A staple in the New York region and an emerging program on the national stage, the Manhattanville College Athletic Department continues to bolster its reputation as a program on the rise in all areas: athletic achievement, academic success and overall participation. More than 300 Valiant student-athletes (nearly 20 percent of the student body) took part in intercollegiate athletics during the 2009-10 school year showcasing the continued and rapid growth of athletics at Manhattanville. Following the successful integration of the men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track teams in 2008-09, the program has expanded to 21 intercollegiate teams – including seven new teams that have been established or re-established since 2007 alone. And teams at Manhattanville do not just compete, they win. Seven different programs earned conference regular-season or tournament championships in 2009-10 – a total bettered by only 13 Division III schools – and two Valiant teams (baseball and men’s golf) appeared in the NCAA Tournament. Fifteen of 21 Valiant teams earned berths in their respective conference championships last year, including confer- ence championships for the baseball, men’s golf and men’s hockey pro- grams. Three Manhattanville teams (men’s hockey, women’s hockey and women’s soccer) also received national rankings over the course of the year, the most in a single school year since 2004-05. On an individual level, many Valiant student-athletes were honored in 2009-10 as well. A program-record four Valiants – A.J. Mikkelsen and Mickey Lang (men’s hockey), Katie Little (women’s hockey) and Dan Fiorito (baseball) received All-American accolades, while an incredible six players were named conference Player of the Year. Manhattanville athletes also earned two conference Rookie of the Year awards and a school-record 49 All-Conference honors. In the last 10 years, at least 30 former Valiants have gone on to play professionally either domestically or overseas. But at Manhattanville, athletics is only one part of becoming a well- Manhattanville Quick Facts: rounded student-athlete. Levinthal also serves as head coach of Manhattanville’s nationally recognized men’s hockey program. Levinthal has led the Valiant athletic program to unprecedented heights in recent years, as Manhattanville has collected 48 conference championships – 25 regular-season championships and 23 tournament titles – in the last seven seasons alone. In that span, the program has also produced 25 conference Players of the Year, 15 All-American selections and one National Player of the Year. The Valiants put together another very strong overall season in 2009-10, as seven different programs achieved either a regular-season or conference tournament championship. Sixteen of the 21 Valiant programs reached their conference tournament during the year, including Freedom Tournament titles and NCAA Tournament appearances by the men’s golf and baseball teams. Multiple teams ascended to new heights in 2009-10, including the men’s golf team, which won its conference title by an amazing 39 strokes, and the women’s soccer team, which achieved the fi rst NSCAA national ranking in program history thanks to a program-record 17 wins. On an individual level, Manhattanville produced a program-record four All-Americans, six conference Players of the Year and four conference Coaches of the Year. Manhattanville had one of the most successful seasons in program history in 2008-09, posting a cumulative department winning percentage of .548 (184- 151-6), while successfully integrating new men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track programs that raised the number of varsity sports at Manhattanville to 21. Three teams – men’s basketball, men’s tennis and baseball – earned Freedom Conference regular-season championships, while the men’s tennis and women’s lacrosse teams set new program records for wins in a season. The Valiants also produced two All-Americans, four conference Players of the Year, three conference Coaches of the Year and three conference Rookies of the Year. In 2007-08, Levinthal guided the Athletics Department as it transitioned from the Skyline Conference to the Freedom Conference and also reintroduced volleyball and cross country programs to the school. The Valiants saw immediate success in its new conference as two teams clinched Freedom Conference regular-season championships and three programs won conference tournaments in advancing to the NCAA Tournament. The women’s hockey team advanced to the program’s third National Championship game, while the women’s soccer team reached the NCAA Tournament for the fi rst time in program history. Levinthal also led the Valiants to a record-breaking year in 2006-07, as six teams won conference championships and a program-record fi ve teams qualifi ed for the NCAA Tournament. His men’s hockey team spent 13 consecutive weeks as the top-ranked team in the nation and earned its fi rst-ever berth in the national semifi nals, while goaltender Andrew Gallant became the fi rst Manhattanville student-athlete to be named a National Player of the Year. Six coaches were named as conference Coach of the Year, while two Valiant student-athletes were also named ESPN The Magazine Academic All-Americans. And, for the fi rst time ever, Valiant teams won more league championships than any other Skyline Conference team. Levinthal saw immediate athletic success during his fi rst year at the helm, as all 14 of Manhattanville’s athletic programs participated in postseason play during the 2003-04 year. But in addition to athletic success, at the heart of every successful program lie sound resources for its lifeblood – its student-athletes. Therefore, Levinthal has made it a priority to provide the resources needed to create an environment in which Manhattanville student-athletes can achieve at the highest level academically, socially and athletically. In 2004, Levinthal received the honor of serving on the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Rules Committee. The NCAA selects 13 members to serve on the committee and only four from Division III institutions. Levinthal began his term on Sept. 1, 2004 and left his four-year post on at the beginning of the 2008-09 school year. A 1995 graduate of Hobart College, Levinthal is committed to developing all aspects of the athletics program. In his tenure at Manhattanville, Levinthal’s agenda has included: Student-Athlete Development - Manhattanville continues to be on the cutting edge in the total development of its student-athletes. Valiant student- athletes have exhibited a strong presence and desire to serve the New York area. All varsity teams participate in outreach activities, positively impacting numerous area youth groups, hospitals, schools and agencies. Professionalism - Under Levinthal’s guidance, Manhattanville athletics received a much-needed face-lift. With a new website, logo, team colors and method of business, he has streamlined and energized the department. The result has been increased exposure to Manhattanville student-athletes, improved performance both on and off the fi eld, and increased support from fans and alumni. Exposure - Manhattanville Athletics continues to maintain a strong presence on national and regional media outlets. Levinthal has helped increase the program’s media opportunities as well as displaying the values of the Valiants constantly in the public eye. Assistant Director of Athletics Julene Fisher Sixth Year • Marymount ’02 Julene Fisher is in her sixth year as Assistant Athletic Director and Senior Woman Administrator, and her eighth year overall within the Manhattanville Athletic Department in 2010-11. Radomski helped the team to an 18-19-1 record and a second-place finish in the Freedom Conference in her second year at the helm in 2010, giving the team its first Freedom Tournament berth in three years with the conference and its highest conference finish since its last year in the Skyline Conference in 2007.

