Before securing a property renters pay a refundable fee to their landlords called a security deposit. Security deposits are a fee that landlords use to protect themselves from paying for damages that tenants cause. There are many precautions that students and other first-time renters can take to help preserve their deposit. There are also a lot of misconceptions about what security deposits are used for.
