Seasonal status and movement of Pirenella cingulata according to habitat change studied from mangroves of Ghogha coast from December 2014 to November 2015. The maximum density (4.4/m2 area) of Pirenella cingulata reported during winter and lowest during monsoon (0.20/ m2 area). This mud snail was observed dependent on the mangrove during adverse climatic conditions during summer and monsoon seasons. Temperature and dissolved oxygen levels influence the density of P. cingulata. China Abstract.- The effect of saltmarsh cordgrass, Spartina alterniflora (Poales: Poaceae) invasion stage on Cerithidea cingulata (Caenogastropoda: Potamididae) distribution was studied in 2007 at the eastern tidal flat of Lingkun Island, Wenzhou Bay, China. The distribution pattern of C. cingulata was aggregated during each season, as shown in experiments utilizing Taylor's power regression and Iowa's patchiness regression methods (P < 0.001). Two- way ANOVA indicated that densities were significantly affected by S. alterniflora invasion stage (P < 0.001), however, no significant season effect was found (P = 0.090) and on the interaction between the seasons (P = 0.939). The density distribution during the invasion stage was significantly different in each season as shown in one-way ANOVA. Pearson’s correlation coefficient analysis of density data indicated that the highest densities occurred in habitats at the initial invasion stage during summer. The peak in C. cingulata density during spring, autumn and winter occurred in habitats where invasion was classified as initial, whereas the lowest densities occurred in the stage of invasion completed during each season.

Several morphologic characters of cerithiform shells are adap- tive within five broad functional areas: (1) defence from shell-peeling predators (external sculpture, pre- adult internal barriers, preadult varices, adult aperture) (2) burrowing and infaunal life (burrowing sculp- tures, bent and elongated inhalant adult siphon, plough-like adult outer lip, flattened dorsal region of last whorl), (3) clamping of the aperture onto a solid substrate (broad tangential adult aperture), (4) stabilisa- tion of the shell when epifaunal (broad adult outer lip and at least three types of swellings located on the left ventrolateral side of the last whorl in the adult stage), and (5) righting after accidental overturning (pro- jecting dorsal tubercles or varix on the last or penultimate whorl, in one instance accompanied by hollow ventral tubercles that are removed by abrasion against the substrate in the adult stage). Most of these char- acters are made feasible by determinate growth and a countdown ontogenetic programme.

This is the second part of a series on the German zoologist Johannes Thiele (1860-1935) and comprises a critical listing of the genus-group taxa which he described as new to malacology. Each of these names is accompanied by author and bibliographic references, original status, type-species with its original binominal spelling and bibliographic source and some data on subsequent taxonomic placements. Thiele introduced a total of 291 such names in the Phylum Mollusca, distributed as follows: 11 Aplacophora; 39 Polyplacophora; 200 Gastropoda (138 Prosobranchia; 20 Opisthobranchia and 42 Pulmonata); 31 Bivalvia; 10 Cephalopoda; there were no new scaphopod or monoplacophoran names. A total of 100 species, including 45 species of Gastropoda, 54 species of Bivalvia, and one species of Scaphopoda, were discriminated. The fauna is referred to the Kadonosawa Fauna s.s. on the basis of the occurrences of the intertidal “Arcid-Potamid Fauna” and the upper sublittoral Dosinia-Anadara Assemblage. The upper sublittoral assemblages include Turritella (Turritella) kiiensis Yokoyama, Turritella (Hataiella) yoshidai Kotaka, T. (Kurosioia) neiensis Ida, Ostrea sunakozakaensis (Ogasawara), Cucullaea (Cucullaea) toyamaensis Tsuda, Siphonalia osawanoensis Tsuda, and Varicospira toyamaensis (Tsuda). These species are distributed as far north as the southernmost part of northeast Honshû at that time, and their geographic distributions are identical with the Miocene mangrove swamp element. The occurrences of these species strongly support the previous paleoclimatic reconstruction of the Japanese Islands during the latest Early–earliest Middle Miocene age on the basis of the intertidal molluscan assemblages, and show that central and southwest Honshû was under the warmer marine climate than in northeast Honshû and northwards. All the species including a new cardiid, Parvicardium? mikii sp. nov., are described and/or discussed taxonomically.

