Three months ago, I came home, unlocked my front door, and was surprised that the security system did not beep as usual. I entered my home cautiously and determined that no one was there. But the alarm was not on and the water was running full on from the kitchen tap. What happened? A burglar had managed to crawl in my kitchen window (which had been left unlocked after having some repairs done – my bad) and came into my home after having turned off the electricity from the back of my house in the hope that that would turn off any alarms. He then entered the house, but obviously came into the rooms that have motion sensors which sounded and scared him off. Why am I telling you about this? Because of my lessons learned. Always lock your windows and doors and be glad if you have an alarm system! There have been other such incidents reported in the Oaks over the past few months and it does seem as if there is an uptick in property crime. However, the fact remains that the Oaks neighorhood north of Franklin Avenue is one of the safest areas in Hollywood — or even all of Los Angeles. But despite having beautiful Griffi th Park right in our backyard, we do live in an urban area and unsavory elements are attracted to Hollywood. Some of them may target our homes. • Place Images of the American West in Western Films
PLACE IMAGES OF THE AMERICAN WEST IN WESTERN FILMS by TRAVIS W. SMITH B.S., Kansas State University, 2003 M.A., Kansas State University, 2005 AN ABSTRACT OF A DISSERTATION submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Department of Geography College of Arts and Sciences KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY Manhattan, Kansas 2016 Abstract Hollywood Westerns have informed popular images of the American West for well over a century. This study of cultural, cinematic, regional, and historical geography examines place imagery in the Western. Echoing Blake’s (1995) examination of the novels of Zane Grey, the research questions analyze one hundred major Westerns to identify (1) the spatial settings (where the plot of the Western transpires), (2) the temporal settings (what date[s] in history the Western takes place), and (3) the filming locations. The results of these three questions illuminate significant place images of the West and the geography of the Western. I selected a filmography of one hundred major Westerns based upon twenty different Western film credentials. My content analysis involved multiple viewings of each Western and cross-referencing film content like narrative titles, American Indian homelands, fort names, and tombstone dates with scholarly and popular publications. The Western spatially favors Apachería, the Borderlands and Mexico, and the High Plains rather than the Pacific Northwest. Also, California serves more as a destination than a spatial setting. Temporally, the heart of the Western beats during the 1870s and 1880s, but it also lives well into the twentieth century. The five major filming location clusters are the Los Angeles / Hollywood area and its studio backlots, Old Tucson Studios and southeastern Arizona, the Alabama Hills in California, Monument Valley in Utah and Arizona, and the Santa Fe region in New Mexico.

"The old Vitagraph lot, then ABC, now Disney in East Hollywood, once had a large backlot, but by the time of television, the backlot was gone. That stage later became Studio E at ABC, (now Stage 5). Eventually, the auditorium end of the stage was demolished to make way for a new studio now called Stage 4. The Vitaphone stage was sort of like the Phantom stage at Universal in that a portion of it had a permanent auditorium set with seats and boxes. It was removed once ABC took over. During the course of this class, we will examine the technical aspects of filmmaking (cinematography, lighting, editing, sound, etc.), the theoretical perspectives by which we can “unpack” film (auteur theory, genre theory, feminist theory, etc.), and the historical and cultural contexts in which films have been made. By the end of this course, you should be able to look at a film as more than a simple piece of entertainment, and begin to take it apart to understand how it has been constructed and what meanings it communicates. TEXTBOOKS (Required) Film Art: An Introduction (11th edition), David Bordwell, Kristin Thompson, and Jeff Smith (McGraw-Hill, 2017) Engaging Cinema: An Introduction to Film Studies, Bill Nichols (Norton, 2010) These textbooks are widely available from the campus bookstore, Off Campus Books, Amazon.com, and many textbook resellers. • Poverty Row Films of the 1930S by Robert J Read Department of Art History and Communication Studies
A Squalid-Looking Place: Poverty Row Films of the 1930s by Robert J Read Department of Art History and Communication Studies McGill University, Montreal August 2010 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy All rights reserved. This work may not be reproduced in whole or in part, by photocopy or by other means, without permission of the author. Robert J Read, 2010. ii Abstract Film scholarship has generally assumed that the low-budget independent film studios, commonly known as Poverty Row, originated in the early sound-era to take advantage of the growing popularity of double feature exhibition programs. However, the emergence of the independent Poverty Row studios of the 1930s was actually the result of a complex interplay between the emerging Hollywood studios and independent film production during the late 1910s and 1920s. As the Hollywood studios expanded their production, as well as their distribution networks and exhibition circuits, the independent producers that remained outside of the studio system became increasingly marginalized and cut-off from the most profitable aspects of film exhibition. By the late 1920s, non-Hollywood independent film production became reduced to the making of low-budget action films (westerns, adventure films and serials) for the small profit, suburban neighbourhood and small town markets. With the economic hardships of the Depression, the dominant Hollywood studios were forced to cut-back on their lower budgeted films, thus inadvertently allowing the independent production companies now referred to in the trade press as Poverty Row to expand their film practice.
