  • Impressive Results Await BN in Sarawak State Elections
ISSUE: 2016 NO. 20 ISSN 2335-6677 RESEARCHERS AT ISEAS – YUSOF ISHAK INSTITUTE SHARE THEIR UNDERSTANDING OF CURRENT EVENTS Singapore | 3 May 2016 Impressive Results Await BN in Sarawak State Elections By Lee Hock Guan* EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Sarawak state elections will be won by the Barisan Nasional. The question is really, by how much. Taib Mahmud’s successor as chief minister, Adenan Satem, has through various measures taken over the last two years, increased his personal popularity and the popularity of his party tremendously. While there have been disagreements within both the coalitions – Barisan Nasional (BN) and Pakatan Harapan (PH) – those within PH are most serious, and damage the credibility of its component parties even at the federal level. This may affect voter support in the general elections to be held within two years. As the situation now stands, the opposition parties have lost the initiative that they had in 2011, and are basically carrying out damage control measures. Retaining the same number of seats they won in 2011 will be their most realistic strategy. * Lee Hock Guan is ISEAS Senior Fellow and co-coordinator of the Institute’s Malaysia Studies Programme 1 ISSUE: 2016 NO. 20 ISSN 2335-6677 ETHNIC POLITICS WITHOUT UMNO Much of what lies behind Sarawak’s political conditioning is in the fact that the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), Malaysia’s federally dominant party, has never established itself in this East Malaysian state where Malay voters constitute a minority. Instead, UMNO, through the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition model in which it is the decisive voice, has strategically formed political pacts with parties representing Sarawak’s Muslim bumiputras, Christian bumiputra minorities and Chinese.

  • Malaria in Sarawak and Brunei* Julian De Zulueta, M.D., D.T.M
Bull. Org. mond. Sante l 15, Bull. Wid Hith Org. 1956, 651-671 MALARIA IN SARAWAK AND BRUNEI* JULIAN DE ZULUETA, M.D., D.T.M. & H. Medical Officer, World Health Organization Sarawak Malaria Pilot Project, Marudi (Baram), Sarawak SYNOPSIS A general malaria survey of Sarawak and Brunei, two of the territories of British Borneo, is described. Contrary to what was expected in view of the climate and the general conditions, the prevalence of malaria in Sarawak and Brunei proved, on the average, to be low. The coastal areas were found to be practically free from the disease, although epidemics have occurred there in recent years. Malaria was found to be endemic in the hilly and mountainous interior. In fact, topography proved to be an important factor in malaria prevalence, the spleen- and parasite-rates, generally speak- ing, being higher the more abrupt the country. Differences were also observed in the prevalence among the various racial groups, but these were considered to be due to different habits and customs rather than to race itself. Entomological studies showed that Anopheles leucosphyrus Donitz was the main malaria vector in the interior of Sarawak, A. barbirostris playing a secondary role. A. leucosphyrus balabacensis had already been reccgnized as the malaria vector in Brunei. The favourable results of a first field trial of residual insecticides are mentioned and plans for a nation-wide malaria-control pro- gramme are briefly outlined. The present paper summarizes the results of a general malaria survey of Sarawak and the neighbouring State of Brunei, two British territories on the north-west coast of the Island of Borneo.

  • Conservation Ecology of Bornean Orangutans in the Greater Batang Ai- Lanjak-Entimau Landscape, Sarawak, Malaysia
Conservation Ecology of Bornean Orangutans in the Greater Batang Ai- Lanjak-Entimau Landscape, Sarawak, Malaysia Joshua Juan Anak George Pandong Student ID: a1683422 ORCID ID: 0000-0001-7856-7777 A thesis submitted to attain the degree of MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY (SCIENCES) Department of Ecology and Environmental Science School of Biological Sciences Faculty of Sciences THE UNIVERSITY OF ADELAIDE SOUTH AUSTRALIA February 2019 in memory of Tok Nan Conservation ecology of Bornean orangutans in Sarawak Abstract The Bornean Orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus) is one of the three great ape species in Asia. P. pygmaeus is further divided into three subspecies based on their genetic divergence. These subspecies are also geographically apart from each other; with the Malaysian state of Sarawak having the least number of wild orangutans. In 2016, the threat level for the species was upgraded to ‘Critically Endangered’ under the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. The alarming upgrade was due to increased threats to the survival of the species in Borneo, mainly due to habitat degradation and forest loss as well as hunting. The actual orangutan numbers in the wild were still unclear despite the upgrade due to wide variance generated from various statistical methods or survey protocols used to estimate them. In Sarawak, the conservation efforts have been ongoing with the focus on preventing further population decline, habitat degradation and forest loss. The first step in this effort was to acquire baseline data on population estimates and distribution at the core habitats of Batang Ai-Lanjak-Entimau (BALE) where most of the viable orangutan populations are found in the State.
