This paper approach the historical and archaeological analysis of the arrowheads collection from the excavation at Corullón castle (El Bierzo, León), which remained unpublished in León Museum. These finds allow to realize a typology which related them to another medieval types of archaeological sites in Spain and Europe. At the same time it intensified the relation of this castle with «irmandiña» revolution in the XV century, offering an evidence of the castle attack.     ● Written by Ferran Centelles 1 May 2017 Bierzo explained It's unlikely that with this article I am introducing you to Bierzo. There has been a pronounced increase in interest in this north-west Spanish region over the last 20 years. The potential of the region is beyond doubt, not just because it is the homeland of Mencía, a grape variety that has proved that it does not have to be rustic and can produce intense wines, but also because, according to Carmen Gómez, technical director at the Bierzo Consejo Regulador, it has one of the highest percentages of old vines in Spain. Almost 80% of the 3,000 ha (7,415 acres) are at least 60 years old, with many of the vines being centenarians. The Consejo has launched a project to preserve all old vines, via a land bank that helps to put elderly vine growers tempted to abandon old vines in touch with energetic younger ones, transferring ownership of 81 ha (200 acres) of old vines so far. The average yields are a moderate 7,000 kg/ha and there are 2,400 vine-growers, for many of whom viticulture is a weekend activity. Like all the regions that are on the pilgrims' route to Santiago de Compostela, such as Rioja, Navarra and Ribeiro, Bierzo's wines were already produced and valued by monks in the Middle Ages. Bierzo is located within the valley of the River Sil, from which it is Atlantic-influenced. However, the climate remains severely continental. Think of the region as a tectonic pot surrounded by a mountainous chain.

E-mail: [email protected] ABS TRACT El Bierzo Tertiary sub-basin (Oligocene–Miocene, NW Spain) is a small remnant of the western Duero Basin, a nonmarine broken foreland basin developed in front of the Cantabrian Mountains (Pyrenean orogen). The alluvial infill of El Bierzo Tertiary sub-basin consists of a coarsening-upward succession from fluvial (Toral Formation) to alluvial-fan deposits (Las Médulas Formation) and reflects the uplift of the Cantabrian Mountains, in the north, and then of the related Galaico-Leoneses Mountains, in the south. These alluvial deposits show signs of having been laid down mainly by catastrophic flows (flood-dominated systems) and consist of three main depositional elements, namely, flood-plain fines, and lobe and channel conglomerates and sandstones. The vertical stacking patterns of these deposits and their relationships to the Alpine structures permit to unravel the tectonosedimentary evolution of the basin. The alluvial-plain element is the main constituent of a wide unconfined alluvial plain (Toral Formation) during the early stages of basin evolution, whereas the channel and lobe elements form a set of relatively small, laterally confined alluvial fans (Las Médulas Formation) fed first from the north and then from the south.

La explotación minera de Las Médulas (Carucedo) por los romanos implicó la excavación de una extensa red de galerías en el interior de la montaña que se llenaban de agua hasta saturar los niveles inferiores, ocasionando así el derrumbe de los antiguos Montes Medulios. Para poner en marcha este sistema de extracción del oro, conocido como "Ruina Montium", fue necesaria la construcción de una red de 325 Km. de canales que permitieron traer el agua desde los cercanos Montes Aquilianos y embalsarla en la parte alta de la montaña. Fue la mayor mina a cielo abierto del Imperio Romano, con más de 3 Km. de extensión y 100 m. de profundidad. Confederación Hidrográfica del Miño-Sil. 2011. Más informacion: www.lasrutasdelagua.es SENDA DE LAS VALIÑAS Sendero que recorre, bajo un bosque de castaños centenarios, el circo principal de la explotación minera romana. Asciende hacia “La Cuevona” y “La Cueva Encantada”, dos bocaminas de una galería con una altura de casi 30 m. Desde aqui puede observarse los restos de la red hidráulica y comprender la verdadera dimensión de la mina. El camino de retorno desciende por campos de cultivo y ofrece una panorámica de los miradores del Parque. Ruta circular de escasa dificultad, de 4 km.

    El Camino Foncebadón - Ponferrada The route leaves Foncebadón and follows closely along the LE-142 motorway until the famous Cruz de Fierro or Cruz de Hierro, which indicates the 1,500m elevation at this point of the Camino, the highest on the Spanish side of the French Way. This is also the place where the chapel devoted to Santiago Apóstol can be found. Follow the path along the provincial road towards Manjarín, where the hostel is. From here you have 7 kilometres until the next village, El Acebo, with the first part over a flatland and the second descending on a stone footpath. From El Acebo, pilgrims need to head towards Compludo, Riego de Ambrós and Molinaseca, the next stops on the way, and with that they will have completed twenty kilometres. Before Ponferrada, one can still stop at Campo, with its Roman fountain and the church of Nuestra Señora de la Encina. The capital of El Bierzo is the last city on the French Way before reaching Santiago de Compostela. Ponferrada can boast of its fantastic Templar Castle, erected in the 11th century and preserved throughout the ages. Pilgrims can also visit the Calle del Reloj with its tower, and the Plaza del Ayuntamiento with the Town Hall. El consejo del cartero “On this day’s journey, pilgrims will find themselves before the Cruz de Fierro, a symbol of spirituality. It is customary for walkers to throw a stone with their backs turned to the cross while making a wish. There are thousands of stones gathered there. In el Cruce a Compludo we recommend visiting the Herrería de Compludo, a very well-preserved blacksmith’s forge now recognized as a national monument.
