SPECIAL ISSUE of AUSTRALIAN SOCIAL WORK WORKING WITH CHILDREN Australian Social Work is seeking original manuscripts for a special issue dedicated to working with children. Children are an important group of social work service users. This volume will bring together papers that advance knowledge for policy and practice in social work with children. The volume will focus on papers concerning the wellbeing, social participation, and protection of children of all ages. We are interested in papers that: • Analyse policy issues related to recognising the needs and rights of children as distinct from those of their parents, in field such as domestic violence, family relationships, child protection, mental health, and substance abuse. • Focus upon strategies to ensure children have a voice in decisions made by professionals that affect them. • Consider the roles of individuals, communities, and policies in enhancing the wellbeing of children. • Discuss how social work practice with children may be changing. • Consider how social work education is developing and could further develop practitioners’ capacities to work effectively with children. The special issue may include: • Theoretical papers that advance frameworks for children’s participation. • Policy papers that address the implications of conceptualising children as ‘vulnerable’ and ‘at-risk’ in social policy. • Research papers that describe and evaluate strategies that are effective (or ineffective) in engaging with children. • Practice papers that critically reflect upon current policies, practices, issues, and dilemmas in working with children. • Papers on educational preparation of social work and human service professionals to work effectively with children. The deadline for submissions is March 2012. Please contact the Editor or Guest Editors to express your interest in submitting a paper.
