guide crew at quarters on the pier, the Ship's Superintendent apologized to Al Vanderzee and Alan Fox for omitting their names on the tour guide list in the last Slater Signals. They both graciously accepted the apology with some comment about "where the sun don't shine." Certainly there will be more apologies to follow. The aft berthing space C-202L is really coming together. Our local Sea Cadet Unit lead by Chief Adrienne Daniels put forth a spectacular effort.
