2015-16 LONG BEACH STATE MEN’S GOLF del walker intercollegiate golf classic

Former Long Beach State head men’s golf coach Bob Livingstone and Jamie Mulligan, director of golf at the Virginia Country Club, announced on June 17, 2003 that the 49er Collegiate Golf Classic was renamed the Del Walker Intercollegiate. This year’s collegiate tournament will be played on March 7-8, 2011 at Virginia Country Club. The former 49er Collegiate Classic has been played 19 times, 12 of those at Virginia Country Club .

Walker was the 49er men’s golf coach for 11 years (1983-1994), was instrumental in saving the program from being dropped in the early 1990’s, and was inducted into the 49er Athletic Hall of Fame in 2000, with his wife Marty. Walker was a member of the UCLA golf team (1934-36) and he lost only one match during that span and won the Southern California Collegiate Championship. He was a full member of Virginia Country Club since 1940 and is a seven-time club champion there. Coach passed away on Jan. 25, 2007 at the age of 93, and is sorely missed by all who knew him.

“The membership is proud both of Coach Walker and its support of the 49er golf teams,” said Mulligan. “This is an ap- propriate honor, acknowledging both him and his career.”

The 49er golf program is currently endeavoring a scholarship in memory of Del and Marty Walker. People interested in supporting this endownment should contact the golf office at 562-985-4050.
