History of the College: Vijaygarh Jyotish Ray College is a Government Aided college of West Bengal under the affiliation of the . The college was established in 1950 as part of a larger historical reality known as the Bengal Partition. The college was founded with the tremendous effort of the suffered, uprooted and struggling people of the erstwhile East Pakistan. To understand the underlying philosophy of this college, the historical background and its location may be briefly outlined. Located in the Jadavpur area, VijaygarhJyotish Ray College is bordered by Saktigarh, Pallisree, Sree Colony, Golf Green and Vikramgarh and covering an area of approximately two square miles. Population within this colony is approximately 25,000. The land was originally a property of the United State Army and a private owner, a Zaminder. The first batch of refugees migrated to be settled in this land in 1946 after a lot of heart wrenching struggle and behind-the- scene negotiations with the government by the veteran freedom fighter Santosh Kumar Dutta who had a land deed to occupy the land. In order to impart higher education to the youths of this refugee settlement, in June 1950, the first colony committee planned to build a college in the military barrack where this college is now situated. In 21st August, 1950, the owner of this military barrack, the Eastern Command finally agreed to hand over the land to the colony committee to build the college. The college was finally founded in 2nd November, 1950 with Prof. Prasanta Kumar Bose at the helm of the first Governing Body along with many academic stalwarts including Dr. Triguna Sen, Dhirendra Nath Roy Chowdhury, Nagendra Nath Pal, Sukumar Gupta and Dr. Makhanlal Roychwdhury. Prof. Chinmoy Guha, the legendary academician and researcher in the field of English Literature, nationally and internationally. He became Vice-Chancellor of the Rabindra Bharati University was Professor of our college. The college has also been led by many able Principals and Teacher-in-Charge The present Principal of the college is Dr. Rajyasri Neogy.

Prospectus | 4 From the desk of the President:

Education, besides being the birth-right of every citizen of the country, facilitates the full development of his/her human potential. This involves embracing a philosophy of education which is driven as much by a moral-intellectual as by a social commitment towards the disadvantaged and the ignored sections of society.

With the mission in view, the institute has crossed many a milestone- the recent one being the attainment of the NAAC accreditation- in its long journey, thus continually upgrading itself as and when demanded by the changing times. It requires not only a continuous process of infrastructure development but also a constant attention to the quality of education to be delivered and the campus order and discipline to be maintained. This has been made possible by the institute's entire team of dedicated teachers and staff ably led by the principal. I am of the conviction that the promises shown and direction taken by the institute, in keeping with its basic objectives and motto, will be successfully and consistently carried forward into the future.

With Good Wishes! Sri Debabrata Mazumder, CA Mayor in Council Kolkata Municipal Corporation