Under her guidance, Samantha Howe led the Freedom Conference in ERA and both Lynsey Schill and Ashley Dell were named to the All-Conference first and second team, respectively, after the season. Her Valiants were especially dangerous at home, as the team posted a 10-3-1 record in 14 games at Manhattanville Field.

In her first season as a collegiate head coach in 2009, Radomski led the Valiants to a 19-19 record, the second-most wins by a first-year coach in program history and the fifth-highest single-season win total all- time at Manhattanville. Two of her players, Howe and Nicole Oliva were named to the All-Freedom Conference team following the season as the Valiants just missed a berth in the Freedom Conference Tournament with a 7-9 conference mark.

Radomski and her Valiant team proved to be a very resilient squad in 2009, as Manhattanville recorded five walk-off wins at Manhattanville Field and also won two more games in its final at-bat on the home field.

A 2003 graduate of American International College in Springfield, Mass., Radomski brings a wealth of coaching and playing experience to Purchase. From 2004-2008, she served as an assistant coach at Division II American International, where she assisted in the teaching of fundamentals and strategies and also worked with and catchers to call pitches during games. In addition, Radomski played a role in the Yellow Jackets’ recruiting efforts and also helped to plan practices.

Prior to her coaching work at American International, Radomski served as a Graduate Associate Softball Coach at Division III Springfield College, working exclusively with the team’s pitchers and catchers on mechanics and game strategy.

