THE LIGHTER SIDE OF THE GREEN MOVEMENT: THE THREE STOOGES AS EARLY ENVIRONMENTALISTS RONALD J. RYCHLAK* Aristotle's Rhetoric,' written 2400 years ago, explained that there are three important aspects to any persuasive presentation. He called them the logos, the ethos, and the pathos. The logos is the logic or reason of the argument. The ethos is the character or integrity of the speaker. The pathos is the emotional content of the presentation.' In attempting to make persuasive arguments in court, lawyers are well aware of the need to draw upon all of these components of persuasion. Arguments are always structured to at least appear logical; lawyers jealously guard their credibility; and emotional appeals are common. We most often think of the emotion of sympathy, but effective advocates use anxiety, love, fear, excitement, joy, tension, anger, and even humor to be persuasive.3 Like lawyers in court, judges use emotions, including humor, to make points in their opinions Similarly, law professors often strive for humor in the classroom. -

Famous New Yorkers Horwitz Brothers In show business, “stooges” can become stars. Slapstick comedy made three brothers from Brooklyn – Moe, Curly and Shemp Howard – into American legends. The Howards began as the Horwitz brothers, the youngest sons of Lithuanian Jewish immigrants. Samuel, born on March 11, 1895, was nicknamed “Shemp” for the way his mother pronounced the name “Sam.” Moses, born on June 19, 1897, was nicknamed “Moe” but sometimes called himself “Harry.” As the youngest, born on October 22, 1903, Jerome was nicknamed “Babe.” All three dropped out of high school to become entertainers. Moe was the most ambitious and the first to become a performer. He persuaded Shemp to join him in a comedy act that performed in vaudeville theaters across the country. On his own, Moe performed in theatrical stock companies and in early silent movies. One of Moe’s early show-business friends was Curly, Shemp and Moe in a Columbia Pictures publicity photo Lee Nash. By 1922 Nash had changed his name to Ted Healy and needed a new stooge for his comedy act. A stooge usually pretended to be an audience member, heckling the comic from his seat or wandering on stage to annoy him. Healy’s previous stooges were acrobats who took comical falls when hit. Moe was no acrobat, but audiences laughed when Healy hit him. They invited Shemp to attend a performance and join the action. Shemp then became one of Healy’s regular stooges, along with frizzy-haired Larry Fine. Healy and his stooges made their first movie in 1930. -

If it doesn’t kill outright, it wears away our adaptive reserves and tears at our patience, our civility and our souls. You’ve read this, heard this and, I fear, experi- enced it more in the last several years than ever before. Even if you grew up during World War 2 and the Cold War with their air-raids and duck-and-cover drills, you were younger then and not as worn out by constant threats and reports everywhere you turn. Unless we take positive steps, we may find that our sour moods begin to take a toll on our physical health. They have certainly put a dent in our emotional well-being already. Some have found that their sense of spiritual well-being has been compromised as well. There are many ways to fight the malaise that sometimes threatens to engulf us. Doctors and health specialists have a cornucopia of remedies. The wellness industry has introduced soothing sup- plements into everything from bath oils to ice cream to dog treats! But sometimes you don’t want to turn to external fixes; you want to salve your soul. That’s where we at B’nai Harim are particularly fortunate. -

Were the Three Stooges Really Good Project Managers? by Gareth Byatt, Gary Hamilton, and Jeff Hodgkinson, with Eric Lamond Background: For those of you not familiar with the Three Stooges, they were an American vaudeville and comedy act of the early to mid–20th century best known for their numerous short subject films. Their hallmark was physical farce and extreme slapstick. In films, the Stooges were commonly known by their first names: "Moe, Larry, and Curly" and "Moe, Larry, and Shemp," among others. The film trio was originally composed of Moe How- ard, brother Shemp Howard and Larry Fine. Curly Howard replaced brother Shemp, who later returned when Curly suffered a debilitating stroke in May 1946. Starting in 1922 until Moe’s death in 1975, the team ap- peared in exactly 220 films (30 motion pictures and 190 short films). Some 50 years after their last short film was released, the Three Stooges remain wildly popular with audiences around the world. Their films have not left the television airwaves since first appearing in 1958, and they con- tinue to delight old fans while attracting a new legion of fervent admirers. A hard-working group of working- class comedians who were never the critic's darlings, the team endured several personnel changes in their ca- reers that would have permanently sidelined a less persistent act. Despite his watching two of his brothers die in a brief span of time, the Stooges would not have lasted as long as they did as a unit without Moe Howard's guiding hand. In the end, it is the durability of the 190 timeless short films the Stooges made at Columbia Pictures that acts as an enduring tribute to the comedy team. -
