Walnut, Calif. (April 12) --- Nebraska had atheletes in competition at three separate road meets across the country Friday. Leading the way were Peter van der Westhuizen and Natalja Zarcenko, who posted standout efforts in the 1,500-meter run at the Mt. SAC Relays. Both Huskers clocked personal best times to reach the NCAA regional qualifying standards for their events, while also moving up on NU’s all-time event charts. The lone NU men’s athlete at Mt. SAC, van der Westhuizen moved into fifth place all-time on the school's men's 1,500-meter chart with a third-place time of 3:41.74, a time that would have ranked third nationally entering the weekend. The Husker junior Natalja Zarcenko, So. was the second collegian finisher. Zarcenko jumped into the eighth position on NU’s all-time performance list in the women’s 1,500 with a fourth-place effort of 4:22.55. She won the first of two heats by a comfortable margin of nearly two seconds to earn her first regional mark of the year. Meanwhile in Oklahoma, Rachel Carrizales and Joslyn Dalton provided NU with some early excitement with personal-best finishes in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase. Carrizales placed fourth while falling just short of the NCAA regional standard with her career-low time of 10:51.71, while Dalton followed in sixth place (11:06.31). The two times rank as the third- and fourth-fastest, respectively, on the Huskers’ all-time event chart. Elsewhere, Nebraska’s five entries at the Audrey Walton Combined Events completed their first multi-event competitions of the outdoor season during day two in Columbia, Mo. Conditions were less than ideal for the second straight day. Lee Martin put together a strong final day to reach the national provisional qualification for this year’s NCAA Outdoor Championships while placing third overall with 7,010 points in the men’s decathlon. For the Husker women, junior Kim Shubert finished day two of the women’s heptathlon in the same position she started with a second-place total of 4,769 points. ------Norman, Okla. (April 13) --- Nebraska completed a strong week of action at the John Jacobs Invitational in Norman, Okla., combining for eight event titles. Included among the finishers was an impressive 1-2-3 sweep of the men's 200-meter dash by Nate Proabasco (21.20), Scott Wims (21.27) and Lukas Hulett (21.43). Hulett continued his impressive weekend by winning the 400 meters in a regional-qualifying time of 46.65, the only competitor in the field to break 47.00 on the day. Andrew Pearson added a new regional-qualifying performance for the Huskers in the men's 400-meter hurdles with a personal-best clocking of 51.99. In the field, three Husker men's jumpers collected gold: Arturs Abolins in the long jump (24-10w), Daniel Roper in the triple jump (51-8 1/4) and Dusty Jonas in the high jump (6-10 ¾). Both Roper's and Abolins' marks were season bests. The Husker women were led by Sheryl Morgan, who set a season best of 59.43 while winning the 400-meter hurdles. Nebraska also received gold medal performances from Epley Bullock in the high jump (5-8 ¾) and Dace Ruskule in the discus (172-6).