During her four-year collegiate playing career at American International, Radomski was named to the Northeast-10 All-Conference first team as a senior and was a two- time All-NEISCA team honoree in 2001 and 2003. As a senior, she helped the team to the Northeast-10 Conference Tournament Championship and a berth in the NCAA Tournament by leading the Yellow Jackets with a .326 batting average and 27 runs batted in while also posting a 14-9 record and a 2.13 ERA in the circle.

In her four seasons in an AIC uniform, Radomski appeared in 201 career games for the Yellow Jackets and registered a .289 batting average at the plate. Also a team leader in the circle, Radomski went 36-26 with a 2.34 ERA and 171 in 78 career appearances. Assistant Coach Sara Puglisi Second Season • American International ’09 Sara Puglisi completed her first year as an assistant coach with the Manhattanville softball team in 2010 and returns for her second season with the Valiants in 2011.

As assistant coach, Puglisi assists in all facets of the Valiant softball program, including on- and off-campus recruiting, scouting, and game and practice preparation and management.

In her first season with the Valiants in 2010, Manhattanville posted an 18-19-1 record and reached the Freedom Conference Tournament for the first time in three seasons.

Puglisi was a four-year varsity letterwinner on the softball field for Division II American International College, where she started 64 of her 83 career appearances in the circle. In four seasons with the Yellow Jackets, she compiled 26 wins and struck out 261 batters while posting a 3.14 ERA and was named team captain her senior year. Puglisi was also the recipient of the College’s Alumnae Award, which is presented to a female student-athlete who exhibits outstanding qualities of leadership, scholarship and athletic ability as well as a superior attitude in regards to cooperation and overall contribution to her team.

Puglisi had her best statistical season as a freshman, appearing in 23 games and tossing a career-high 107.0 innings. She struck out a career-best 103 batters with a 2.49 ERA in her first collegiate season, including posting a 7-1 mark in her final 11 appearances of the year.

2011 Manhattanville Softball Media Guide 21 Facilities Manhattanville Field Nestled in the northernmost corner of Manhattanville’s suburban New York campus, the newly renovated Manhattanville Field is the exclusive home of the Valiant women’s softball program. Following the 2009 season, Manhattanville Field received a complete renovation that has turned the facility into one of the best softball fields in the area. For the first time, the softball team and its opponents enjoyed fully enclosed and covered dugouts as well as a permanent outfield fence in 2010, while both the infield and outfield surfaces were re-leveled to provide surer hops, more foul territory and a better overall playing experience. Also as part of the renovation, there is now more room for spectators to sit and enjoy the Valiant softball team along the baselines as well as the customary bleachers in the outfield. One of the more intimidating places in the region for a visiting team to play at, the Valiant softball team has enjoyed a tremendous home-field advantage at Manhattanville Field in recent seasons. Over the last six years, the Valiant softball team has posted an excellent 74-19-1 (.793) record at Manhattanville Field, including a 37-8 mark against conference opponents on the home field. Last season, the Valiants won 10 of their 14 games played at Manhattanville Field, including a pair of Freedom Conference doubleheader sweeps over Eastern and Wilkes and freshman Alyssa Taylor’s five-inning no-hitter against John Jay on April 6, 2010. Manhattanville Field also has seen its share of conference tournament games in recent years, as the Valiants have posted a 10-3 record and won three Skyline Conference Tournament Championships on their home field since 2002. Kennedy Gymnasium Dedicated in October 1957 by the family of eventual United States President John F. Kennedy, Kennedy Gymnasium is the day-to-day home of the Manhattanville Department of Athletics and also serves as the home court for the Valiant men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball programs. With balcony and ground-level seating for 1,000 spectators, Kennedy Gymna- sium gives the Manhattanville teams that play inside it a loud and imposing home- court advantage. With bleachers lining the near sideline of the court and a large balcony overhanging the bleachers, there is plenty of room for Valiant friends, family and fans to cheer on their favorite Manhattanville teams throughout the season. The main gymnasium also includes a new scoreboard, a brand-new scorer’s table, as well as phone and internet access that allows all Valiant games inside Kennedy Gym to be broadcast as either an audio or video stream. New lighting was recently installed in the gym as well in order to enhance the fan and player experience. In addition to the main gym, the Kennedy complex also houses a full-length swimming pool as well as the department’s strength & conditioning and sports medicine facilities, which are located on the ground floor of the building and are fully-staffed year round.

