He has strong Midwest ties. An Ohio native who has spent half of his coaching career in the state, he has been effective recruiting its top talent. Dantonio had served as the defensive coordi- nator at Ohio State the previous three seasons, where he helped craft the defense which was the backbone of the Buckeyes success. Ohio State's defense was the nation's second stingiest against the run in 2003, allowing 62.3 yards per game, and was ranked No. 10 in total defense and No. 16 in scoring defense. Those efforts helped the Buckeyes attain the No. 4 ranking in the final polls. Dantonio assembled the defense which led Ohio State to the national title in 2002. The Buck- eyes were second nationally in scoring defense (13.1) and third in rushing defense (77.7) during their perfect season. Six Buckeye defenders were named first team All-Big 10 during Dantonio’s tenure there and 13 were drafted by the pros, which includes a pair of first-round picks. Dantonio has compiled 23 seasons of coaching experience in the college ranks, 12 of them in the state of Ohio, where he earned all-state football honors as a senior at Zanesville High. Prior to his stint at Ohio State, Dantonio spent six seasons (1995-2000) as secondary coach at The Dantonio Family: Mark and Becky with daughters Lauren and Kristen Michigan State, five under Nick Saban and one un- der Bobby Williams. Don Treadwell has amassed a wealth of offensive coaching experience during his 21 seasons in the college ranks. Upon becoming Cincinnati’s offensive coordinator in 2004, he put together a bal- anced offense which topped the 2,000-yard mark in both rushing (2,201) and passing (2,666), only the second time that feat has been accomplished in UC history. Working with the wide receivers, Treadwell tutored Hannibal Thomas, who compiled the fourth 1,000-yard receiving season by a Bearcat while earning all-conference honors. Treadwell has served as offensive coor- dinator at four schools. In 2003, he devel- oped Ball State’ offense which set school records for passing yards and passing TDs. Pat Narduzzi has made a habit out of coaching champi- onship-caliber defenses. Upon becoming Cincinnati’s defensive coordinator in 2004, Narduzzi constructed the de- fense which led the Bearcats to a runner-up finish in Confer- ence USA and a championship in the Fort Worth Bowl. UC was ranked No. 49 in total defense last season, 37th against the pass. Three Bearcat defenders, Trent Cole, Tyjuan Hagler and Daven Holly, were taken in the NFL Draft, while six from last year’s defense earned all- league recognition. Prior to coming to Cincinnati, Narduzzi was the architect of the Miami (Ohio) unit in 2003 which helped the RedHawks to a No. 10 finish in the national polls, a Mid-American Conference champi- onship and a win over Louisville in the GMAC Bowl. Miami was ranked first in the MAC in four defensive categories and ranked No. 24 nationally in total defense. Defensive Narduzzi previously helped Northern Illinois to a pair of MAC divisional titles during his three Coordinator seasons there (2000-02) as coach.
