OVERALL DEVELOPMENTAL APPROACH The Committee's outline of their Development Plan for the coming years is encouraging and the involvement of youth, as exemplified by their project on Castlelough, and also the town map is to be commended. More work however, should be undertaken to highlight the proximity of Lough Derg - e. g. a viewing point on the entrance to the village from Ballina and improving the access roads from the village to the lake. The proposed new car park will relieve parking on the main street. THE BUILT ENVIRONMENT The public and commercial buildings are in the main well presented - the Parish Church and grounds, Scoil Mhuire (very good), the two public houses and the very well kept Texaco and Spar premises. The surrounds of the village hall should be improved. The Post Office premises (with petrol pump out front) still needs more attention. LANDSCAPING The standard of landscaping throughout the village is good - the Committee's further plans in this regard will greatly enhance the overall appearance of the village. More attention should be given to the grassed area at the corner of the Garrykennedy road (by the old School). Well done in acknowledging the fortieth year of the Tidy Towns Competition through the nicely planted flower bed at the top of the village. WILDLIFE AND NATURAL AMENITIES Portroe's natural setting - so close to the lakeshore, the backdrop of mountains and open spaces throughout the village and trees and hedge-rows give ample scope and potential for specific projects to preserve its wildlife and natural amenities - e.g. the planned planting of more semi-mature trees and the hedge rows in the Ardarra estate. LITTER CONTROL The overall impression is good throughout the village in that there appears to be an awareness of litter control. The provision of litter bins and wheelie "T and T" bins is helping. TIDINESS Again, the overall impression is of a tidy village, particularly along the main street and in the vicinity of public and commercial buildings - except around the village hall and the grassed area already referred to on the corner of the Garrykennedy road. RESIDENTIAL AREAS The general standard of presentation of residential premises, individual houses and especially those in the Ardarra estate is very good. The Dromslina development will, no doubt, be equally good when the landscaping around these new houses matures. ROADS, STREETS AND BACK AREAS The approach roads, especially from both Newtown and Ballina, are good. The proposed new signage is to be welcomed. The approach from Newtown and Nenagh is particularly impressive except for the area along a newly built bungalow before the Texaco Service Station. GENERAL IMPRESSION The general impression of Portroe is that there is obvious community involvement, an active Tidy Towns Committee and Local Authority co-operation, making the village an attractive place to live in and for visitors to the area. .
