International Forum on Energy, Environment Science and Materials (IFEESM 2015) Five Principles of Waste Product Redesign under the Upcycling Concept Jiang XU1 & Ping GU1 1School of Design, Jiangnan University, Wuxi, China KEYWORD: Upcycling; Redesign principle; Green design; Industrial design; Product design ABSTRACT: It explores and constructs the principles of waste product redesign which are based on the concept of upcycling. It clarifies the basic concept of upcycling, briefly describes its current development, deeply discusses its value and significance, combines with the idea of upcycling which behinds regeneration design principle from the concept of “4R” of green design, and takes real-life case as example to analyze the principles of waste product redesign. It puts forward five principles of waste product redesign: value enhancement, make the most use of waste, durable and environmental protection, cost control and populace's aesthetic. INTRODUCTION Recently, environmental problems was becoming worse and worse, while as a developing country, China is facing dual pressures that economical development and environmental protection. However, large numbers of goods become waste every day all over the world, but the traditional recycling ways, such as melting down and restructuring, not only produce much CO2, but also those restruc- tured parts or products cannot mention in the same breath with raw ones. As a result, the western countries started to center their attention to the concept of “upcycling” of green design, which can transfer the old and waste things into more valuable products to vigorously develop the green econ- omy. Nevertheless, this new concept hasn’t been well known and the old notion of traditionally inef- ficient reuse still predominant in China, so it should be beneficial for our social development to con- struct the principles of waste products’ redesign which are based on the concept of upcycling. -

Missouri Policy on Resource Recovery and State Target Materials Statement It is the policy of the State of Missouri to integrate appropriate resource recovery philosophies and practices into all relevant activities in order to minimize the amount of solid waste that requires disposal, reduce environmental and public health threats, increase the manufacture and use of products made from recycled materials and preserve our natural resources. Goals The goals of the policy are as follows: . To incorporate solid waste reduction, recycling and resource recovery into the solid waste management activities of state and local governments, industries and citizens. To apply an integrated waste management hierarchy when managing local and regional solid waste streams to minimize possible environmental impacts associated with any one technology and to achieve the maximum feasible use of waste reduction, recycling and resource recovery. This hierarchy is as follows: o First ‐ reduce the amount of solid waste created o Second ‐ reuse, recycle and compost o Third ‐ recover and use energy from solid waste o Fourth ‐ incinerate or dispose of in a sanitary landfill . System scale The system scales were classified as follows: small scale (design flows3 of17m /day or less), medium scale (8 to 20,000 m3/day), and large scale (3800 m3/day or more). The widespread implementation of non-potable reuse (NPR) projects across all scales highlighted the ease of implementation associated with lower water quality requirements and treatment schemes that resembled conventional wastewater treatment. Although energy re- covery was mostly achieved in large-scale plants from biosolids management or hydraulic head loss, the highest potential for concentrated nutrient recovery occurred in small-scale systems using urine source separating technologies. Small-scale systems offered benefits such as the ability for onsite resource recovery and reusethat lowered distribution and transportation costs and energy consumption, while larger scales benefited from lower per unit costs and energy consumption for treatment. -

They cover characterization, containment, handling, labeling, tracking, and disposal. They apply to workers (as hazardous waste generators and custodians), field construction managers, supervisors, line management, the hazardous waste program manager; and Fleet Services, Facilities and Operations, and Waste Management. 2 Requirements All industrial waste, defined as waste that contains hazardous materials but in concentrations below regulatory thresholds (typically demolition debris and contaminated soil), must be tracked by Waste Management and managed according to the requirements below. 2.1 Waste Characterization Because the concentration of contaminants in industrial waste falls below certain regulatory thresholds, it does not need to be managed the same as hazardous waste. (See Hazardous Waste: Waste Determination and Characterization Guidelines.) Indicators that a waste is industrial include the following: . Waste type. Certain types of waste are known to be classified as industrial waste, such as treated wood; soils contaminated with non-hazardous or low levels of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), metals and petroleum hydrocarbons; non-friable asbestos waste; and concrete slurry. In many cases, these wastes result from construction-related projects under the purview of the Facilities and Operations Division. Industrial Stormwater Fact Sheet Series Sector N: Scrap Recycling and Waste Recycling Facilities U.S. EPA Office of Water EPA-833-F-06-029 February 2021 What is the NPDES stormwater program for industrial activity? Activities, such as material handling and storage, equipment maintenance and cleaning, industrial processing or other operations that occur at industrial facilities are often exposed to stormwater. The runoff from these areas may discharge pollutants directly into nearby waterbodies or indirectly via storm sewer systems, thereby degrading water quality. In 1990, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) developed permitting regulations under the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) to control stormwater discharges associated with eleven categories of industrial activity. As a result, NPDES permitting authorities, which may be either EPA or a state environmental agency, issue stormwater permits to control runoff from these industrial facilities. What types of industrial facilities are required to obtain permit coverage? This fact sheet specifically discusses stormwater discharges various industries including scrap recycling and waste recycling facilities as defined by Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) Major Group Code 50 (5093). Facilities and products in this group fall under the following categories, all of which require coverage under an industrial stormwater permit: ◆ Scrap and waste recycling facilities (non-source separated, non-liquid recyclable materials) engaged in processing, reclaiming, and wholesale distribution of scrap and waste materials such as ferrous and nonferrous metals, paper, plastic, cardboard, glass, and animal hides. ◆ Waste recycling facilities (liquid recyclable materials) engaged in reclaiming and recycling liquid wastes such as used oil, antifreeze, mineral spirits, and industrial solvents. -

Land application of sewage sludge (biosolids), animal manure, and petroleum contaminated soil are regulated separately from other wastes and are not the focus of this document. 1. Is the material a fertilizer or soil conditioner? Is the material managed as a valuable commodity, i.e. does the generator sell the material? MSBA/MASA Model Policy 805 805 WASTE REDUCTION AND RECYCLING I. PURPOSE The purpose of this policy is to establish a resource recovery program to promote the reduction of waste, the separation and recovery of recyclable and reusable commodities, the procurement of recyclable commodities and commodities containing recycled materials, the disposition of waste materials and surplus property, and establishment of a program of education to develop an awareness of environmentally sound waste management. (Minn. Stat. § 115A.15, Subd. 1) II. GENERAL STATEMENT OF POLICY The policy of the school district is to comply with all state laws relating to waste management and to make resource conservation an integral part of the physical operations and curriculum of the school district. III. DEFINITIONS A. “Lamp recycling facility” means a facility operated to remove, recover, and recycle for reuse mercury or other hazardous materials from fluorescent or high intensity discharge lamps. (Minn. Stat. § 116.93, Subd. 1) B. “Mixed municipal solid waste” means garbage, refuse, and other solid waste that is aggregated for collection but does not include auto hulks, street sweepings, ash, construction debris, mining waste, sludges, tree and agricultural wastes, tires, lead acid batteries, motor and vehicle fluids and filters, and other materials collected, processed, and disposed of as separate waste streams. (Minn. Stat. § 115A.03, Subd. 21) C. “Packaging” means a container and any appurtenant material that provide a means of transporting, marketing, protecting, or handling a product and includes pallets and packing such as blocking, bracing, cushioning, weatherproofing, strapping, coatings, closures, inks, dyes, pigments, and labels.
