The six individuals who have accepted the nomination of Board would like to sincerely thank Donna Lynch for the the Nominating Committee to run for the AWC Board time she spent serving the club in this capacity . of Directors Class of 2015 . APCP LI ATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP For as far back as I can remember, the AKC published a ‚‚ Scott Mazer, 2286 El Contento Dr ,. Los Angeles, monthly publication titled AKC Awards, which listed new CA 90068, 323-828-7571, scott m. azer@gmail c. om, titlists and results from all AKC events . The problem was Endorsers: Bo Bengtson, Susanne Hughes, DVM to find the Whippet specialties among the hundreds of other conformation events each month: specialties were ‚‚ Kimberly White, 11775 Griffith Dr ,. Grass Valley, CA, listed with all-breed shows, and the index was alphabetical 95949, 530-274-8681, Endorsers: Mary Jean Odron by club name, not breed, so the American Whippet Club and Guin Borstel was listed under A, the Greater San Diego Whippet Comments regarding applicants may be mailed to AWC Association under G, the Metropolitan Atlanta Whippet Membership Chair Jackie Hubble, 5472 Spoked Wheel Dr., Association under M, etc . If you knew which club to look Colorado Springs, CO, 80923, or emailed to sagehound@ for it was not difficult to find it, but as new specialties comcast.net and should be sent no later than 30 days after were added it was easy to miss one . the applicant has been published in the WN. Also, a specialty that was held as part of an all-breed or group show would be listed under a different heading . It’s A WC SHOW CALENDAR no wonder many breeds don’t maintain records of their AWC 2012 National Specialty, 4/14/12 thru 4/22/12 at specialty shows . (And the numbers vary a lot from breed the Sawmill Creek Resort in Huron, Ohio . Breed Judge Dr . to breed: some have over 100 specialties each year, others Connie Brunkow, www .awc2012 c. om . only one or two ).

AWC Western Regional Specialty July 27th, 2012 in In 2007 the AKC discontinued publication of AKC Awards Lompoc, California . Breed judge Mrs . Patricia Trotter, and switched to a monthly CD, which contained exactly Sweeps Judge Ms . Roberta Russ . the same information . That was an improvement, because it’s possible to click “Search” for “Whippet” and get a AWC Midwest Regional Specialty (tentative dates in complete list of everything related to our breed on that CD: 2012 ). Thursday: Sweeps Judge Mary Alderman, Breed titles, specialty shows, etc . Judge Kathy Davenport; Friday: Breed Judge Lawrence (Skip) Stanbridge; Saturday: Sweeps Judge Patience In early November this year subscribers to the Awards CD Renzulli, Breed Judge Iva Kimmelman; Sunday: Breed received a letter from AKC telling us they are now also Judge Bonnie P . Threlfall . discontinuing the CD . The December CD will apparently be the last . I’m pretty sure it will be possible to find records of all Whippet specialties on the AKC website in the future, WHIPPET SPECIALTIES and once I’ve figured that out I’ll continue to forward the You wouldn’t think it would be difficult to keep track of results to Whippet News . (It appears the website, in fact, Whippet specialty awards . Official specialty status has to be posts the results faster than we get them on the CD, so approved by the AKC, so there are obviously records on file . this change may actually be an improvement ). Most of us have an idea of where and when the specialties Meanwhile, no Whippet specialties were recorded on the are held, at least in our own area, and we all know there’s an November AKC Awards CD . AWC national specialty in April each year, as well as several AWC regionals — although I would guess many AWC BO BENGTSON members aren’t sure of exactly where and when . And there are now lots of independent club specialties as well . P .S . Those who want to keep track of new Whippet titlists, which are not listed on the AKC website, will be able to The fact is that finding all the specialty records is pretty purchase records from AKC each month . Since the parent complicated . Dates and locations keep changing, and as clubs will receive this information free of charge from the new clubs are formed it gets more and more difficult to AKC, perhaps the AWC will print details of new champions, know which specialty is held where . (Last year there were grand champions, obedience titlists, lure coursing titlists, etc ?. 17 Whippet specialty shows in the US ). Not that specialty records are necessarily an infallible gauge of a ’s quality, but I think most serious Whippet people respect specialty wins more than others .

6e | Th Whippet News  November 2011 2012 National Specialty information You’re invited to a Walk Down Memory Lane...

Twenty-six years ago on April 18, 1987, the very first American Whippet Club National Show was held in Columbus, Ohio.

The year 2012 is the 25th anniversary of that first specialty. We thought it appropriate to bring it back to Ohio. With regular classes beginning on Wednesday, April 18, we’ll be hosting a variety of events and celebrations scheduled throughout the week starting on April 14th.

Our theme is “A Walk Down Memory Lane.”

There will be a special catalog section dedicated to our theme. We have offered reduced advertising to anyone who advertised in the original 1987 catalog. There is also a free offering of 200 words per member to those want to tell us about their best or worst national memory; special wins, embarrassing moment, anything goes.