Shells are being considered here as the shell bearing molluscs of the Gastropoda, Bivalvia and Scaphopoda. The area does not only comprise the Red Sea, but also the Gulf of Aden, Somalia and the Suez Canal, including the Lessepsian species in the Mediterranean Sea. Literature on fossils shells, particularly those from the Holocene, Pleistocene and Pliocene, is listed too. Introduction My interest in recent shells from the Red Sea dates from about 1996. Since then, I have been, now and then, trying to obtain information on this subject. Some years ago I decide to stop gathering data in a haphazard way and to do it more properly. This resulted in a first survey of approximately 1,420 and a second one of 2,025 references (van Gemert, 2010 & 2011). Since then, this survey has again been enlarged and revised and a number of errors have been corrected. It contains now approximately 3,050 references. Scope In principle every publication in which molluscs are reported to live or have lived in the Red Sea should be listed in the survey. This means that besides primary literature, i.e. articles in which researchers are reporting their finds for the first time, secondary and tertiary literature, i.e. reviews, monographs, books, etc are to be included too. In an attempt to understand the distribution and species composition of gastropod assemblages which live in these hyper-thermic and hyper-saline conditions a rapid assessment survey was undertaken along the intertidal zone of Qatar. The research revealed an obvious geographical temperature/salinity gradient between sites on the southeast and southwest coastlines. Water temperatures of 34°C and salinities ranging from 39.9 to 56.8ppt were recorded in-situ. There was detectable change in gastropod assemblage composition in accordance with this gradient. The abundance and diversity of live species decreased as temperature and salinity rose while high densities of dead species were recorded at sites where extremes of temperatures and salinities were documented. Ceritidiopsila conica was the dominant species at sites which experienced the most extreme conditions and has value as a recognized bio-indicator of high temperature/salinity environments within the region.

Mauro Brunetti Via 28 Settembre 1944 Riassunto 2, 40036 Rioveggio (BO), Sono esaminate le specie del Plio-Pleistocene italiano appartenenti alla famiglia Potamididae, in cui sono Italia, presenti tre generi: Cerithideopsilla, Thiele, 1929, Potamides Brongniart, 1810 e Ptychopotamides Sacco, [email protected] 1895. Rimane dubbia la presenza di Tympanotonos Schumacher, 1817. Il genere Cerithideopsilla compren- de tre specie: Cerithideopsilla etrusca (Mayer, 1864), Cerithideopsilla cf. graeca (Deshayes, 1832) e Cerithi- deopsilla sp. Per il genere Potamides sono presenti due specie: Potamides aff. gaudryi Larazet, 1894, con status incerto a causa dello scarso materiale esaminato, e Potamides granosus (Borson, 1821), specie molto variabile, presente con tre morfotipi principali, corrispondenti alle specie note in letteratura come Potamides basteroti (De Serres, 1829), P. tricinctum var. bargellini Fucini, 1891 e P. giulii de Stefani, 1889. Ptychopotamides, caratterizzato dalla plica columellare e finora ritenuto sottogenere di Potamides, è ele- vato al rango di genere, di cui l’unico rappresentante pliocenico e Ptychopotamides tricinctus (Brocchi, 1814). Al genere Tympanotonos è dubitativamente assegnata la specie nota come Potamides turbinatus (Brocchi, 1814), di cui si conosce solo una segnalazione oltre a quella originale. Results of the study found a 6 family and 14 species for class of Gastropods (Cassidula aurisfelis, Ellobium aurisjudae, Littoraria scabra, L. undolata, Pugilina cochlidium, Chicoreus capucinus, Indothais gradata, Nerita articulata, N. violacea, Cerithidea obtusa, C. quoyii, Cerithideopsilla alata, Cerithidiopsis malayensis and Telescopium telescopium), and 1 family and 1 species for of class Bivalves (Polymesoda bengalensis).
