Most of the neologisms in the novel denote corporations and their products and form part of a thoroughgoing critique of consumerism. The coinages are jarringly hyperbolic and their orthography often evokes contrary connotations. However, in the thematic context of the novel, coining practices follow certain patterns and function as effective, if ambiguous, satirical tools. On one level, the practice of branding is thoroughly satirized. On another, however, the neologisms point to both the limitations and possibilities of satire when dealing with the themes addressed in the novel: commoditization, environmental damage on a planetary scale, and a vision of the imminent end of humanity itself. KEYWORDS: Margaret Atwood; satire; brand names; literature; consumerism The Version of Record of this manuscript has been published and is available in Names: A Journal of Onomastics , Vol. 64(2): 88-98. http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/00277738.2016.1159448 Oryx and Crake (2003), the first novel of Margaret Atwood’s MaddAddam trilogy, is set in a near future in which current environmental concerns, as well as societal and biotechnological developments, have taken on decidedly dystopian dimensions. 1 This article explores the notion that Atwood’s criticism of current trends finds expression in a kind of Orwellian Newspeak, as is, for example, manifest in the seemingly incongruous brand names used in the novel. Atwood’s coinages are discussed by first briefly showing the significance of different types of naming in the novel. Next the different categories of corporate names and related coinages in Oryx and Crake are considered. These include coined names pertaining to the Internet and online gaming, and the names of bioengineering corporations and the products they develop (cosmetic procedures, foodstuffs, as well as new, spliced species). Neologisms fulfil structural, thematic, and stylistic functions in the novel, and these are exemplified in the discussion. In conclusion, the manner in which these hyperbolic coinages simultaneously highlight the limitations and possibilities of satiric coinage as means of critique is explored. Naming in Oryx and Crake Through much of the post-apocalyptic narrative of Oryx and Crake , Jimmy/Snowman, the protagonist, believes himself to be the last surviving human: his only companions are the Crakers, humanoid bioengineered beings designed as the ecofriendly replacements of humans. The apocalyptic event of the MaddAddam trilogy is a pandemic engineered to cause the demise of humanity, and to thus pave the way for the Crakers. The apocalypse forms a chasm in the narrative, a break that is underscored both onomastically, and through the tense of narration. The novel comprises two interwoven timelines: the post-apocalyptic present-tense narrative only spans a few days and is alternated with much longer sections consisting of Snowman’s flashbacks to his pre-apocalyptic life. He derives “bitter pleasure” from the adoption of this “dubious label” at a time when climate change has rendered snow obsolete in North America (Atwood, 2003a: 7). At first he describes the name as a shortened form of Abominable Snowman , a figure “existing and not existing” (Atwood, 2003a: 7), and therefore an appropriate name for perhaps the last remaining human being. Much later in the novel, Snowman realizes: Maybe he’s the other kind of snowman, the grinning dope set up as a joke and pushed down as an entertainment, his pebble smile and carrot nose an invitation to mockery and abuse. Maybe that’s the real him, the last Homo sapiens —a white illusion of a man, here today, gone tomorrow, so easily shoved over, left to melt in the sun, getting thinner and thinner until he liquefies and trickles away altogether. As Snowman is doing now. (Atwood, 2003a: 224) Although he deliberately chooses a name with a (to him) clear denotation, Snowman thus comes to realize that the more conventional sense of his name is more apt in his situation, especially with the added connotation of a snowman as a type of fool. This dissonance between denotation and possible connotations is characteristic of the naming practices in the novel, and is especially prominent in relation to its treatment of brand names, as will be seen shortly. Snowman is not the only character who changes his name in this novel. Members of the MaddAddam group, for instance, adopt the names of extinct species; Oryx and Crake , the two title characters, bear such names. Amanda Payne’s reinvention of herself hinges on the rejection of her original name, Barb Jones , whereas the Crakers are playfully named after important historical figures like Abraham Lincoln , Madame Curie , and Sojourner Truth . The significance of charactonyms in Atwood’s oeuvre has usually been noted in connection with her earlier acclaimed dystopian novel The Handmaid’s Tale (1985). 3 While charactonyms are not my central concern here, their prominence in Atwood’s novels in general, and in Oryx and Crake in particular, illustrates the importance of names and naming in her work. In Oryx and Crake , MaddAddam is an endonym used by a group of anti-corporation bioterrorists. Members of the group stay in touch through the Extinctathon game. The slogan of the game refers to naming too: “Adam named the living animals, MaddAddam names the dead ones” (Atwood, 2003a: 80). The game itself requires players to correctly guess the name of a recently extinct species by analyzing its “Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species,” and finally determining “the habitat and when last seen, and what had snuffed it” (Atwood, 2003a: 80). The palindromic name MaddAddam , with its doubled letters and internal capitalization, follows the same pattern as many of the coined brand names in the novel. In addition to conforming to the patterns of coinage used within the novel, this also suggests that Atwood plays with the notion of the commodification of literature or art as such. Both the final novel and the trilogy as a whole are entitled MaddAddam —confirming that coinage is not incidental, but integral to the trilogy. Coining Practices “Alternative universes,” as Terry Eagleton recently succinctly observed, “are really devices for embarrassing the present, as imaginary cultures are used to estrange and unsettle our own” (2015: n.p.). Oryx and Crake does exactly this. Coinage is one variety of invention, and in a sense, speculative fiction itself may be seen as an elaborate coining practice, comprising invented scenarios. In Atwood’s novel the near-future world of the text is always to be seen in relation to present concerns. Quite simply, despite its near-future setting the novel is a commentary on the historical circumstances of its origin. Coinage is manifest on different levels in the novel: the plot unfolds in an invented, near-future world; this near-future world abounds with coined names to denote new technologies and products; and the protagonist regularly coined terms in his marketing job prior to the pandemic. In the pre-apocalyptic world of the novel, environmental destruction and climate change have taken on catastrophic proportions. This, in turn, has led to vast inequalities in society, manifest in the segregation of cities into Compounds , inhabited by the privileged, and pleeblands , where the less-advantaged “pleebs” (slang for ‘plebeians’) lead a precarious existence. Multinational corporations have become de facto governments, and individuals are consumers, rather than citizens. The pre-apocalyptic consumer culture of the novel is an extrapolation of the brand-saturated postwar American culture examined by Friedman (1991), but Atwood’s narrative is not so much marked by the inclusion of existing brand names, as by the pervasive coinage of new ones. Commercial interests trump everything else in the world of Oryx and Crake. Intellectual endeavor tends to be concentrated on profitable fields of inquiry, such as bioengineering.