The venue this year is Sawmill Creek Resort. This gorgeous place is a 276-acre resort on the shore of Lake Erie. The ballroom has over 13,000 sq feet of usable space, with separate facilities for the banquet. Grooming and staging will be adjacent to the ballroom for those with multiple . Health testing will be on the same floor, right around the corner from the ballroom.

The Black Bear Saloon and The Salmon Run Restaurant are in the hotel, along with a sandwich/gift shop. There is a pub and gift shops on the grounds.

The Sawmill Creek Resort is located on RT 6 about half way between Cleveland and Toledo. It’s 50 miles from Cleveland Hopkins Int’l Airport and easily accessable from the Ohio Turnpike (I-80/I-90).

We look forward to seeing you there.

Non-Official Events

Once again this year we are offering an AKC Lure Coursing Trial. It will be held on Saturday April 14, 2012. Since the ASFA trial on Sunday April 15, 2012 is the “official” trial for the Triathlon competition, the AKC trial is a NON OFFICIAL trial. Yes, it is an official AKC trial, just not part of the official AWC national.

LARK (Lorain Area Racing Klub) will be offering two WRA race meets. These will be held on Saturday April 21, 2012 and Sunday April 22, 2012. These meets are in CONJUNCTION WITH, BUT NOT AN OFFICIAL PART OF THE AWC NATIONAL.

We would like to offer the following trophies, but need to have sponsors, outside the AWC Trophy sponsorships.

‚ AKC Lure Coursing BOB ‚ WRA Race Meet Winner x 2 ‚ AKC Lure Coursing overall Stake Winner(s): ‚ WRA 2 – 5th x 2 Open, Specials, Veterans ‚ WRA BOS x 2 ‚ AKC Lure Coursing individual Stake Winners: ‚ WRA High Scoring Bench Champion x 2 Each Open, Special, Veteran, Breeder, Bench Champion and Kennel Stake ‚ WRA High Scoring FTE x 2 ‚ WRA Valient Effort x 2

Won’t you please help? You can sponsor any of the above trophies for $30.00.

For more information, please contact Judy Lowther at [email protected] or 216-402-9022.

Or for these trophies only, you can submit your sponsorhip by PayPal to: [email protected].

Goodbye, California (for now) …

After successfully showing Viggo to #1 Whippet male in 2010*, in limited showing, and BOS at the 2011 AWC National at just 2 years old, Paul Lepiane is returning to his normal schedule (a year later than planned).

At his last West Coast weekend before going East, Viggo won Group 2nd under judge Anne Savory Bolus at Burbank KC, handled on this occasion by Amanda Clevenger.

Hello, East Coast!

Viggo, who just turned 3, and Phoebe Booth are pictured a couple of weeks later, taking Group placements at Albany KC under judge P. Levi Marsman and at Troy KC under judge Steven Gladstone.

CONGRATULATIONS to Viggo’s first puppies (x SBIS Ch. Brushwood Timeless Epic): Nysa Hill Timeless Tempo of Bohem (specialty weekend major RWD at 7 months), Nysa Hill Timeless Velocity at Speedy G (back-to-back WD for his first points at 6 months), and Nysa Hill Timeless Karl Lagerfeld (Best Puppy in Show in Italy at 6 months).

Viggo’s second litter is expected at Bohem in late November out of Group winning GCh. Charlamar Sashays In White Linen (a daughter of Ch. Bohem Just In Time, CR).

As Izzy retires to motherhood, we look back at her show career with mixed feelings.

Since winning a 6-9 mo. Puppy class of 40 at the 2009 AWC national and finishing as a yearling at the NCWFA weekend, Izzy has received a total of TWENTY Select/Awards of Merit at 10 specialty weekends. As far as we know that’s a record for a Whippet her age. We feel she’s one of the best Whippets we have shown in 50 years, and judges (as well as a very supportive group of ringside spectators) have universally praised Izzy’s conformation and movement, often with the reservation that “It’s just too bad about her color…”

The AKC standard states that color is “immaterial,” yet requires eyes to be “dark brown to nearly black” and nose “so dark as to appear nearly black.” Since it is, according to genetic experts, impossible to get this kind of pigmentation with Izzy’s coat color, we urge the AWC to change the to achieve consistency. Izzy will have been retired at that point, but it would spare others a frustrating (but, for us, still frequently interesting) experience.

At the rather few all-breed shows Izzy has attended, she has won a number of BOBs, Group 1st and Group placements. The specialty shows are what’s most important to us, however.

Izzy is visibly in whelp to her childhood buddy, Viggo — a breeding planned since they were both puppies. Although Bohem may be best known for & white particololors, we welcome ALL colors! Many 5 weeks along! are interested in this litter, but we would like to find a West Coast show home for a top quality puppy.

