ISSN 1567-214x Keywords: Behavior, Social Society, Surfing Sports ABSTRACT This paper examined sustainability isssues happening at tourism destinations in Kashmir Valley. Conclusions are drawn and remedies provided on the basis of concerned issues. Practices, models and strategies adopted by Himalayan and Non- Himalayan states are presented and explained their relevance for the rectification and endorsement of sustainable tourism at destinations. In Kashmir Valley most of the products are gifted by nature and demands vital care and supervision. Due to poor management, deficient facilities and services problems like contamination (water and air), solid waste, open dumping of garbage, emissions, chlorofluorocarbons and green house gases, illegal constructions and degradation of forests highly noticeable at renowned places like Srinagar, Pahalgam and Gulmarg. In this context, strong policies, strategic framework, sustainable tourism practices and adequate facilities and services are treated as imperative. 1. Introduction Over the period, progress of tourism industry offered numerous benefits to people living at tourism potential destinations. High tourist influx brought dollars to their accounts and boosted their economies. Nevertheless, lack of consideration and overcrowding negatively exaggerated the tourism resources like water bodies, aquatic resources and critical environment (Neto, 2003). Longstanding existence of destinations need proper supervision and at the same time control of emissions, disposal of wastes, and maintenance of hygiene treated as vital.

Bhat Almost every part of India is known for many a sacred shrine, but the Amarnath Cave embossed in the snowy valley of Kashmir reveals the unique sight of natural Ice Linga of Lord Shiva perched on a glacial gorge which waxes and wanes with the movements of the moon. According to a common belief, it reaches the maximum height on Purnima in the month of Shravan (July-August), when Shiva is supposed to have divulged to Parvati the secret of salvation. On this day thousands of pilgrims negotiating the most difficult ridges arrive at the holy cave for Dharshan of the Lord. The pilgrimage of thousands of devotees to the far way cave of Amarnath, nestled in a glacial gorge of the western Himalayas, through some of the most charming scenery in the world, is fascinating in the extreme. One is stuck with wonder at the quiet and ordinary way in which a canvas town springs up with incredible rapidity of colours and of all shapes and sixes and broad streets running through the middle, and all vanishing as quickly at the break of dawn when the whole army of pilgrimages set out on the march again.

  • Demographics/Geography of Kashmir
Ancient Kashmir was home to a majority Hindu and Buddhist population for thousands of years and renowned as a center for Hindu and Buddhist learning. Muslim invaders from Central Asia took control in the 14th century. Under Muslim rule, Hindus faced periods of persecution, resulting in mass migrations from the region roughly once a century, until the late 1700s. In the early 1800s, Sikh rulers controlled the region, followed by a Hindu dynasty from the mid-1800s through 1947. Demographics/Geography of Kashmir The historic region of Kashmir has a total area of 85,807 sq. miles and is now divided between three countries. Pakistan occupies approximately 30,160 sq. miles, known as Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Gilgit-Baltistan. China controls 16,500 sq. miles of Kashmir (through a boundary settlement with Pakistan and occupation of land during the 1962 Indo-China War), while the remaining territory forms the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir is divided into three parts: Kashmir Valley, Jammu, and Ladakh. The total population is 12,541,302 (Muslims: 66.97%; Hindus: 29.63%; Sikhs: 2.03%; Buddhists/Others: 1.36%). Muslims comprise a majority in the Valley, Hindus are a majority in Jammu, while Buddhists account for 45% of the population in Ladakh. www.hafsite.org PRomotiNG DigNitY, MUTUAL REspEct, AND plURAlism 910 17th St NW, Suite 316A, Washington, DC 20006 1947 Kashmir Becomes Part of the Republic of India In 1947, the Princely State of Jammu and Kashmir became part of the Republic of India. • Geographical Personality of Kashmir Valley
CHAPTER I GEOGRAPHICAL PERSONALITY OF KASHMIR VALLEY “Agar Firdoos Barooy-e-Zameen ast, Hamin astoo Hamin astoo Hamin ast” (If there is paradise on Earth, It is here, It is here, It is here) (Mughal Emperor, Jahangir) 1.1 Introduction Kashmir Valley has rightly been called as the “Paradise on Earth” and “Switzerland of Asia”. Bernier, the first European traveler to enter Kashmir, wrote in 1665 that “In truth, the kingdom surpasses in beauty all that my warmest imagination had anticipated” (Young-husband, 1911)1. Geographically and climatically, Kashmir is the core of mighty Himalayas receiving in abundance its grace in the form of captivating scenic beauty, lush green pastures and lofty glistening snow covered mountain peaks which capture the changing hues of the brilliant sun, in many ways, the enchanting rivers and rivulets and the great lakes of mythological fame. In her valleys grow the rarest of trees and herbs, including the most precious of all flowers - the Zaafran (Saffron). In her forest are found the best pines and deodars. From her orchards come apples, apricots, pears, walnuts and cherries of different kinds. On her green meadows graze the lambs bearing the most exquisite wool. Her Dal lake and her house boats, Gulmarg and her glaciers have made her an international tourist spot. What to talk of her temples, the dream of every devout Hindu - the Holy Amarnath where lakhs of pilgrims trek every year, regardless of inclement weather and a host of other dangers; the Shiva temple, the Khir Bhawani, all with their lofty associations with great masterminds and the impeccable Shaivite philosophy (Sadhu,1984)2.
