VIRGINIA’S BLUE RIDGE BUSINESS JOURNAL ROANOKE/NEW RIVER VALLEYS & REGION FREE • ISSUE 126 • MARCH 2019 vbFRONT.com Business On Ice Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs WELCOME to the FRONT “For a thousand years, it’s just the same… Cats have the wit and Dogs have the game.” A “Maria from Peachtree City, GA” submitted that verse on a pet poetry blog. Insightful, I’d say. Dogs and cats not only capture our hearts, they also scurry, slink, bounce or bound across our floors right into our businesses and vocations. Today’s issue of FRONT presents a dog breeder and cat veterinarian—two small businesses that serve big passions. If those animal stories aren’t enough, we have Rail Yard Dawgs and a sort of junkyard dog to round out the mix. Yep, we’re right here along with our subjects, wagging our tails and purring for you… your friendly little ol’ business journal, starving for your attention and just hoping you pick us up. Other Hockey Leagues
OTHER HOCKEY LEAGUES {Appendix 4.1, to Sports Facility Reports, Volume 17} Research completed as of August 13, 2016 NATIONAL WOMEN’S HOCKEY LEAGUE League Update: The league’s inaugural season began in October 2015 with four teams: the Boston Pride, the Buffalo Beauts, the Connecticut Whale, and the New York Riveters. All the teams are owned and paid for through the non-profit NWHL Foundation. The foundation depends on donations to fulfill its goal of being able to pay the players and provide education and training opportunities to youths to increase female participation in hockey throughout the country. The players’ pay ranges from the $10,000 minimum up to $25,000. In December 2015, the NWHL signed their first corporate sponsorship deal with Dunkin’ Donuts. As part of the multi-year agreement, Dunkin’ Donuts became the official coffee and quick-service restaurant of the NWHL. The Dunkin’ Donuts logo is also featured on all team jerseys, signage on league goal posts and behind each bench, and advertising on the league and team websites. In April 2016, former National Women’s Hockey League executive Mike Moran filed a lawsuit against the NWHL. In the ongoing lawsuit, Moran is seeking to recoup over $200,000 he invested during the league’s inaugural season. Before leaving the league, Moran made payments to cover ice time, to hire a public relations firm, and to help the league meet its first payroll in October. Moran left the NWHL last year. The National Hockey League and the NWHL hosted the first Outdoor Women’s Classic presented by Scotiabank. -

Real estate development will likely be severely dampened during the recovery period. The trends in real estate usage may also adjust, such as a stronger work-from-home dynamic, lessening the need for large office spaces Pandemic generally. At-home delivery of retail and restaurant items may impact the future of such development, accelerating a trend that was already occurring, at least in the retail space. Caveat On a positive note, during any recessionary period, the cost of labor and materials for real estate development generally declines, making projects more viable from a cost perspective. Attendance for the Knoxville Ice Bears and Elements that Have an Impact By: Rebekah Jackson Advisor: Dr. Chad Autry As a marketing major and a sports enthusiast, I have always been interested in the techniques sports teams use to bring in the most fans to their games. For this reason, I conducted research on the Knoxville Ice Bears of the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) to determine what techniques they use and to see how they could better determine what effects attendance and what they can do themselves to bring in more people at every game throughout the hockey season. Background of the SPHL The SPHL officially began with the 2004-05 season, and saw a large expansion in 2009 that included three new franchises in Biloxi, Mississippi, Lafayette, Louisiana, and Pensacola, Florida.