Although many other generically similar texts invite such readings by introducing eco-posthuman themes within the narrative – such as Michel Houellebecq’s Atomised and Kazuo Ishiguro’s Never Let Me Go – it is the fact that Oryx and Crake often seems actively to resist these readings that enables significant debates to emerge about some of the text’s main assumptions. By reading this text ‘against the grain’, we are able to confront and analyse the central beliefs, assertions and anxieties it vocalises regarding the future of humanity, nature and technology. The critical response to Oryx and Crake has been extensive and diverse, drawing on a range of theoretical foundations to provide a wide variety of interpretations.

According to Adrienne Rich’s definition, the “re-vision” of myths signifies the critical adaptation, appropriation, and invasion of traditional texts. As such, myths have not only legitimized exploitative power relationships, but they have also served as a powerful means to participate in and subvert hegemonic discourses. By drawing on the theories of Aby Warburg, Ernst Cassirer, and Hans Blumenberg, for whom myths constitute cultural-artistic mediations that involve the polarities of affect and intellect, terror and logos, Atwood’s revision of paradise in the MaddAddam trilogy may be approached in itself as—to use a term by Hans Blumenberg—a “work of logos.” I argue that Atwood revises paradise by duplicating the ancient human dreams of paradise into Crake’s techno pagan and Adam One’s eco-millennialist “gardens of delights,” both of which are refracted through evolutionary science and ecology. Characterized by human destructiveness, these posthuman paradises feature multiple Eves alongside the dominant male figures. Among Atwood’s Eves, there is the brazen Oryx as exploited racial “Other” of white society in the pathos formula of the Asian “digital virgin prostitute.” Atwood employs a self-reflexivity regarding myths that is characteristic of postmodern pastiche and thus highlights storytelling as the distinguishing characteristic of humankind, while her use of an evolutionary grotesque aesthetics erodes clear-cut distinctions between humans, animals, and post- humans.