Joint Whippet Club Show – Judge’s Critique By Judge Espen Engh

O ctoBER 15th, 2011 – Males to be one exception: when it comes to side movement, it seems to I was delighted to be invited to judge at the inaugural Joint Whippet me that just average will do to most . I beg to disagree; to me the Club show . Many thanks to the committee of the organizing club, crowning glory of a Whippet is the outstanding side movement; free, The Whippet Club, and to the exhibitors for providing such an easy, effortless, unstrained, but still energetic, supple, long and low excellent entry of 356 for my co-judge Molly McConkey and myself . to the ground, the dog being totally balanced and in sync, being able This being my fourth Whippet club championship show in the to make turns without the slightest hesitation or effort, reflecting UK, I will take the opportunity to put some general opinions and the extreme turning ability Whippets have to have in order to fulfill impressions forward . their original purpose . So why on earth settle for just “nice enough” in side movement while insisting on perfection in everything else? The Whippet breed consistently produces many more excellent There were plenty of “nice enough” movers, but few that truly bitches than males . This has been the case for decades and all over impressed in side movement on this day, the CC and resCC-winners the world . Combining basically feminine traits such as elegance and being particularly outstanding in this respect and they were duly refinement and that essential exquisite curvy shape on one hand rewarded . with being masculine on the other hand is indeed hard to accomplish . The males do not have a lot of leeway; if on the fine side, we will CC: Ch. & It. Ch. Whiprose Irish Coffee at Sobers, CC object that they are not quite masculine and sturdy enough, and if Most handsome, instantly attractive brindle dog, combining they are on the strong side, we will complain that they do not have substance and elegance to perfection and knocking out his enough of the required elegance and streamlined quality . competition in side movement . Well balanced, quality head, excellent I must honestly say that in my more than 25 years of judging the expression . Elegant, well crested neck . Standing he may give the breed, I have never judged a more variable entry of Whippets than impression that his layback of upper arm is not his virtue, but he this . In my opinion, the winners were outstanding, and in the long overcomes any potential challenge there in movement, so then run that is what truly counts as I hope and presume that the best how can you punish him for this? Excellent topline and underline, dogs will make their stamp on the future of the breed . The best dogs all smooth, curvy and covering an ideal amount of ground . Truly were as good as ever, combining substance with elegance and with outstanding in side movement with all the important elements: ground-covering, smooth, flowing lines . ideal balance, energy, suppleness, low to the ground, wonderfully synchronized, going forward with ideal extention both ends and not But on the other hand I was worried about the number of dogs costing him a penny – he looked like he could go on all day . Also shown that I would classify as downright poor Whippets . With large dead parallel as seen from the front; I was most impressed . classes like I had today and writing critiques on the two best only, this will not be reflected in the individual critiques and therefore has ResCC: Veredon VIP JW to be addressed separately . Very classical fawn dog, elegant and streamlined and oh, so Frankly what a significant number of dogs were lacking was pure and smooth . He was a headache to judge as I have hardly ever seen simply type and quality . Please allow me to elaborate on the subject: such a variable dog; when he moves, he takes your breath away, and when he stops and is left alone, he is most impressive with I frequently meet up with Whippet judges with personal background wonderful, smooth flowing curves and balance . But then give him rather remote from the breed that keep reiterating as basically their a few seconds and some interference from his handler, and he will only opinion about the breed that “Whippets are becoming too tuck himself up and look half as long and not nearly as attractive . big” and I make it a point to argue that size itself is definitely not I firmly believe in judging positively and focus on the dogs’ good the end all and as long as type, proportions, shape and the optimal moments . Classical Whippet head, giving me associations to the combination of substance with elegance is retained, size itself old days . Enough neck, very pleasing return of upper arm . Well should not be the focal point . Today, however, I am afraid that I had angulated behind . I would prefer a somewhat longer breast bone, to give them right; I was faced with quite a few males that were his underline bordering on exaggerated . He is remarkably light on simply unacceptably huge and whose elegance and thus breed his feet, effortless, elegant and stylish and shows such exceptional type was long gone . Not only was the size itself unacceptable in suppleness and coordination on the move that any real or perceived quite a few, but with the added size was an alarming amount of imperfection must be forgiven . excessive substance, massively round bone, coarse, round and bulky musculature, enormous heads befitting a fighting dog rather than a courser, untypical expressions, totally incorrect woolly coats, thick skin and big, thick ears resulting in a lack of the thoroughbred quality that is the name of the game in any sighthound .

Among the quality dogs in the entry, I was happily able to find just about any virtue that you can possibly hope for in a Whippet and to a large degree . But one thing puzzles me; the many clever and knowledgeable breeders and judges of Whippets are striving to achieve and reward perfection in every single trait, not being satisfied with anything but perfection in type, proportions, outline, construction and soundness coming and going . But there seems
