BOARD BILL 5.06: A Resolution calling on the State House of Representatives to expel Representative

WHEREAS: Article II Section 9 of the Washington State Constitution establishes that the Washington ​ ​ ​ State House of Representatives has the power to, “with the concurrence of two-thirds of all the members elected, expel a member.”

WHEREAS: Washington State Representative Matt Shea leads the Patriot Movement, a far-right, anti-government extremist group, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center;

WHEREAS: Rep. Shea has continuously shown himself to have malicious intent and a lack of respect for the inalienable rights of individuals granted to them by the Constitution and the laws of Washington State;

WHEREAS: the Washington State House of Representatives commissioned independent investigators to investigate Rep. Shea’s malicious conduct;

WHEREAS: investigators released their findings in a report on December 1, 2019; ​ ​

WHEREAS: investigators found that Rep. Shea “planned, engaged in, and promoted a total of three armed conflicts of political violence against the United States government”;

WHEREAS: Rep. Shea was suspended from the House Republican Caucus following the release of the report;

WHEREAS: Rep. Shea is removed from his position as the ranking member of the House Environment and Energy committee as well as two other committees, and

WHEREAS: Rep. Shea refuses to resign from office, continuing to lead and promote far-right extremism;

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE ASSOCIATED STUDENTS OF THE UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON

THAT: the ASUW condemn the actions of Representative Matt Shea;

THAT: the ASUW call on the Washington House of Representatives to expel Representative Matt Shea from public office as soon as possible, and

THAT: this bill be forwarded to Student Senate Speaker Clara Coyote, Student Senate Vice Speaker Bryn Sinclair, ASUW President Kelty Pierce, Director of University Affairs Sam Akeyo, President of the Spokane NAACP Kurtis Robinson, Spokane Mayor David Condon, Spokane City Council President Ben ​ ​ Stuckart, WA State Senator Jamie Pederson, WA State Representative , and WA State Representative , WA State Representative J.T. Wilcox., WA State Representative , and Gonzaga Student Senate Speaker Phoebe Tang.