    CHAPTER XI ORYX AND CRAKE: A POSTFEMINIST FUTURE Published in 2003, Oryx and Crake is Atwood’s third twenty-first century fiction publication, and is only prevented from being her first novel of the new millennium by The Blind Assassin, which appeared in 2000.1 But in theme and focus, it is Oryx and Crake that more consciously embraces the possibilities of a twenty-first century world, whereas The Blind Assassin, in contrast, very deliberately looks backwards, reflecting on the gains and losses of the previous century. The Blind Assassin concludes with the death of its elderly narrator, and as Iris passes away, Atwood seems to deliberately terminate the development of her progressively ageing twentieth-century heroines, who first appeared in 1969 in the form of Marian in The Edible Woman. As if to underline this wilful cessation of what has come to be regarded as an Atwood trope – “her use of first-person narrative to explore female imagination, consciousness and creativity”,2 as Showalter describes it – Atwood’s eleventh novel is her first to employ a primary male protagonist. If The Blind Assassin can be understood to trace the development and decline of second-wave feminism and to anticipate the possible rise of a third wave, Oryx and Crake depicts a much more negative scenario for feminism, signalled by the loss of the female voice, in which Atwood’s protagonists inhabit a future that is not only postfeminist, but posthuman.     The “Greening” of Postmodern Discourse in Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake and Graham Swift’s Waterland Victoria Addis For Klaus Stierstorfer, the key question for our times is whether postmodernist writers are ‘able to move beyond a negotiation of life without footholds, so to speak, towards some kind of newly-constituted solidity, and hence leading ‘beyond’ most scholars concepts of postmodernism’ (216). In this essay, I will argue that the groundlessness associated with postmodernism is not as entrenched within its discourse as it may appear. Graham Swift’s Waterland (1992) and Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake (2003) are two postmodernist works that present a more rooted ideology through their direct engagement with green issues. These seemingly disparate novels share an ecopostmodernist platform that raises questions about the human relationship with nature, while conforming to many of the aesthetic values of postmodernism. Both works actively interrogate the boundaries between human/animal/machine and nature/civilisation, revealing environmentally aware perspectives informed by a postmodern sensibility. In their encompassing of environmental and ecological perspectives, both novels critique elements of postmodernity and contemporary consumer capitalism, and raise serious questions about our relationship to the world around us. In defiance of traditional notions of postmodernism, Atwood’s and Swift’s novels exemplify an engagement with the natural world and present conceptions of reality that do not accept disengagement or detachment as a suitable response to the perceived ‘postmodernist cataclysms threatening the grounds of human existence’ (Stierstorfer 234). There are elements of postmodern discourse that are heavily critiqued for a lack of environmental responsibility.

INGERSOLL Two generations ago when the American New Critics preached a concentra- tion on “the work itself” (usually a poem) and a rejection of concerns with ev- erything outside the work, one major item on their agenda was eliminating the author as an authority for “his” work, stressing that once works are completed their authors become mere readers of their own productions. That intrinsic ap- proach has long since disappeared, especially with the commodifying of con- temporary authors who have become primary marketers of their work, encouraged by publishers to spend weeks “on the road,” doing readings, signing copies, granting interviews, and generally extending themselves as authorized readers of their most recent publications. As a best-selling novelist, Margaret Atwood is no exception, and on occasion she not only authorizes readings of her own fic- tion in public readings and in interviews but also writes an “Author’s Afterword” to a novel such as Alias Grace, in that particular case teasing readers of her “whodunit” with the possibility she might provide further clues, as Author, to clarify whether Grace was actually guilty of murder. Recently in the publicizing of her novel Oryx and Crake, Atwood has emphasized that the novel functions as a “book end” to The Handmaid’s Tale. Her encouragement of readers to connect these two examples of what she likes to term “speculative fiction” seems to provide a kind of carte blanche to read Oryx and Crake not only in connection with The Handmaid’s Tale but in the context of her other ventures into SF, most notably in the novel-within-a-novel of The Blind Assassin.

    Faustian Dreams and Apocalypse in Margaret Atwood’s Oryx and Crake ] ————————————————— GIUSEPPINA BOTTA Introduction FTER THE DISCOVERY of the deoxyribonucleic acid molecule on a cold February morning in 1953, the scientist James D. Watson had a great intuition: “DNA, as Crick and I appreciated, holds the A 1 very key to the nature of living things.” He was right, since the discovery of DNA has enabled the understanding of the mechanisms of the genes, which regulate the vital cycle of all cells. Furthermore, the achievements of molecu- lar biology have allowed to isolate, analyze, and manipulate DNA molecules, creating a technology which has modified all fields of experimental biology: from cellular biology to biochemistry, from genetics to physiology. The possi- bility of directly affecting fundamental human faculties implies, on the one hand, a reconsideration of certain aspects of the concept of the body in itself, and, on the other, a new definition of the border between the spontaneous and the artificial. Margaret Atwood builds the plot of Oryx and Crake (2003) around the extreme consequences of an excessive and unscrupulous exploita- tion of genetic engineering. Futuristic themes are not a brand-new topic in the author’s literary produc- tion. Atwood, in The Handmaid’s Tale (1985), had previously created a narra- tive universe projected on a future society and, in particular, on the conse- quences of a military and theocratic regime controlling every aspect of peo- ple’s lives, including maternity, which turns out to be both the rarest and the 1 James D.