Kennedy Gym Facilities Kennedy Gym’s main attraction, a basketball and volleyball arena, is flanked by strength & conditioning, sports medicine, locker room and office facilities, as well and a full-length swimming pool and dance studio. All in-season sports have their own space inside Kennedy Gymnasium’s several locker rooms (one of which is pictured to the left), with each player allowed his or her own locker for the full season. Inside the fully-enclosed locker rooms, members of the coaching staff can address their team before, during and after games, while the rooms also serve as a perfect congregating spot for teams at any time throughout the season. The rest of the locker rooms inside Kennedy Gym include full shower and locker fa- cilities, as well as access to Manhattanville’s swimming pool, strength and conditioning facilities, and athletic training facilities, all of which are fully-staffed year round. As the day-to-day administrative home of the Manhattanville Athletic Department, the offices of almost all varsity head and assistant coaches at the school are also located within the Kennedy Gym walls, as are the offices of all Manhattanville athletics adminis- trators and support staff. Manhattanville’s athletic trophies and banners, highlighting the program’s best ac- complishments throughout the school’s distinguished athletic history, are also located inside the lobby and main arena of Kennedy Gymnasium. The gym also plays host to several camps and local recreational groups during the summer and throughout the school year.

22 2011 Manhattanville Softball Media Guide Support Staff Strength & Conditioning Focused on the overall development of the student-athlete, the Manhattanville Strength & Conditioning staff will maximize the athletic performance of Valiant student-athletes by using the most effective and effi cient training techniques to compete injury free at the highest level of competition. The aim is to instill a sense of self-discipline, respect and responsibility to achieve the ultimate goal of a team championship. The strength and conditioning department is housed inside Healthworks, a large, state-of-the-art weight and cardiovascular training facility located on the bottom fl oor of the Athletic Department hub, Kennedy Gymnasium. The room includes several power development stations, glut ham benches, decline abdominal benches and physioballs and cardiovascular machines that are available for student-athlete use both in and out of season as well as during the summer. In 2007, Manhattanville College opened the new Richard A. Berman Student Center in the center of campus that includes a fi rst-class workout area for the general student population; as a result, Healthworks is now the exclusive strength and conditioning home of Valiant student-athletes. THE CORE VALUES Proudly a value-oriented liberal arts college for more than 150 years, Manhattanville is still guided by the mission “to educate students to become ethically and socially responsible leaders for the global community.” Manhattanville is committed to following its mission by: • Ensuring the intellectual, ethical and social development of each student within a community of engaged scholars and teachers; • Encouraging each student to develop as an independent leader and creative thinker in pursuing career and personal goals; and • Providing a diverse, inclusive and nurturing environment which develops in each student a commitment to service and leadership within a global community. MY SOLDIER Manhattanville’s most well-known social action program was founded by a Valiant student-athlete, men’s soccer player Juan Salas, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Venezuela who saw active combat duty in Iraq and was commended for saving the life of a child during his tour. Salas said his mission in Iraq was to “win the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people,” but he continued that while the service was at times challenging, “it was the letters that kept me going. From kids, boy scouts, students. A letter was like a piece of gold, something you want to keep for the rest of your life.” When Salas got back to Manhattanville, he wanted to help his fellow soldiers overseas and approached former College President Richard A. Berman with an idea. Together with Berman and administrator Anne Gold, they launched the My Soldier program on February 14, 2004.
