EighteenMore SnowBuntint Returns-W.--•o far as I know,there are very few bird-bandersin North America who have any successin trappingthe SnowBunting (Plectrophenax nivalis nivalis.) I am, therefore, givinghere my resultsfor the winterof 1932-1933. This note is a continua- tion of my three other notes on this species,which appeared in Bird- Bandb•g,•V'ol. I, No. 4, 1930,pp. 187and 188; Vol. II, No. 3, 1931,p. 127; and Vol. III, No. 4, 1932, pp. 175 and 176. The winter of 1932-33 was the most successful I have had in the five wintersthat I have beenbanding Snow Buntings. •Iy first SnowBunting capture during the winter was on October30, 1932, the bird comingto my feedingstation when natural feedinggrounds became partially coveredwith snow. This date set a new early recordof this speciesat my station, my earliestprevious record being December 7, 1932..Mthough this bird came to my stationat an early date, the winter up to the middle of January, 1933, was mostly favorablefor natural winter food, as there was not much snow- fall and not much cold weather, with the result that few visited the station until January, at which time sixteen were banded. February set a new high recordfor number banded,with 114, which is more than were banded any previouswinter. The number banded in March was a little lessthan during .March, 1932, the record being 61 in March, 1932, and 44 during !March, 1933. The whole number banded for the winter (1932-33) was 174, which is over twice as many as were banded during any previous winter. .My returnsfor the winter of 1932-33are as follows:

Marie, Michigan,.February 20, 1932, was shot at Newdale, Manitoba, November21, 1932. Thisis my mostwesterly record to date. Two of my Grosbeakswere taken in northern Minnesota in 1929, one of them at Karlstad in the northwest corner of the State. Newdale is about thirty- five milesnorth of Brandon,Manitoba, and sometwo hundredmiles north- west of Karlstad.--M. J. M.•E.

He marshalshis factsfrom all the naturalsciences, from biochemistry and zo61ogydown to animalhusbandry and agriculturaleconomics, and he presentsa lucid,-convincing picture Throughout the book--Measurement of Game Populations, Game Refuges,Control of Cover, Control of Disease,Game Economics,and Estheticsare a few of the chapter-headings--theauthor's thorough ground- ing in modernbiological principles is evident. Ecologistsand studentsof geographicaldistribution will approvewholeheartedly his practicalapplica- tion of manyof theirtenets. The principlesof ecologicalinterrelationships and the laws of territoriality as expressedby recent thinkers form the groundwork on which his whole managementplan is based. Though naturalistsnow t•ke them for granted,ideas such as that there is a definite and measurablelimit to the numbersof birds any given territory can supportwill probablybe regardedby mostsportsmen as astonishingly new. Anotherhypothesis which will undoubtedlybe thoughtradical by the old guard predicatesthe improvement of environmental conditionsas of far greater essentialimportance towards improving shooting than restocking with hand-raised birds. The author recognizesthe fact that game-birdsare disappearing,despite legflative efforts in their behalf. He outlines the usual developmentof. conservation methods as follows: 1. l•estriction of hunting. 2. Predator-control. 3. Reservationofgame lands (as parks, forests, refutes, etc.). 4. Artificialreplenishment (restocking and game-farming). 5. Environmentalcontrols (control of food, cover,special factors, and disease).
