DOMINATING TRADITION: KA GAKKAI AND THE CREATION OF HISTORY Master of Arts, 1998 Graduate Department of East Asian Studies University of Toronto Abstract of Thesis Since the foundation of the Sôka Gakkai, its history and tradition have been rewritten by its second and third presidents, Toda Josei and Ikeda Daisaku. This historical revision has aiso included the rewriting of the history of Nichiren Shoshii, the Buddhist group fiom which the Saka Gakkai originated. In doing so, they have defined a world-view for millions of S6ka Gakkai adherents. This study addresses the reesons why these leaders defined and redefined their tradition, and the effect constant redefinition of key concepts and beliefs within the S6ka Gakkai has had on the organization and its membership. This will iliustrate the Soka Oakkai tradition as one of justification of new reiigious activity as sanctioned by tradition, and rationalization of the personal power of the postwar presidents in relation to the ümage fiom which it claims to be derived. That rewriting and rationalizing has generally been undertaken by the presidents of S5ka Gakkai who succeeded the founder Makiguchi TsunesaburÔ@ Pfi Ba6 ,namely Toda Josei P E3 kéi 92 ,and Ikeda Daisaku j'& H Jr . Both of these leaders have rewritten history, not ody that of the Sbka Gakkai, but of Nichken ShdshB E3 SiEs ,the Buddhist group âom which Sbka Gakkai originates, as well as the entirety of Buddhism. In doing so, they have succeeded in defining a world-view for millions of SÔka Gakkai adherents. This study addresses several issues in relation to this point. First, the reasons why the S5ka Gakkai leaders found it necessary to define and redefine their tradition, vis-&vis their predecesson within the movement itself, as well as in reiation to the older Buddhist tradition. Second, the matter of the motivations for rewriting history to fit with their perceived reality. Third, the role of the S6ka Gakkai in that exercise, and fourth, the effect this had on membm, as well as the perception of the movement by non-members. This study examines prirnary texhial evidence fiom S5ka Gakkai sources, as well as secondary scholarly sources, that show how the S5ka ûakkai tradition and history has been transformed and manipulated under the presidencies of Toda and Ikeda. The inquiry will begin with an examination of a major aspect of the SÔka Galdrni tradition; that of shaikubuku )fi# , (hg., ''forced conversion"). An examination of the di&nnt ways in which this activity has been defined by SÔka Gakkai authorities will provide insights into the history of the tradition. This has bmi a tradition of justification and rationalkation; justification of new teligious activity as sanctioned by tradition, and rationalization of the personal power of the postwar presidents in relation to the Eneage fiom which it claims to be derivecl. This is a passage from the biography of Toda JoseiP Ha!& ( 1900-1958), the second president of SoX Gakkai fliJ@qs,and the leader responsible for transforming the organization fiom a srnail collective concemed with educational refonn into lapan's largest and fastest growing post-war religious movement. wevCiluti90,written by the current president of Sbka Galdrai, ilceda Daisaku H Afi(1928 - ), is a multi-volume historical novel that describes the growth of the movement fiom the immediate pst-war period up to the death of Toda in 1958. ev-, as well as other works written by Sbka Gakkai presidents, is not simply a work of historical fiction. It serves a speafic function, one that wiiî be the central conceni of this paper. Through writing this book, Ikeda Daisaku has created history. The book estabüshes his immediate predecessors as holders of sacred wisdom, and thediore effectively justifies himself as leader of a spirituai community. Through the course of the book, Ikeda desit clear that he is the exclusive chosen successot to the mlightcncd nile of bis teacher and mentor, Toda Josei. Simply put, Ikeda created a history that serveci bis ndsas suprane authority in the Soka M. This is not a surprising phenornenon. Indeed, mitm versions of the past that substantiate claims ofauthority is a phenomenon that can no doubt be identifid in ail religious traditions. Within the context of this study, howevcr, it is a pattern that is easity identifiecl in the writings of the S5ka Gakicai leadership, and before thin the tradition of Nichiren ShÔshÜ, fiom which Sbka Gakkai is derived. This analysis of the creation of Soka Gakkai history will involve examination of textual evidence that illustrates the manner in which the difFerent leaders of Saka Gakkai have defined the movement, and will be focused around several central questions: First, there is the question of the manner in which the three Sbka Gakkai president s create their own tradition. Focusing specifically on the second and third presidents, Toda and Ikeda, this will entail an analysis of how each has written a dEerent version of religious history. This was accomplished through the creation of new texts, the rewriting and editing of previously written work, and the quieting of past works that do not conform to new versions of the tradition. This Mvednot only constant revision of traditions and practices that define S6ka Gakkai, but also rewriting the lineage and history ofNichken ShWÜ B SES,and with it the entirety of Buddhism. Another question with regard to the way in which history was rewritten is the rnanner in which S6ka Ga& has been presented differently during the presidencies of Makiguchi Tsunesaburo lS[ Li %3d[( ( 1871- WM, the revered founder), Toda and Ikeda. SGka Gakkai has been a very different organization under each of these figures. There will be a detailed examination of the ways in which Slka Gakkai was uniquely altered by each leader. This inquiry will begin with an examination of a single word, shhbuikrc KfR(Eng. "forced conversion"), which has been of great concem to SGka Gakkai shce its reformation after the second World War.

