Historical/Environmental Consultants N89 W16785 Appleton Avenue Menomonee Falls, WI 53051 August 2004 Historical Resource Survey: Cass County Page i EXECUTIVE SUMMARY The Nebraska State Historical Society (NSHS) contracted with Heritage Research, Ltd., to conduct a Nebraska Historic Buildings Survey (NeHBS) of Cass County. The survey was conducted in the fall of 2003 and winter of 2004 to document properties that possess historic or architectural significance. Cass County was previously surveyed in 1977, when 654 properties were identified and recorded in the NeHBS. These properties were reevaluated as part of this project. In addition, 242 properties were newly identified and documented. Surveyed properties were evaluated for their potential to be eligible for the National Register of Historic Places (National Register). Fifty individual properties in Cass County are recommended as potentially eligible for the National Register. Within the report, when a surveyed building is mentioned, its NeHBS site number follows its reference in the text (CC01-001, for example). These site numbers begin with an abbreviation of the county, CC for Cass County, and a two-digit number referring to its location within the county. Each community has a number, for example Alvo is “01” and rural sites are numbered “00.” The last three numbers refer to the specific building or structure within the NeHBS inventory. This re-evaluation process is in accordance with the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) regulation 23 CFR 771.129 and is subject to review and approval by FHWA. I. PROJECT INFORMATION Project Name: United States Highway US-75/US-34 Murray to Plattsmouth (a sub-project of the “1979 Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for US 73-75, N-2 Omaha to Nebraska City; Otoe, Cass, Sarpy and Douglas Counties, Nebraska”). The highway at the time of the 1979 EIS was labeled US 73-75, N-2. However, since then, the segment from Murray to Plattsmouth is now labeled US-75/US-34. Nebraska Highway 2 (N-2) joins US-75 south of Murray and is not part of this segment. Project Location: The project begins 0.12 miles south of the US-75/US-34 and Nebraska Highway 1 (N-1) intersection, at US-34 mile marker (MM) 373.33, and extends north to US-34 MM 380.16, roughly 400 feet south of the junction of US-75/US-34 and Oak Hill Road/Ave B, Plattsmouth, Nebraska (Figure 1).     June 2, 2004 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Work Begins June 14 on Highway 8, West of Endicott Construction work on Nebraska Highway 8, west of Endicott, is scheduled to begin on June 14, weather permitting, according to the Nebraska Department of Roads. Work will include grading, culvert extensions, bridge remodeling, and asphalt overlay. Traffic will be maintained on Highway 8 with the use of signs, flaggers, and pilot cars in the construction work zones. Traffic lights will be in use at the bridge remodel site.