Stone This article places Nichiren within the context of three larger scholarly issues: definitions of the new Buddhist movements of the Kamakura period; the reception of the Tendai discourse of original enlightenment (hongaku) among the new Buddhist movements; and new attempts, emerging in the medieval period, to locate “Japan ” in the cosmos and in history. It shows how Nicmren has been represented as either politically conservative or rad­ ical, marginal to the new Buddhism or its paradigmatic figv/re, depending' upon which model of “Kamakura new Buddhism” is employed. It also shows how the question of Nichiren,s appropriation of original enlighten­ ment thought has been influenced by models of Kamakura Buddnism emphasizing the polarity between “old” and “new,institutions and sug­ gests a different approach. Lastly, it surveys some aspects of Nichiren ys thinking- about “Japan ” for the light they shed on larger, emergent medieval discourses of Japan relioiocosmic significance, an issue that cuts across the “old Buddhism,,/ “new Buddhism ” divide. Soka Gakkai, the largest lay Buddhist movement in Japan, began in 1937 as a lay organization of Nichiren Shoshu, one of several denominations tracing its origins to the Japanese Buddhist teacher Nichiren (1222-1282). Soka Gakkai has been much studied in the context of the Japanese New Religions, 352 Japanese Journal of Religious Studies 20/4 and the acrimonious schism that divided it from Nichiren Shoshu in 1991 has drawn even more attention to the organization. Less well known, howev­ er, is Soka Gakkai International (SGI), branches of which operate in 115 countries outside Japan. The two volumes under review represent the first book-length participant-observer studies of the Soka Gakkai movement in the United States, originally known as NSA and recently renamed SGI-USA.1 Using contrasting methodologies and focusing on different periods in NSA’s history, these sympathetic yet balanced accounts offer insights into how a Japanese Buddhist lay organization has fared in an American context. David Snow’s study covers NSA from 1960 through 1975. His fieldwork was conducted in Los Angeles from January 1974 through July 1975,during NSA’s most vigorous period of expansion.

    Japanese Journal of Religious Studies 1994 21/2-3 Rebuking the Enemies of the Lotus Nichirenist Exclusivism in Historical Perspective Jacqueline Stone The Buddhist teacher Nichiren (1222-1282) has tended to be marginal­ ized by many scholars of Buddhism as “intolerant” for his exclusivistic claim that only the Lotus Sutra leads to salvation in the Final Dharma age (mappo). While the Nichiren Buddhist tradition has often been aggressive in asserting its exclusive truth claim and in opposing other forms of Buddhism, the label of “intolerance” does little to illuminate how this exclusivistic stance has functioned within the history of the tradition both as a unifying force and a strategy of legitimation. This brief historical overview first outlines the origins of “Lotus exclusivism ” in Nichiren’s thought. It then goes on to discusses how this claim to represent the only true Buddha Dharma enabled early Nichiren communities to define and perpetuate themselves vis-a-vis more powerful institutions, and it shows how it has been repeatedly refigured from medieval times to the present in response to changing circumstances. The article also explores the issue of ongoing' conflict within Nichiren Buddhism over whether, and to what extent, confrontation with other Buddhist traditions should be pursued. The Buddhist teacher Nichiren 日 蓮 (1222-1282) and the tradition he founded have lone been marginalized in both Japanese and Western scholarship. Although this may stem in part from lineerine' wartime associations of certain strands of Nichirenist rhetoric with right-wing militarism, on a deeper level it reflects a fundamental dis­ comfort with the Nicniren tradition’s often strident opposition to other religious forms.

    Lecture in Praise of Nichiren Daishonin March 2018, Oko Lecture The Practice of Shakubuku and the Behavior of People This is the “Year of Action.” “Action” means to do things; it refers to people’s behavior. The behavior of an individual clearly reveals one’s mentality and personality. For example, what happens when a short-tempered and selfish person drives a car? Something minor will irritate him, and in an outburst of anger, he may take it out on the car in front of him. Such a person may drag others into accidents and may even take precious lives. The selfish behavior of one individual can transform a car—a convenient machine—into a deadly weapon. By contrast, when a driver is even slightly kind and considerate, this person will prioritize safety, first and foremost, and his or her actions will be gentle on the car as well. The other drivers to whom he or she yields the right of way will probably feel a sense of warm appreciation. The slightest difference in our behavior can cause ourselves and others to feel either happiness or sadness, or appreciation or hatred. When we go to the Head Temple, we often see people stopping and joining their hands in prayer when they walk by the Mieidō, the Kyakuden, and the Mutsubo. This behavior is the manifestation of the faith that those people have in the Gohonzon. When individuals uphold true faith, they will find that their actions in their daily lives will become considerate and compassionate. However, when people uphold erroneous beliefs, their conduct tends to become selfish and self-serving, caring only about themselves.

Emcees must have the determination to bear full responsibility for the meeting and use their voices to transform the atmosphere into a place of joy in seeking the Law, a true Buddhist assembly ( vol. 25, p. 187). Get a good night’s sleep and eat a proper meal. An emcee needs to enunciate, so that everyone can hear and understand what is said. Facial expressions are also important. An emcee mustn’t look tired or unwell. When you’re going to take on the crucial role of emcee, you need to get a good night’s sleep the day before” (NHR-25, 189–90). Pay special attention to timing during the meeting and be able to respond quickly. There are times when you need to jump right in and speak to keep the tempo upbeat, and times when you need to take a breath and pause. If you lack that crucial sense of timing, you can possibly ruin the meeting’s mood” (NHR-25, 191). Chant Nam-myoho-renge-kyo prior to the meeting.
